  1. I'm back in Bangkok and just want shirts made. I have been told that the Bangkok Post had an article listing the top seven tailors in the city it'd great to get a copy of this.

I have no idea who to choose otherwise.

Any pointers would be good though.

  2. Hi there,

I have a MD77S Talking Dict which i got second hand, I have been trying to connect it to my computer but it is not recognised, does anyone know where i can get the drivers?

I have looked on the website with no luck,

    many thanks

    Ian

  3. As i know, you can not ask for a new birth certification. But you can ask for a certified copy document.

First of all, you have to go to the police station and tell them that your daughter's birth certification is lost. They will give you a notification document

Then prepare some document as your ID card (your wife)+ a copy and the house registration documents +a copy

    Finally, go to Amphur office.

    Thanks for your reply

I should have made my original post a little better by adding: we are now living in the UK and neither my wife nor I are Thai.

  4. The whole world is very aware of the antics of drunk Brits, so give these Thais a break, they've got a long way to go to catch up when it comes to hooliganism.

And all canadians have flapping heads and beady eyes. :o

Come on, don't tar us all with the brush. I get drunk from time to time, and am never violent, or cause problems. I'm a happy drunk! Im English, and proud to be.

For the record, I am not a football fan, but the few games I have been to (Manchester United), I have never seen violence. I know it goes on, but it is very much in the minority.

Brits are hooligans? What next? Americans loud? Irish stupid?

Get a grip people. Stop being racist. Judge every human on their own merits.

    Phil

What's racist about telling it the way it is, Phil? Here's the number of entries in Google for the term I used:

"Results 1 - 10 of about 673,000 for British football fans riot."

    http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/uk/4789954.stm

    http://www.umich.edu/~uac/threeweeks/Volume2.6/soccer.html

That's just 2 out of 673,000, the condition is so well known that books have been written on the subject.

Is that the part of being British you're proud of, Phil? Facts are facts, they have nothing to do with being racist, Irish or American. Suggest you plug the links into a browser and then tell us to get a grip.

How about this clever chops? Courtesy of GOOGLE...

Results 1 - 10 of about 614,000 for rape tourist thailand.

Results 1 - 10 of about 680,000 for murder tourist thailand.

Results 1 - 10 of about 851,000 for attack tourist thailand.

So when in England stay away from football matches and supporter pubs is that what you are saying? But when in Thailand stay away from what?? Thailand?

    Your thoughts please.

  5. I am hoping that you might be able to provide me with some

information. I am a British citizen, I am currently working in Spain

where I am registered as a foreign worker. My wife who is an Indonesia

citizen is currently staying in the UK (on a 6 month tourist visa

issued in Bangkok), our two year old daughter, who is a British

citizen, is with my wife in the UK. My wife and I have been married

for three years, we were married whilst living in Thailand and have a

    Thai marriage certificate.

My problem is this: My wife is currently applying for A Family

Reunification for Dependents of EU Nationals visa to join me in Spain

and has been granted an appointment at the Spanish Embassy in London

at the end of the month. She has been told that she must, amongst

other documents, take with her our marriage certificate which has been

apostilled under the Hague Apostille convention, can you tell me if it

is possible to have documents issued in countries which are not

members of the Hague Apostille Convention apostilled for use in

countries which are members of the convention? I am inclined to think

that this is impossible, in which case can you offer any possible

    solution?

    Many thanks

    Ian Clarke

  6. Yes ... Makes perfect sense. When you are parking/leaving, you are going against

the traffic flow. This would be rather disconcerting to other drivers.

do the police ever prosecute motorcycles for driving on pavements , driving the wrong way on one way streets , car drivers for driving the wrong way on the hard shoulders so as to avoid the long drive to the next u-turn , or any of the other million disconcerting driving modes that are genetically imprinted into thais ?

the fine was just another shakedown.

would be interesting to actually take a look at road laws as written in statutes in this country.

Why should they? - I believe it is in the highway code that motorcycles may drive on the pavement if it is ¨necessary¨

  7. 500 baht an hour? where in the f do they think this is? that is like los angeles airport internet fees...this is fricking thailand...2nd world country.....should be like 10 baht an hour...look at where we are...a place where that the average person makes like 140 a month or so.....just never understood why things are so expensive here...since this is barely over third world...i was flabergasted at the increase in price at kfc at the old airport....5 us dollars for a set...ridiculous...hel_l...korea is loads more expensive than thailand in 90 percent of everything you would encounter, but the prices at airport for mcdonalds or kfc is same as if you bought outside of the airport...and the internet is cheaper there...why the f would anyone pay 500 baht an hour for internet at the airport? hel_l...japan is even cheaper at airport i believe...fricking exploitive bastards...no wonder why i have heard tourists saying they are leaving here and finding the new big travel spot...for a poverty stricken country the prices sure do not reflect its environment

Go ask the man that earns 140 baht a day if he is bothered that the rich are being taxed... I hardly think he'll be very symathetic!

The proce obviously really upsets you - try not using it when you go there.

who says every foreigner who comes to thailand is rich? and btw...why do you think tourists come to thailand? because it is a 2nd world country is suppose to be cheap...we come and expect to pay equivalent to what the local cost of living is...otherwise...why would we come?

I am really confused by this -Thailand is cheap (it is not a 2nd world country, the second world no-longer exist and as far as I know Thailand was never part of it anyway). - Who needs to use the internet at the airport for an hour anyway?

Are you suggesting that you want the INTERNATIONAL airport to reflect the condition of the country? Maybe some broken tiles and obvious blue pipe in the bathroom would make you feel better?

What is everyone so upset about? It is an INTERNATIONAL airport with INTERNATIONAL prices.

The internet will still be cheaper than at Heathrow.

look at other countries in asia that are generally more expensive than thailand...they dont rape the traveler at the airport...and the price of the interner at the airport is more expensive than lax...think about it...los angeles where the cost of living is 10 times more than what bkk is but yet the airport is cheaper? makes no sense...sounds like former soviet countries that try to rape the foreinger because they think just because you are a foreinger you have money so should be charged more than the locals

I agree with you to an extent, it is horrible to go to countries where they really believe that foreigners should pay more just because they are foreigners. However, I still maintain that 100 baht to send a couple of emails that you should have sent before you went to the airport or that you can't wait to send until you get to your hotel/ Khao Sarn/ wherever, is not unreasonable. Thailand is not in a position to give things away, nor do they ever anyway, just look at the price promos in Tescos. Buy a pack of 12 batteries - saving amounts to about 1.5 baht.

The fact remains you don't have to use the internet - You can always call at standard CAT rates.

  8. 500 baht an hour? where in the f do they think this is? that is like los angeles airport internet fees...this is fricking thailand...2nd world country.....should be like 10 baht an hour...look at where we are...a place where that the average person makes like 140 a month or so.....just never understood why things are so expensive here...since this is barely over third world...i was flabergasted at the increase in price at kfc at the old airport....5 us dollars for a set...ridiculous...hel_l...korea is loads more expensive than thailand in 90 percent of everything you would encounter, but the prices at airport for mcdonalds or kfc is same as if you bought outside of the airport...and the internet is cheaper there...why the f would anyone pay 500 baht an hour for internet at the airport? hel_l...japan is even cheaper at airport i believe...fricking exploitive bastards...no wonder why i have heard tourists saying they are leaving here and finding the new big travel spot...for a poverty stricken country the prices sure do not reflect its environment

  10. Hi all,

My family and I are moving to Europe and my wife (who is Indonesian) is waiting for her Schengen visa to be issued. We have been told that once we get to Europe she can apply for 'settlement status' with this visa. Apparently a fairly straight-forward affair, however; part of the application process is to provide a letter stating that the applicant has no criminal chanrges against them in the last five years. Having been in Thailand for four of those five years we'll need to get a letter stating that my wife has had no criminal charges against her in the last five years in both Indonesia and Thailand.

Which agency should we approach in Thailand?

    Many thanks in advance.

  11. I don't know about coups i'm more affraid of taking my 18 month old son on the plane when we go to Thailand in November in case i get a thump from another passenger. Seriousley i get mild panic attacks just thinking of it! We are flying with Gulf Air to BKK via Bahrain, two 6/7 hour flights. Anyone got any tips/advice how to get through it (aside from leaving him behind that is). I'v heard Calpol is good for subdueing them a bit? What about Gulf Air? any one flown with them and their off-spring?

The Wife (Thai) is far less worried but not much seems to faze her anyway.

    Any help would be appreciated.

    Mark

I hate to be the bearer of bad news but my wife and I flew with our then 19 month old daughter on Gulf Airlines at christmas. I can honestly tell you it was one of the worst experiences of my life.

Gulf air will provide you with an 'aircot' which is far to small for anything other than a new-born baby. Not only that there is a bright light situated above it which cannot be turned off.

On the outward flight we didn't check our buggy but were given a slip of paper that would allow us to give it to the staff just before we boarded and were told that it would be returned to us when we got off in Bahrain for stop over. When we arrived in Bahrain we were told that because I had checked it at the check-in desk (not true) we couldn't have it. After complaining to the service desk repeatedly (please remember that because of the aircot which my daughter was too big to fit in none of us had slept by this point) the buggy was finally brought to us, broken and unusable, 3 hours after we had gotten off the plane. When I requested the necessary forms to make a claim I was simply told 'it's not my fault' and 'we don't have any forms'.

I have been pursuing the claim for the buggy ever since and acheived nothing.

By the time we got onto the second leg of the journey my daughter was so tired that she pretty much screamed for the whole way to London. We weren't even offered an aircot on this leg of the flight as our daughter was over the weight limit for it (not that it was much use anyway) and I was told that this was my fault for not having booked an extra seat for my daughter. I had checked with Gulf Air in Bangkok prior to booking and they had assured me that the aircot was suitable for a child of up to 2 years old and that booking an extra seat wouldn't be necessary.

After we finally got to my parent's house where we were staying my daughter was sick through exhaustion and we had to take her to the doctor the following day. It took all of us almost a week to get over what was definitely the worst journey of my life.

For three weeks in the UK I repeatly phoned the airline to try and make more suitable arrangements for the return journey, on the day before our departure the mant that I had been dealing with told us that he was happy to confirm that we would have an extra seat to make up for the 'difficulties' on the outward journey. When we checked in we were told that no such arrangement had been made and that no one at the call center had the authority to do so.

The return journey was only slightly better in that it was a day flight and the aircot provided a small space for my daughter to sit rather than being on our laps the whole way.

When I got back here I wrote a long letter to Gulf Airlines outlining what had happened (those things above and many more) after a week or so I received an email saying that they were 'looking into it'. I have heard nothing since.

I will never fly Gulf again. I would recommend you to do the same, whether you are travelling with a child or not, the food is crap, the staff are rude and you get more leg-room on a Bangkok bus.

    Good luck.

  12. Our nanny is having to return to Burma, apparently all work permits issued to Burmese nationals under the Thaksin regime have been cancelled and people are being encouraged to report 'Burmese worker sightings'. This information is, according to our nanny, being broadcast on the TV.

Our nanny is exceedingly worried as am I. This seems a bit radical even for Thailand... can anyone shed any light?

    ian

  13. I have decided that I'll be leaving Thailand as a result of the visa regulation changes and therefore I'll need to cancel my True phone and internet. True says that this will cost me 5000 baht... who is realy liable? After all without the change in regulations I wouldn'y have to leave, does this nullify the contract?

    Any thoughts???

Playing devil's advocate here... um... just leave?

What are they gonna do, phone Interpol and the FBI?

    :D

Unless the contract is in your Thai gf's name or a Thai friend's, in that case, just pay, it's 5000 baht, not exactly the end of the world.

You can also say that the internet has been down too much, which is always true in Thailand, or go to the office and make a big "stupid farang loses face" kind of scene then they might let you off just to not have to deal with you.

Edit: Whining about visa changes certainly won't get you out of this. That's not TRUE's fault, either.

I don't believe I am whining, so piss off. :o

  14. I have to say, although I didn't really like the guy and felt he had to go I do feel kinda sorry for the chap.

Imagine finding out when you're in the full frontal glare of the United nations. I would be gutted and with the Thai concept of face quite possibly suicidal.

Not a nice way to go out.

Yes, poor chap... maybe we should send him some flowers?

  15. I have just finished reading the anti-Thaksin book: "Thaksin: The business of politics in Thailand". It goes on and on about Thaksin looking after his own interests, but the fact remains that he looked after Thailand's interests, too; and he did it far, far better than the previous administrations.

i too thought that he was good for thailand , at least in the early part of his administration.

the healthcare scheme , whilst far from perfect , was a good start and will hopefully form the foundation of a decent public health service in the future. it may turn out to be his only legacy.

the past years though have been marked by his megalomaniac tendencies , drunkeness on power and wealth and his stubborn pride. his refusal to pay tax on the sale of his shin corp to temasek was a terrible miscalculation.

his time was up a year ago and like many leaders , he just hung around when he was no longer wanted or no longer capable.

the best interests of the country were overidden by his own interests.

he had an overriding majority outside bangkok , but you have to ask , if he hadnt bought and paid for that loyalty would it have been given.

i expect that the next government will be ousted by a similar coup in 10 years time.

Wasn't OTOP his baby too? That seems to be going well.
