  1. I use phonenet calling cards, available from the CAT telephone offices throughout Thailand....and available online. Calls to the US are 1 baht per minute. I use my mobile phone to call from anywhere in the country. Been using this method for many years.....crystal clear calls. https://voicebycat.com/catvoice/index.php/en/individual/cat-phonenet-thaicard/cat-phonenet-thaicard Free calls.......I use LINE to call our daughter in the US. The app is free and the calls are also crystal clear.
  2. Some years ago, in the middle of downtown Udon, an older woman was trying to cross a busy 4-lane street, just before a roundabout. She was in a crosswalk. I was in the righthand lane (of the two lanes). I stopped and waved her on......as she started to walk past my truck, I quickly found out that the people in the lefthand lane weren't going to stop for her. I cringe at the thought that my stopping could have resulted in her injury/death. I realized the error in my judgement......Thais don't stop for people in crosswalks. Pure and simple
  3. I applied online last week, got an immediate email saying the application was in process. I noticed the same thing about the blank arrival card number........but within 18 hours, my report was approved. So, I don't think that's what's not working for you
  4. Must be my lucky day! When I took our dog out for her morning run, I spotted a pair of hoopoes on the ground at our entrance gate. One flew off right away, but the other stayed while I stood motionless for a few minutes. We saw a hoopoe in the yard several years ago.....but not recently, until today. I found a hoopoe mp3 on the internet, and that's the bird that I've been hearing. The name in Thai is นกกะรางหัวขวาน - ax head hoopoe Thanks for the offer to id~
  5. I live 18km outside of Udon. Recently there's been a bird(s) in an area thick with bamboo. I can hear them but can't see them. Similar sound to doves......but definitely not doves. I'm trying to identify by sound using an app on my android smartphone. Can anyone suggest an app that works for birds likely to be found in this part of the world?
  6. My Siam Commercial Bank app allows me to transfer money to my account in the US. No need to go to the bank. I can transfer 1,500,000 in one fell swoop. I've only done it once (in a much smaller amount, just to test it out. Worked as advertised.
  7. At least 6 expats in Udon have recently received their third dose of pfizer after first/second dose in Aug/Sept.
  8. In the first two or so years of learning Thai, a lot of the locals would say "พุดไทยเก็ง". I was pleased. Only later did I conquer the tones. That's when more of the locals, if they said anything, would say "พุดไทยชัดๆ" For me, the secret was finding a Thai who learned Thai from her mother who was a teacher. She wanted to further her English......I wanted to learn Thai. We'd swap 2 hours of English for 2 of Thai....one on one. When I wanted to know how to pronounce difficult sounds (ง or เลือ as compared to ลือ, for example) I'd make her speak in half speed with me doing a closeup on her lips/face. I feel comfortable with my pronunciation...although I've never been able to nail down the difference between ต and ด. FWIW: I have profound hearing loss and wear hearing aids, age 72. Don't let anyone tell you you're too old or you're tone deaf.

    Cash refused

One of my 'getting old' fears is getting left behind by technology. For that reason, not long ago I started using cashless payment. Like the self-checkouts in the US, cashless payment takes a bit of getting used to.....but in the end, it's easy and convenient to use. I wouldn't be surprised to see stores have cashless checkouts with a single line for those clinging to their cash. You haven't been forced out of the place, you've chosen to not use a readily available and proven-safe payment system.
  10. If you're going to 'learn' Thai, go all in.....read/write/speak. I started at 55, wear hearing aids (profound hearing loss), but lucked out with a neighbor who knew her Thai (mother was a Thai teacher) and wanted to expand her English. Twice a week, 2 hours of English, 2 hours of Thai.....no charge either way. I tried an AUA class before that....15 foreigners....all wanted to learn different aspects of the language. That didn't work. Any way you go about it, it takes a lot of work. If you convince yourself that you can't do it, well, you won't succeed. I think I've counted over 3000 reasons to learn Thai......far too many to list here. The list grows daily.
  11. There was a thread on this subject a few years ago, now closed (I'd be interested in any updated info on machines that are available now.
  12. First thing I'd do is fix the 'small' toilet leak. Then if the water is running for a long time, I'd go to each toilet and jiggle the handle to be sure the plunger isn't stuck in the open position. We had a similar problem with water running at night....on occasion.....found out it was a plunger that didn't always seal. Easy fix.

  14. I'm getting 16.66kpl on my Revo 2018 truck......40,000km, fill up and excel sheet everytime. I squeezed out 18.68kpl on one tank.......but a single tank isn't a good gauge.
  15. Lazada has the stickers for 13 Baht https://www.lazada.co.th/products/thai-english-keyboard-sticker-i308960923-s542318746.html?exlaz=d_1:mm_150050845_51350205_2010350205::12:12654756915!117524295342!!!pla-294682000766!c!294682000766!542318746!130050318&gclid=Cj0KCQiA5aWOBhDMARIsAIXLlkfK3srEpQYtvV7S8lyYc8f0iKjEJEGa94D4v-N6IQZMV_M3EXjvbdMaAt0gEALw_wcB
  16. I'm not aware that there's any 'official translation' of a foreigner's name into Thai language. When I got my pink ID, I wrote my name in Thai on one of the forms and that's what they gave me. Likewise, my Thai wife of 49 years.......just recently changed her last name from maiden name to my last name (it's a long story). She asked that the Thai name be spelled the same as what I carried on my pink ID. No problem.
  17. I bought the Samsung Galaxy Watch3 in the US last Nov. While in the US for a few months, I was able to use the ECG app without a hitch. The day I returned to Thailand, I was unable to use it.....feature not available in Thailand. When you try to download the app while in Thailand, you'll get a message saying 'this feature not available in Thailand'
  18. This place is in Pitsanulok and does hearing aids......but I can't tell from their facebook page what brand. https://www.facebook.com/ศูนย์การได้ยิน-และ-เครื่องช่วยฟัง-พิษณุโลก-785724724925424/ I live in Udon and have been wearing hearing aids for 15 years. First pair I bought in Khonkaen......they were okay, but after a year, upgraded to Oticon brand in Bangkok. I've since upgraded a few more times (about every 4 years) in Bangkok. It's a pain to travel to Bangkok for fittings and periodic software updates/cleaning, but the service in Bangkok is very good. I've used Audimed and Eartone.

  20. A very simple game http://www.thai-language.com/id/805664 But I learned on a program similar to the one at https://thai-notes.com/typing/typingtrainer.html I remember it being similar to the one I used to learn typing English decades ago (not an online program, of course).
  21. I used SCB's phoneapp to transfer from my Thai account to my US account.....88 Baht fee
  22. Food for thought: While in Houston, Texas for 5 months (6 years ago), caring for a cancer patient, my wife ran out of her favorite body cream. You'd think....with all the varieties in the US, but no......she wanted the one she's been using for 20ish years. Our daughter found it on Amazon......it came from Jamaica, same brand, same cream. Last year, marooned in the US for 13 months due to Covid, my wife ran out of Salz toothpaste. Nothing else will do. Our daughter found it on Amazon.....probably a few hundred baht per tube, but whatever makes the wife happy. You might be surprised to find that particular brand of shampoo available where you're at....search for it in English, Thai
  23. Start by cutting the edges of the lamination and use the blow dryer to blow warm air on to the lamination. Once the lamination is heated and the air is pushing between the paper and plastic, the edges of the lamination will peel away from each other. I tried this today with an old US form that was laminated years ago. It worked.
