I know a number of Farangs in Chiang Mai who, live on 20,000 a month and lead a fulfilling life. I think you'd be hard put in Bangkok. I would say 30,000 would be the minimum for any kind of enjoyable lifestyle. 50,000 would be better......

The main work Russians do is to act as tour guides. Since the Thais seem to be incapable of learning any language than English (and then not very well), they are unable to act as tour guides for Russian tour groups. Therefore Russian tour companies need Russians to act as Russian speaking guides. Since tour guide is an occupation reserved for Thais, the only way for these companies to operate is to employ guides illegally. Its Thai labour laws that need amending not immigration law.

Identity cannot be legislated, the loss in the referendum must have affected everyone to some degree but the article talks about 40% of voters crossing into independence camp in a space of only fifteen years.
A couple more screwups by London and the issue will come up again, and who knows how it would turn out next time around.
The fact is that there are 1.6 million people there who do not identify themselves with united Britain, you can't change it with "period".
Maybe they should consider returning to Ireland.
That kind of bigotry is one thing that drags Scotland downward and backward. If the moderators at ThaiVisa understood the full implications and divisive nature of your comment they would remove it for the claptrap that it is. Or you could do the decent thing and delete it yourself.

If this story is true, the military will be busy in the near future working on a a few million similar cases..
sounds to me like nonsense...
This is exactly why Yingluck did not win the heart of Thai people.
Her police forces only take bribe and did nothing.
Prayuth's army is different.
They sincerely work toward the happiness of Thai people.
No bribe needed, yet diligently work for the real Thai people.
That's not true. A donation to the police benevolent fund got you excellent service from Plod in my experience.

It is to be hoped that no country who believes in human rights will invest one Satang in Thailand until there is a return to democracy.

Sorry to say this ( I'm saying that as I know I will have comeback from dogooding tripe ) But this idiot could have caused a mass panic and in this day and age its not allowed, he should be charged as if it was real. And shame on CM airport for letting him through plastic or not, a discrase in my mind !
What is the point of having security? To smile and say Sawasdee? They are there to STOP this type of thing. Imagine if it was a Muslim kid with his Muslim parents on board? There would be massive panic with everything in the news at present!
This fool needs to do a few months behind bars. he is NOT oblivious to the news either!
How do you know he isn't a Muslim? Muslims take 'selfies' too.....

I broke a coffee mug in my hotel room at the Centara hotel in Khon Kaen a month or so back. When I checked out they tried to charge me 300 baht for it. I refused to pay and offered them 40 baht (my estimate of the cost of replacing the (non brand named) mug)). I was expecting a compromise deal to be struck around the 100 baht mark, but in the end they drew up a bill saying I refused to pay. I wrote on the same bill that I had not refused just offered less than they asked and everyone was happy. Businesses (and I am a former business owner in Thailand) should factor breakages - other than malicious one - into their costings.

All the confusing immigration rule changes and bad publicity regarding scams and attacks are taking its toll regardless of announcement by TAT which is a publicity stunt.
The massive increase in beer prices due to tax rises haven't helped either. The majority of tourists enjoy a few pints when they are on holiday and bar prices are nearly as high as Europe. Restaurant meals for cuisines other than Thai have also risen (and a drink in a restaurant is even more expensive than in a bar).
Quite simply tourists want safety, fun and value for money and in many respects Thailand no longer offers this.

Thailand on the UN Human Rights committee???!!!
I had to look at my calendar to check it wasn't April 1st!!! A country with a military dictatorship that has banned freedom of speech, freedom of association, freedom to dissent and rules the country by force of arms wants to be on the Human Rights Committee!!
The country that treats immigrant workers as slave labour, tows Rohingya boats back out to sea, causes a couple of hundred thousand Cambodian migrant workers to flee the country in fear, presents insurmountable obstacles to Farang husbands and parents getting residency, has an unacceptable disparity between rich and poor......wants to be on the Human Rights Committee.
The worrying thing is, they actually believe they are in the right!!

Anecdotally, I heard that the rainfall in Bangkok is only half what it normally is at this time of year. Are there any websites with data to confirm or disprove that?
-
Under military censorship, if the poll had concluded that the people didn't think corruption would drop under the dictatorship, it would never have seen the light of day.
Like most polls in Thailand -even before the junta stole power - the methodology is hopelessly flawed and the results utterly meaningless.

Am I missing something here? I thought TAT wanted less tourists. The 'big plan' was to attract high end, high spending tourists and let the backpackers go to Cambodia or Laos. Wasn't that the plan? The inevitable result of such a policy is a long term decline in tourist numbers - which is what TAT want. Isn't it? ....or has this just not been thought through as usual?

I bought a tin opener at IKEA Bangna earlier this year and it knocks spots of the locally made ones. They've also go an eclectic little food department selling all manner of Swedish delicacies. All in all, fun for an annual visit.

The irony here is that Purachai, Thaksin's home minister did exactly the same as this some years ago - went on a moral crusade to clean up Thailand - no sex workers, bars closed at midnight, kick out foreigners etc etc. The NCPO aren't doing anything that hasn't been tried before - several times. Things will soon revert to normal as the ordinary Thais are masters at getting around restrictive laws enacted by their rulers (elected or not)

"He said he would like these Thai soap operas to contain the country’s history and patriotism."
Good idea. Thailand is for the Thais. Thailand is not for the Cambodians. and it's not for people from Laos and Burma.
And whatever people say about Thailand and Japan during World War Two, it still holds true that Thailand was NEVER colonized or taken over by another country. Maybe, we as foreigners, will never understand the sense of pride that a man from South East Asia will have because of the nation never being colonized by "Europeans". How proud are the Vietnamese about winning the war against America ?I really do think that most people want pride and dignity more than they want money and economic growth.
I beg to disagree. Thailand was taken over by a more efficient and ruthless colonial regime than the Brits or French ever managed. This started a little over 100 years ago. They are still here, they own almost every business and building. they run almost every university and government department. They make up 15% of the population but own anything up to 80% of the national wealth. They are the Thai/Chinese.
As to your last comment. Utter tosh!

Dear, oh dear, TV is TV. Who wants didactic soap operas? I have some advice!! He said pompously! Stop meddling, keep your mind on the ball and get on with the job. Bribery, corruption, suborning of officials, the education system, transport, water management are a few things more important?
Well today, they had a crack down on overweight trucks (for the 5000th time since I have known anything about Thailand) and now it is soap operas.
I think they are running to the bottom of the list for things to do.
i suggest he goes back to A and finds his way to C for corruption pretty rapidly.
He hasn't started the list and never will. He's tinkering at the edges to keep his supporters in the ruling elite (and naive foreigners), happy. The real list of urgent reforms includes reforming the judiciary, higher education, the power of unelected mandarins, the system of business that forces any firm that wants to invest here to set up a Thai subsidiary with members of the ruling elite on the board on fat salaries for doing nothing, and ultimately reform of the army itself so that this cycle of coups is broken once and for all. This of course will never be done and Thailand will continue to lurch from crisis to crisis in the interests of the ruling elite
Quit the time wasting micro management and concentrate on your main objective - the eradication of corruption.
That is not the main objective and never was: the main objective is to restore power where is 'rightfully' belongs, in the hands of the ruling elite.
The attempt to influence soap operas is long overdue, but replacing the gratuitous violence and domestic disharmony with what Prayuth terms: historical and patriotic themes is extremely worrying.

business people happy with, etc.," ? To me this is a warning sign of the formation of a new " Ole Boys Club " !
I don't think the old 'ol boys club' ever went away.
How about asking the Thai people as a whole if they like men who stole power by force with guns, acting as ministers, rather just 'businessmen'?

Here in central North Bangkok it was a dry night. time the army took control of the weather.

But why would anyone want to visit a rapist, child abuser, murderer or more likely, Nigerian drug trafficker?
Because, whatever they have done, they are still human beings and the sentence is worse for a Farang or a Nigerian being away form their home country.

10 to 9 and no rain so far! Obviously the 'weathermen' bought their geography degrees and wouldn't know an Isotherm form an Isobar.

Exactly what is Veera's political stance?

Looks as if they avoid confrontation just make sure people who get too carried away get carried away.

The arrogance of the man is breathtaking. He is forming a cabinet as though he were the freely chosen choice of the Thai people instead of a dictator in jackboots who stole power at the end of a gun barrel.

Difficult for the junta to allow this kind of disruption. If they don't stop it, others will become more emboldened. alt=coffee1.gif width=32 height=24>
Police should just limit to control traffic light and issue tickets. Protector arrest should be the job of army and military court.
Would you support this kind of thing in your own country? My hope is that the answer is 'no'. Why then are you happy to see the army trample all over the rights of the Thai people?

I would rather walk than fly THAI. I usually drink on flights, sometimes a fair bit, but I have never got loud, rude or offensive. Anyway this one flight to London, an ageing stewardess told me after about 3 glasses of wine that she thought I'd had enough. I called for the chief steward, assured her that I was not drunk or causing offense etc. so he told the stewardess to serve me. Thereafter she came up every five minutes and sarcastically asked me if I wanted a refill. I might have to tolerate loss of face issues in Thailand, but when I have a choice I'd rather do without this childish attribute. So I generally fly with Middle Eastern airlines where the gals (and guys) are on fixed term contracts and when the 'crows feet' get a little to obvious the contract isn't renewed.
A quick look at their website suggests all the directors are Thai, all are men and nearly all ethnic Chinese if you use the 4 syllables plus in your surname = Chinese rule. What other airline with a global reach has such a restricted director base in this day and age? British Airways fro example is run in tandem with Iberia and has an international directorship structure.
