  1. i notice that a lot of Thai ladies shape their toe nails so that they resemble a chickens foot. they file the nails into narrow pointy talons that really gross me out.

getting pedicures in thailand is not all that relaxing, as you have to be on the ball and give quite specific instructions to NOT cut down the side of the nail.

  2. and as Marty is being laid to rest, i sit with a Heineken and raise my glass to him, and remember the good times.

drop in any time Marty. i have a feeling you will be making your presence known before too long!

    til we meet again.

  3. haha. nearly peed my pants laughing at that, G.

for the person who said to try and eat some thai food for a change - well after eight and a half years of living in thailand and eating thai foods on MOST days, often 3 meals at that - there comes a time where you just crave some good western food.

and some people just dont like thai food. doesnt make them any less worthy.

ive had those weeks, though G. you didnt mention anyone stopping in their tracks at the top or bottom of the escalator though - im surprised at that!

next week will be better, for sure.

  4. i had a tear in a ligament and a tendon in my left shoulder. i went under the knife with Dr Panya at Bumrungrad just before the Tsunami.

i found Dr Panya to be a nice man and a good surgeon, but i have to tell you that i have not fully recovered from the operation. my physio told me that most people never regain full use of their shoulders after surgery (depending on the surgery of course).

for me, the after effects of the operation was a fair bit of pain. i started physio the day after and continued for a year or more.

if someone were to ask me if i recommend shoulder surgery, i would recommend it only as a last resort.

  5. sweet (and sometimes grumpy) Marty. a dear friend who will remain in my heart forever. i was only just skyping him last week or so, and he was so optimistic about his future. maybe he was lying to protect me from the harsh reality of his fate.

i shall have a Heineken in his honour this evening and remember the fun times.

i love you Mr Wheat :o

The clock of life is wound but once And no man has the power,

To tell just when the hands will stop At late or early hour.

Now is the only time you own. Live, love, toil with a will.

Place no faith in time. For the clock may soon be still.

  6. Agree with you to a certain extend. I do find it common courtesy though to first inform somebody of a mistake made, and if that does not help post it afterwards.

    Ok pointed accepted. You're right

absolutely. i did find the OP a tad harsh, and do believe that if there is a problem, that the business owner should be contacted initially.

  7. Not the first time I hear about a place being burglarized in spite of big dogs being on the premises. Are dogs really such a surefire prevention against intruders, cannot they be bribed with a few sausages?

Experienced dog owners, please correct me if I am wrong. I am not an expert in this field, my dog owner career is limited to having had a toy poodle for one and a half years.

A trained dog does not take any kind of food from a stranger.

BTW: I am looking for a test person who tries to come inside our house or even outside to feed our dogs, pumping gas through the windows or the outside aircondition unit.

    Please apply in person :o

    Gerd

haha. i wouldnt want to be the one. your Max is one big scary boy, Gerd!

  8. Ausladyinpatong, you have got it down pat!

god, i did it all. regular massages, facials, waxing, and pedicures. loved it. i dont like manicures, as my nails are soft as paper, and not so nicely shaped, so i would rather them be untouched.

i think splurging on a nice meal every now and then is good, and the gold class movies are the only way to go!

a decent glass of wine every now and then is always a good thing, and a lovely sunday brunch is also great.

  9. Try "Bastogne Bakery" on chaofa road, the best on the island, but not cheap.

Tops supermarket bakery in Central, Carrefour in Jungceylon.

    Gerd

    gotta agree with thaigerd here.

i miss our saturday mornings at Bastogne.....

  10. i found that looking for a good hair dresser in phuket was near on impossible. then i found George at West 1 Salon. he is wonderful. yes, he is expensive, but you get what you pay for.

i tried cut and curl and they were hopeless. no imagination and they gave me possibly the worst hair cut i have ever had.

West 1 is now located in the colonial style buildings opposite Tesco Lotus.

i know its not Rawai or Nai Harn, but he was the best I found. and i am fussy. he does take appointments too.

I'm told he is too expensive and too full of an inflated opinion of himself . :o

he IS more expensive than others - but you pay about the same as you would pay back in 'the west'. but as for having an inflated opinion of himself, i did not find George like that at all. he knows what he is doing, he does a great hair cut, and he is busy all the time.

of course others may have a different opinion and experience to mine, but i did find that having over 20 years experience in London, he really does know his stuff.

  12. A British man on holiday with his wife is believed to be dead after an attack by a gang who jumped on board his yacht.

Police in Thailand have arrested three fishermen, suspected of murdering the man off the Andaman sea coast.

He's been identified as 64-year-old Malcolm Robertson from the English county of East Sussex.

It's thought he was out sailing with his wife near the island of Koh Dong, when his attackers climbed on board the yacht and tried to steal a raft.

Mr Robertson was attacked after confronting the thieves; it's believed his throat was slit, and that he was then thrown overboard.

Police say the suspected attackers were migrant workers from neighbouring Myanmar , and that they confessed to the killing.

The body has not been found.

  13. i went back to Phuket this week for a business trip. i CHOSE to stay in patong for convenience, as i used to work there, and wanted to catch up with some old friends.

wow. what a change i noticed!

patong itself is no different really, but the thing that DID bother me was the fact that a stinking tuk tuk (now more yellow ones these days) wants 200thb to take someone from burasari up to the other end of the beach! i nearly choked on my banana pancake when i was told of the price (well, only joking about the pancake, but im sure you all 'get' it).

the rest of the island has changed a heck of a lot:

the fountain(?) from chalong circle has been removed to reveal an upside down saucer

home-pro has opened up a huge number of stores

the amount of 'condo's' being built is phenomenal. i cant believe the number of these things that are going up. and it appears that there is only one architect on the island!

more shops in jungceylon have opened up which is good.

there are more cops on the roads.

i am not sure whether all of the above are negative or positive changes, but i guess they are just progress. and having said all that, the drivers on phuket are still CRAP.
