  1. We learned today that Toyota now manufacture a 4x2 diesel AUTO Vigo.

Exciting news! Can you back-date your post to August 2004 so as not to alarm people who might read it and think it's something new?

My understanding was in LOS auto only on 4x4 diesel and the 2.7 petrol . No auto on Prerunner diesel etc. So whats cooking here.

The 2.7L Petrol extra-cab RWD 4AT was released in 2006 (and upgraded to Smart-cab in 2009), the extra-cab RWD 4AT 3.0L Diesel was available for one year only in 2007, but the 4-door RWD 4AT 3.0L "G" grade has been available every year since it was first introduced in Aug 2004.Maybe you don't take any notice of them because they don't have the 4WD/Pre-runner's jacked up suspension?

Yes we called the dealer who confirmed that the Vigo below is only 2WD (on 15's) and is SOLD, I was too slow off the mark :( , it looks brand and new had only 13,000km and book service.

  2. Some time ago the Beeb did a Documentary about British salesmen and their company cars. It revealed that salesman harbour enormous insecurity and class issues, reflected not only in the make of their company car but also down to what level of trim their car has. One regular looking guy confessed that when he is speeding down the fast lane he won't pull over for someone driving a lesser model, make of that what you will.

These salesmen recognise each other as they normally have a couple of suits and shirts on hangers in the rear compartment, like a flag to others.

They seem to know the trim details, extras and all the little doo dahs that different manufactures and models have signifying where they are in this bizarre hierarchy.

Obviously BMW are superior to Ford, but even within each make and model it is competitive. This philosophy is alive every day on motorways, roads and service stations throughout the UK.

One tragic salesman had his regular Ford replaced with I believe a diesel Metro ( snigger ye not ) his wife and himself were actually inconsolable, he chocking back the tears, and she crying openly. They said there lives had been ruined by the company's decision to buy a budget car, he no longer wanted to take his car home and park it in their drive, as they felt the neighbours would be laughing at them.

I know, it would be funny if it wasn't so sad.

This prog really lifted a curtain into the British psyche, a disturbing one, where people attache too much significance to the car they drive. So maybe all that subliminal stuff that car advertising and the media push, like I'm sexy, successful and this car tells that world that I'm sophisticated and discerning. So if you haven't got the latest, whatever and top of the range, well then your just inadequate and deserve to feel like a loser. Is advertising feeding into our deepest fears about not quite being good enough that makes people buy into all this ? . . . Are we all in some way, on some level, buying into it as well ?

  3. How could he do this, was he changing the figures on the pump before fuelling you up ??

Anywho which PTT in Chonburi was it, I'll gladly fill up for less, I have no need for receipts.

I have no clue how he could do this. Probably had a way to prevent the amount of fuel pumped from being registered or logged.

This was happening in London (possibly all over the Uk, who knows ) certainly in the late 60's . . . .what was actually happening was that tanker fuel delivery drivers, were stealing 1000's of gallons of fuel from the depots, foremen and gate security were also involved as they test amount of fuel leaving for delivery.

Then they sold the fuel to the managers of petrol stations, who had to juggle the amount of knock off fuel in the tanks, with the legit fuel from the company, Shell or whoever. So basically there was no need to fiddle or tamper with the pumps themselves, as there was so much unaccounted for fuel in their tanks. The knock off fuel was normally sold cheaper than the legit stuff.

Mind you this may not be the scenario that is happening here, but is a possibilty.

  4. Your motor will have 16 inch rims, same as mine, 17 on late models. The base model Vigos have 15 inch and narrower track, and of course they are lower to the ground. :)

For fun, look at youtube, BBC top gear Polar trip. They picked the best truck for the job, heavily modified but good fun. :D

Flippin' eck, don't suppose they do a fatter tyre than the standard 16" . . . . .ooeer missus . . . . life's full of compromises . .still you seem perfectly content with your Vigo and it's manners, so maybe I shouldn't sweat the small stuff :)

Just crossed my neurotic mind, was the Moose test Vigo a 4wd, and if it was, would the 2wd fare any different ? . . . the permutations is making me head spin. The Vigo I'm considering is a 2wd version, which is probably thought of as just a little too gay by some hearabouts. It's obviously lighter and would handle differently, and have less traction, I'll warrant. Why didn't I study physics at school instead of reading Dan Dare, then I could answer my own questions.

Can't watch youtube as my speakers are awol, but will as soon as their sorted.:annoyed:

  5. There is a very reliable, cheap and guaranteed fix to ensure your ride does not tip over. All you have to do is NOT drive it like some Michael Schumaker wannabe <deleted> and you will be fine. Easy really!. No need to fit new suspension or tyres.

Remember it is a utility vehicle not a sports car. :D

Agree, plus, have yet to see a moose here in Thailand!

    Mac

in the moose test OP referes to conducted by swedish teknikens varld, the Vigo tested was on 16" wheels. on 15" wheels it would (did later) pass the same test. the 16' wheels provides increased traction preventing truck from sliding, but flips more easily.

most drivers never do a moose test. most drivers arent as skilled as the scandinavians used to driving on ice and snow and avoiding moose coming out from the forests. most drivers would crash and not make a moose manouvre

in comparison i drive my friends 2008 mazda BT50 on occasions, and the traction is terrible. the curves i do 120kmh with 2010 Vigo on 17", can only be done in 80kmh with Mazda on 16" and then with a slide. But the Mazda is less likely to fail a moose test due to the low traction, it will slide but not flip

I would not be concerned about the better traction of Vigo, and I would not be concerned about flipping during a moose manouvre. Its not likely you will drive like that

I m not sure if Navara has ever been moose tested, but I belive it would handle very similar to Vigo if both on 16" similar tyres

The other trucks in LOS dont have as good traction as Vigo and Navara

Wow good news, there is a fix ! . .so one inch determines whether one slides or flips, thank you Kata. Perhaps 15" wheels are the standard size for pre 09 Vigo ?

Seems that as long as I have 15" wheels, within reason , I'm far less likely to flip over. And I think your saying wheel size is a personal chice, and that you would be comfortable with 16's, accepting extra traction as the pay off.

I'm wondering if for some, along with extra traction, cosmetics is the reason for larger wheels, larger is sexier, so the 17's you speak of is like Viagra for Vigo's .

One dark wet night I was driving along a winding country lane in Ireland, I came around a bend to see a horse running straight towards me ( a month prior to this, a driver hit a horse, it's head broke the windscreen and entered the cab, decapitating his wife ) instinctively I swerved to avoid it, I skidded sideways onto the wrong side of the road struggling to get control and to stop the car from flipping over, more by luck than skill I survived. So maybe that was my Moose test.

And when I observe the dynamics of the local traffic here in Samutprakarn, I can only think of scenes from Max Max and think of words like Kamikazi and Death Wish, I'm thinking a Moose test after this, is a walk in the park :D

  6. I have the same ride but 2007. Unless you want to go rallying in your 2008 then you will be very pleased with it. I have never had a dodgy moment, in fact l feel very comfortable in mine but have felt very uncomfortable in other makes l have driven. If l thought it was dangerous l would be honest and tell you. Our kata has had a few so l hope he can give you some input, as well as others. Toyota has added some stability stuff on later models, bigger brakes as well but you will have to spend another 400k for that. You will enjoy the feel of your truck, remembering it is a truck. :)

Thank you Transam, for your comforting and informative reply . Although I must confess, having read many of your threads where you display a large appetite for speed and power, through electronic wizardry and gizmo's. And a vague memory of 'spirited' overtaking by your good self, so in all fairness, it's actually hard to believe that your drag style antics (no reference to your wardrobe ) have not produced many very dodgy moments :whistling:

I in contrast, would be considered very sedate. Many years ago I drove HGV's, Mercs, Fiats and Hino's so I do have some appreciation of mass and velocity, and how scary it can be when things go a little arseways :D

  7. the other day on the way back from Pattaya I had a bow wave up to the top of the bonnet that also came up on the glass of the front windows ~ done that many times in a Land Rover and Rangie but never before in a Toyota but it did handle the water very well it seems and did not float away either

Oh its a 4 wheel drive 4 door Vigo auto

Wow, you sound very matter of fact about it ! . . . . .I can only think that your constantly fording rivers and lakes, you sound like those butch off roaders that the 'Fast Show' did a sketch on. They were called ' The Offroaders " their catch phrase was "It's Gripped, It's Sorted, Lets Off Road ! " I thought they were very funny.

But to be serious, water at that height can be very dangerous, as I'm sure your aware, if it has enough momentum it can easily throw a pick up around, and push it into a raging river.

I'm curious as to whether or not the water actually managed to get past your door seals and into the cab. Either way, fascinating to hear your account of the bow wave, and how you didn't float away, just don't think I'd be so cool about it .:o

  8. I'm thinking of getting a 08 Vigo G, it's an auto with 4 doors, has ABS and I believe two airbags, alledgedly low miles and book service, asking 580, which seems a reasonable price.

However, having seen the video of the Moose test where the Vigo lost control, I can't help feeling that if that were me drivng, and as I'm nowhere as skilled as the Moose tester ( who actually balanced the Vigo on the two nearside wheels and countersteered it back down to earth ) whereas I would doubtless have lost the plot and be on my ear !

So having searched far and wide I've failed to find a solution for adding stability to the Vigo, that is on Vigo's pre Nov 08 ( I'm informed by Kata that Toyota introduced VSC post November 08 )

One TV Vigo owner says he has no handling probs, having fitted fatter tyres, and gas shocks. Which sounds positive, but still, I wonder would it pass the Moose test.

And what about all the other pre VSC Vigo's out there, is there nothing that the owners can do, are they just too tall and narrow to take aggressive swerving ?

Are all they accidents waiting to happen, or am I just another hyporchondriac ? :(

    What's Bad

RHD UK version initially had 102bhp 2.5 D-4D with 260Nm torque (just 200Nm on two wheel drive version). Also only 5-speed manual (no auto).

Toyota warned that independent Thai imports may not have standard ABS, only have drivers airbag on top of the range models, do not have passenger airbags, seatbelts do not have pretensioners, not child locks on rear doors of double cab, no rear centre headrest, softer suspension on double cabs, less anti corrosion protection.

Breather tube for rear axle only vents on axle so water can get in when deep wading.

    What to Watch Out For

Seems to be a serious wet weather problem in Thailand (where most are made and huge numbers sold). Maybe be the breather tube on the rear axle.

Above seen online, Honest John.co.uk, wondered what the fix might be ?

  10. everyone I have ever spoken to, farang and Thai alike, tell me there is a very high liklihood that second hand cars have been crash damaged....... thoughts?

Reply..Yes, Quite a lot....Assuming that you don't know the history, the the main dealer is best, at least they will give you a NO MAJOR ACCIDENT DAMAGE guarantee, and should have its history. As I said my wife scraped my 520d along a taxi....you can't tell...modern paints match very well and are applied to original spec, well they are at BMW main dealers. If the main dealer sold the car, odds on they will have serviced/repaired the car. You could check the cars insurance to confirm it covers main dealer repairs..if not then give it a miss as it could have been repaired anywhere.

check insurance history and No Claim Bonus (which follows car not owner). any claims, check the amount of claim and get an indication of repair

Very, very useful info, as a newbie I wasn't aware that the insurance follows the car, I'm looking to buy used myself so will get 'her indoors' to investigate any claims. Many thanks for marking my card

  11. Strange name.. Why would anyone trust Cart Rust?

    :P

    [/quote

Droll very . . . .laugh, I nearly bought my own beer.

Mind you, anyone who is a Danny Williams and a Wonderwall fan , and is wordyclever enough to incorporate them into his handle, is entitled to see the universe in his or her own special way.

Actually, it did make me laugh, so thanks for that, just refrain from actually singing Moon River, or Yellow River come to that, Ole Man Ribber is cool though, should you feel the need. :whistling:

Plenty of new car deals unless you pay cash for secondhand just check to see if it has been in an accident just deal directly with a dealer not a middle man.

No need for insults MRO knows his stuff and just telling you " why use them " in a different way.

Yes I'm sure there are plenty of new car deals, but someone enquiring about 'Cart Rust' inspections is looking at a used car, and checking for faults requires at least the facility to get underneath with good lighting etc etc, and with so many moving parts in a car, it is too easy to overlook something crucial, thats why a reputable company that can be depended upon to give a professional objective opinion on the condition is so important. Even if a car hasn't been in an accident it may be that some major component is in need of replacement.

I'm not really sure about your interpretation of MRO's post. I thought he was just having a larf, I'm not convinced that it was a subliminal message, to NOT use a mechanical survey when buying a used car, That would not seem very logical.

As to your observation of 'No need for insults' .Yes your quite right for drawing my attention to it, reading it again I can see that I was 'out of order' for ribbing him quite as much as I did, about his choice of moniker. I hold my hand up to it, it's a fair cop. Although at the time it made me laugh, and still does, we do not all share the same sense of humour, and maybe I was insensitive.

As to it's being 'insulting' I sincerely hope not, and would apologise unreservedly if it was felt to be so.

  12. Test Car has a good reputation. Its well worth the money as we all know how many lemons are about. If the seller wont let you go there with a car - walk away. I used to get people asking us to servey cars, I just refer to Test Car now.

Yes indeed, and the lemon tree is a BIG tree, one of my anxieties, maybe unfounded, was that being a Farang, the testers and seller might collude to sell me a lemon. But your post and the previous one, have helped to reduce my paranoia from everyones out to get me, to 'nearly' everyones out to get me

  15. Whatever happened to ' Hall's Pictorial Weekly ' ? . . . . .I really miss hearing those posh Corkonians talking about 'Culture' and how they were soo much more sophisticated than the Jackeens in the 'Other' capital city ;)

Anyway, hozabout a nice jaunting cart

  16. It's always blame the kids...they're not the ones that are causing all the problems..but it's an emotive topic, it sells papers and it gets people's attention. Just more tropes and soundbites from another condescending govt department that does f*@K all but feather its own nest.

True, true and true, but so also is monkey see monkey do . . . .and copy cat crime . . . .and copy cat suicide . . . .we learn language and social skills through copying . . .it's how we evolve, or don't . . . . . .drug use and crime is copycat too.

  17. And you Yanks should get off your high horse. Weren't you the most recent owners of slaves in the western world?

    [/quote

A tad off topic, but, the Europeans have a far shorter history with slave trading than the African and Arab cultures, which both have a far longer history with the lucrative slave trade .

Even today in Africa, there are slave descendants who are still regarded as being in bondage, to their local chief/owner. So actually the US is not the most recent slave owners.

  18. I have bought this from Carrefour. My car wasn't supplied with a spare from new, no room, so I have no choice but to carry this product.

As a commited member of the OCD club, and having a vague memory of you dissing the Oriental products in favour of the European ones, your current drive being an Audi ?

I just have to ask, what manner of modern malarky vehicle do you have that does not possess, not just a spare, but NO room for a spare.

    Nosy f***** :D

  19. thx 4 yr replys guys...

had a look at the navara and the colorado

but the guy said you'd have to 3 month once u put the order in,,so i've sort off croosed dat off my list..

most are offering the first year free insurance....

Im buying thru finance,,,should i expekt a discount off their ticket prices???

so far nissan offered 30k straight away and misu said she can offer discount..

    cheers

If you're after money off, then why not just drop 2 driving wheels out of the equation? Now admittedly I'm not traipsing across rice paddies with my 2WD Toyota, but there hasn't been one occasion I've been close to stuck? On some pretty slippery clay tracks, 30' inclines included. Unless you're expecting to cover some SERIOUS off-roading the extra traction is COMPLETELY unnecessary. 99.9% of the time you'll be in 2WD mode anyway to save astronomical fuel bills anyway...

Combined with a larger turning circle, higher servicing/repair bills, higher taxation bracket on the 4-doors too, it really begs the question; why the hel_l bother? Oh yeah, there are a few tossers (present company excepted, of course!) who like to feel superior sitting higher than the rest, other than the other tossers in fourby's?! Higher C of G also means abysmal handling, wallowing around the bends & wearing your sidewalls to boot.

4doors tells me you'll never be shifting a serious payload, ergo, never that likely to need the off-road capabilities either? If you MUST play 'King of the Castle', why not save a fortune and have your 2WD jacked up instead? BigFoot if you like? :whistling: Ooh! And one of those hi-level 'Snorkel' intake/exhaust systems? Sorry, can't help myself sometimes...

4WD? 200,000Km (mostly)on but a fair amount off-road tells me one inescapable fact; Surplus to requirements IMHO.

I'll attempt to assist now rather than just ribbing you? I'd go for the 2WD 3L Vigo and 'Rear Access System' crew cab? You know, suicide doors for back-seat passengers? The bed's similar to the 2door, and leg-room inside the cab almost identical to the 4door version? The bed on the 4door versions are minuscule, I almost guarantee you'll curse that particular choice 2-3times/year. Far more often than you'll regret the 2/4door option anyway; who cares? You're in the front!!

In October 2007, the Swedish auto magazine Teknikens Värld performed an evasive manoeuvre (a moose test) that revealed that the manoeuvrability of Hilux pickup truck was deficient for turning sharply at moderate speeds. The truck failed the test and only the driver's skill prevented it from overturning. After the test Toyota stopped the sales of Hilux equipped with 16 inch wheels in Europe.

So what does one do to prevent the above, fit larger wheels ? . . . . .either way a little disturbing, mind you the little mini Merc suffered the same faults, can't remember how that was rectified.

  20. I should bleedin' co co . . . his audacity is staggering, I'm nearly speechless  . . .unless of course you've signed a 'Full repairing lease' for the place ? . .which is highly unlikely. If you signed a lease agreement you should get someone to translate it for you.

As it's his property ,why should you invest in it, apart from paying rent, when you leave are you expected to take your part of the pump with you? . .it defys all logic that I know of. So it seems he's really trying it on, if you were foolish enough to pay, you would have set a precedent for contributing to ALL future repairs to his property which is insane. My wife who is Thai says he is just trying it on as you are a farang, and that no Thai would pay.

Equally it is not easy for landlords to find tenants, so perhaps you should be firm with him and tell him that if he INSISTS on you paying that you will leave. That should put him back in his box. This kind of financial bullying and opportunism makes me want to reach for my magnum

  21. In the UK l had a 760 V6. One of the best cars l owned but as you say if you get an electrical problem it is a nightmare. I had one and found everything worked on resistances, in the end l had to bypass the problem and rewire, but l am a numnut with auto electrics. Believe it or not, the car was getting on in years but Volvo sent me a recall notice to fix an electrical problem, yes, the one l had. :)

Well . .Lucky old you ! . . lucky that you could afford to run a V6, petrol guzzling head that you are. I feel I've had a deprived motorhood, never even had a V4, although as a yoof doing security at a garage in trendy Kings Road, the night watchman, a real character, would give me the keys to a large Ford privately garaged there, and say " Your young. take that out and enjoy yourself, but be back before 6" . .Can't be sure of the model, but it was big, maybe a Zepher or Zodiac, anyway I think it was a V4, with a gear shift on the steering column ?

Had an electrical gremlin too in a 240, smoke came out from behind the dash, quick thinking gf threw her soft drink at it before I could stop her, but it worked a treat, never smoked again.

  22. Many years ago I owned three 240's and later a 740, all bought cheapish and second hand with big miles, none of which had problems. I felt they offered comfort and protection, obviously performance handling and image were not expected. So apart from being a little thirsty and some wind noise at speed (if we can call it that ) I had no real complaints. Since then I've become aware of the bad press that Volvo have been getting regarding reliability and component failures, with the internet allowing disgruntled owners to air their views so effectively. Some blame the take over of Volvo by Ford as part of the problem ( the more recent Geely China take over being too early to effect the company )

What surprises me is that there are five Volvos in my small Soi, I also see quite a few driving around Samutprakarn and there are many in the local Car mags, where Volvo LPG conversions seem quite popular. Yet I struggle to find any info regarding the pro's and con's of Volvo ownership on TV, is this because they are considered a little dull and boring in the Land Of Fortuna, in short what's the crack with the big Volvo
