  1. Make sure it's got GENUINE software installed. A friend of mine bought a new PC from top floor in Tukcom Pattaya and later found out his Windows was not genuine.

Lol, genuine OS in Thailand? Bet your friend didn't pay for a licence though, did he? Hence why he doesn't have genuine software.

I've bought several laptops over the years in Thailand and never had problems with cracked OS - they have always passed authentication.

  2. Heard of some good scams, which took Thai on Farang scams and turned them on their head.

Thai girl and Westerner chat online for several months. Strike up friendship and promise of more. Westerner promises to visit said girl. He "flies" to Thailand. Upon his "arrival", girl receives phone call along the lines of, "your boyfriend has a problem at immigration. Go see the man at entrance XYZ and pay him 20k Baht".

Another being run out of Taiwan is to call Thais and claim they owe crazy sums on their credit card. Details of bank accounts held and balances collected. Instructions provided to resolve the problem at the ATM. Mark instructed to select English at the ATM and given instructions along the lines of, "push 2nd button from top on the right" etc. End up transferring away all their money. One girl even had a call from her Mum who said not to do anything but visit a branch; silly girl said she was taking care of it and hung up.

Anyone who falls for anything like this, no matter what the country, is a moron.

Details of these kind of things are all over Pantip.com.

  3. Case in point, bring the fat hairy farang his plate of tasteless farang food that he ordered off the farang menu with the farang price. Bloody lovely.

Shut up you farang with a rice-milk-colored iris.

  4. Thanks for all your replies, I had to buy a new printer, I didn't have time to wait :(

I actually looked around for non-branded ink cartridges but couldn't find any! I ended up spending B1400 on a new Canon iP2770, I suppose it's just an upgrade on my last printer(iP1980) and yes, the cartridges are only partly full but it's still, as BWPattaya said "The time and money wasted on trying to effect a satisfactory repair would be better spent on a new printer. New printer means new ink, new guarantee, and you will get a printer that works".

On a side note, I have refilled my cartridges before but now the colour one is broken, is this an effect of a shoddy refil or do they only have a life of around 1 year?? Refils for black were B80, colour was B140...

How many times did you refill? You can't do it forever.

  6. You really should upgrade to SP3. No need to do a fresh install, just let windows update handle it for you.

As part of the update you'll install Windows Malicious Software Removal Tool which has been widely reported to identify issues crashing Explorer.exe, such as Gaobot Worm for example.

Does the hang happen with al folders you try to view, or just those with huge amounts of data (~100G+)?

You could also try increasing the size of your page file, beyond the standard 1.5 x RAM to see if this fixes the issue.

Have you tried all of the obvious things - defragged HDD and registry for example? Recent virus/malware/spyware scan?

  7. Unnecessary IMO. You don't need an emergency decree to fight the threat of terrorism. We managed without one through years of IRA bombing campaigns.

Harms the country's rep too; loads of cars/taxis with farangs in getting stopped around Asok after 6pm.

I see, I go to Asok for my Thai class often hang around afterwards to meet my friend in Ploenchit when she gets off work, sometimes if we hang out light or the weather is really nasty we take a taxi back often between 7 and 10, or if she has to work very late and she comes here she will get a taxi. You know that has never happened to me (farang) or her (Thai).... Hmmm are you here right now... Of course tons of farang disregarding the law there may be stopped... U seem to be in a Bangkok that is in another dimension than the one I am... Never been stopped anywhere for any reason.... Maybe because I obey the law... (I admit though I am generally an MRT/BTS and bus person)

Most definitely here! I didn't say every farang was getting stopped, but Thai friends who live and work around Asok report an increase in the numbers of stop and search.

I drive regularly and within the law. Never experienced trouble myself with the police. The only time I've been asked for my passport by the police when travelling by taxi was just outside of Samut Sakhon, in the run-up to elections, some time ago now.

  8. Does anyone think that 3bb's service has gone downhill recently. I seem to get a lot of disconnects and outages which didn't happen before.

Generally I've been happy with 3BB. I connect very close to the package I pay for (16 meg). However, I am close to the exchange.

That said, this problem with secure connections has cost me quite dearly today. All my services now down again. Annoying considering I'm paying more for a slightly slower connection than I would back in the UK.

  9. Bangkok ./ Chang Wattana here and with 3BB.

All https and services requiring a secure connection (Outlook, Thunderbird, Live Messenger, LogMeIn, Vivaldi etc) have been blocked all day.

Things beginning to sporadically return, drop-outs regularly occurring. In the time of writing this, LogMeIn has stopped working again but Live Messenger is still up.

    Email clients still down.
