Big checkpoint near my house on the middle ring road last night.
Got stopped at about 11:30, in my car.
Had had many drinks, was certainly over the limit but not quite paralytic.
All very polite and friendly.
No big deal.
They are looking for drugs, I think.
Too many posters on here make an issue of nothing.
and some posters trivialize a very serious matter also.

Interesting reading well done.

Never ever open a direct deposit account. Anywhere.
Just pay the bills as needed, and keep third parties out of your bank account.
It is difficult to stop DD here in Thailand.
-
And yet nobody minds that in using agents they are committing corruption-by-proxy.
But hey, we can just pay a couple hundred 'bucks' and the agent throws some of that to immigration officers to make it speedy for them too.. easy money all around.
Walking ATMs-a-plenty!
Proof please then i can stop using them. If you do not have any proof maybe the Thai libel laws should be observed in my opinion.

I have had 2 problems of mail going missing in 8 years both were lost in the UK by the Royal Mail. One was found 2 months later and sent to me the other one was never found by them.
-
I for one did my own for 4 years ,then decided to use an agent . I would think that the agents free up a lot of time for the officers by having everything in order for each client when they arrive at immigration. Also all the extra people that would have to go to immigration each day.

I enjoyed the well-written report by Sante that starts this thread, but, I admit I am puzzled that no one, in the thread, mentions the required proof-of 800k baht in the bank for a single farang expat retirement visa, and whatever the amount is now for a farang expat with Thai spouse.
Perhaps that omission is insignificant because everyone knows about it ? ... Or ?
thanks, ~o:37;
They all might have enough with a pension you never know?.

You can use the transport office in the city ?. Near the Holiday Inn on the Lamphun Road at the traffic lights .If that is nearer to you.
-
If anyone enjoys hanging around a cramped immigration office 4 or 5 times a year that is up to them and good on them for doing that.
Also the ones who like to pay a visa agent will be feeling that there money and time are being used wisely.
The choice is open to each person whether it is 5 or 6 in the morning or 2 or 3 in the afternoon . Some people enjoy doing that others don't.

I did mine last Friday, 9/5. I got there at 5:30 am and left around 9:30. If you get there at 5:00 am, you just might be #1. Next year I am going to try using their web site and make an appointment. Have all your paper work in order, and it's a piece of cake. I have been told that for a 1,000 baht, you can get a visa service to do 4: 90 day reports. Not a bad deal. For 4,500 baht, they will do your visa extension, so I was told.
If the visa agent is not willing to come to you, you'll have to make two trips. One to bring him your passport and one to pick it up after he's gone to immigration to do the 90-day report. So if you don't live near him it might be easier to do it yourself with one (usually) quick trip to immigration. Something to consider before spending the money.
I would say if you enjoy queuing up for a ticket to get a ticket and enjoy the environment of a cramped immigration office from 5 or 6 am then keep doing it.
If not then pay the agency fees . At least you can go to take your passport and collect it from the agency at your leisure not at 5 or 6 am in the morning.

Given so many excellent English speaking Thai doctors practicing in and around Chiang Mai, why any need to seek out a Farang doctor?
There is more to a good doctor-patient relationship than language competency. I find many cultural differences here that, IM (obsolete professional) O, result in less than ideal health care being delivered. As is the case everywhere else in the world too in that situation of course.
My doctor speaks perfect English and treats me like a patient. She explains any thing I ask her for.
She reminds me of when I was a kid and we had a family doctor. she has been known to make housed calls also.
Dr Morgan without doubt is in my opinion the most caring Dr in Chiang Mai. When i required a Dr one night after Midnight she and her husband came to my home and stayed for around 3 hours after making a trip to her surgery for some medication so i have nothing but praise for her commitment to her job. As other posters have said she speaks better English than i do .

Just the numbers one of you knowledgable guys? If only for interests sake.
What is the drivers monthly lease amount?
160 baht a day 28 days per month ,the owner pays for repairs.
The old Tuk Tuks are valuable due to the Plate they have.Without the plate they are worth very little.
The drivers who you have will be very reliable and mostly no problem with getting your monthly rental.
