  1. I recommend sleeping in the same room as a woman or better yet a small child, as they seem to be preferred targets. Avoid scented soaps shampoos and creams and if a mosquito does get in, odds are it heads straight for the woman or the kid.

You are a really nice person. whistling.gif

and you seem blind to humour. unfortunately i refuse to pander to people by using smilies.

As to the person who doubts the veracity of my very real first hand experiences with deet and mosquitoes or mosquitos and scents , you have never worked in a logging, tree planting or herbicide camp in northern BC.

Regarding shampoo and scented products. try sitting beside a woman who has just showered and lotioned after dusk and watch her hair.

Feeding hearsay? if you are speaking first hand it inst hearsay. the alternative is you are calling me a liar.

in higher concentration it is nasty stuff. It permeates skin very easily, accumulates and prolonged exposure can case neurological damage.

the following i found in 10 minutes: there is much more out there.

i am not screaming hysterically that it is dangerous, i occasionally use it very sparingly, but i would not apply to my child. anyone thinking of applying it daily at home should be well aware of what they are using, especially in higher concentrations, though i dont believe you can get much more than 30% here

DEET is an effective solvent,[4] and may dissolve some plastics, rayon, spandex, other synthetic fabrics, and painted or varnished surfaces including nail polish.

Can DEET damage clothing and other materials?

DEET is known to melt some hard plastics. You should be careful to ensure plastics, such as rucksack clips or sunglasses, do not come into contact with DEET, as it may damage them.

We sprayed some 100% DEET on some sunglasses, and it totally destroyed them.

Clothing should, in general, be OK when sprayed with DEET, unless it has any plastic accessories.

100 percent deet applied to sunglasses

Obviously done a bit of research - well done.

Did you know that if you drive a car with faulty brakes at 100mph through a crowded shopping centre you will more than likely kill someone? but then it's not recommended usage is it?

Also try taking a paper tissue and soaking it in water and then blow your nose - result, snot all over the place because the water dissolved the tissue, amazing heh!! (make sure you use 100% water - don't try to dilute it).

Rubbing alcohol is a fairly potent solvent and yet we still put it on our skin to treat wounds - crazy stuff.

And please send me a woman fresh from the shower but I can't promise to watch her hairthumbsup.gif

good points, i guess i did not really look at it that way.

ill just leave you alone with your bad self. good luck finding that woman.

  2. fair enough. thank god im not running a web empire.

i cant help but noticing that you managed to type all that without providing a suggestion.

    thanks for coming out

"All that", like I gave you a thesis!

Impossible to reccomend hosting without knowing requirements. Don't you think?

Bluehost suspend for TCs violation with ~600 daily page views. Hardly a "web empire".

please document that because in my experience it is blatantly untrue

  4. I'm on Asoke with an 8Mbps line and the best I am getting now is around 40KBps. It went out early this morning with a very dramatic drop in speed.

Plus I have been having very long load delays on most web sites today too.

thanks same here. crawling now, web surfing is viable, but downloading forget it. im luck if i get 2mbps now.

so much for a quiet day vegetating with an entire season of battlestar galactica.

  5. Lay's used to grow all of their potatoes for use in their Thailand crisps in Lamphun, don't know if they still do or not.

    I rather like Lay's spicy lime crisps . . . wink.png

Btw, I used to find FRITOS (!!!!!) at Villa Market, but that was 10 + years ago. Haven't found them in Thailand for over a decade. sad.png

they are still around upon occasion

  6. The regular are not to be found in Phuket either. I have a friend that has a few mini marts, and she told me that her chip distributor claims that Lays only uses the best potatoes, which are in shortage now for the plain chips. The #2 potatoes are used for the flavored chips.

I love Kettle brand Salt and Vinegar.

i have heard this a number of times over the years -- generally put like there is a shortage in supply of adequate quality potatoes.

  7. I prefer popcorn made in, of all things, my microwave rice cooker.

Okay, spill. Where did you buy the microwave rice cooker? I can't imagine they'd be hard to find in Thailand of all places, but I seem to be looking in all the wrong shops...

central chidlom kitchenwares. About 6 years ago though.

its got a heavy cermaic bowl in it that keeps rice warm all day after its been cooked, pop out the ceramic bowl and throw in some corn and it pops popcorn. love it, best 400 baht i ever spent (not really)

  8. given the current climate and concerns over terrorism you would think the US consulate would know better than to have a group of random people throwing packages around a busy public market place.

how do you reckon homeland security would have reacted to that cute little show?

you would think the fact that thais lay down on the pavement without laying down newspaper first would have set off alarms.

  9. i used to do it, before mediaplayers emerge. Nothing can beat simplicity and speed of a modern mediaplayer and win7 media player interface is total crap. Xbmc is nice though, still better to use mediaplayer to watch / stream movies over usb/network.

ditto. i got really tired of windows and its issues and went to wdtv live. neither a regret or a hassle since.

occasionally i plug the laptop in via hdmi to stream hulu or something, but rarely.

i need to start experimenting with xmbc. i fiddled about with it once, but had to reformat the machine before i got any real joy out of it.

i remember now why i nuked it. i got an addon script erro no matter what i tried to watch. still happening after reinstall

  10. bluehost.com 6 years never even the slightest problem.

i run about 8 sites off one plan, all indexed and first in their category. certainly first page.

1 primary and 7 add on domains correct?

    I have 9 i have to migrate.

    correct

  11. and a new lays flavour i had the misfortune of trying "American Cheesey Paprika"

Paprika chips is hardly an american thing. German, yes, American no.

    kettle sea salt and pepper.

lorenz are good, but something about them gives the impression they are 80 percent msg, the flavours are just too defined.

I prefer popcorn made in, of all things, my microwave rice cooker.

butter, parmesan, seasoning salt, onion salt, paprika, you name it. experiment. And you know exactly what you are eating

  12. this is the crux of the issue, what you want is the resolution, rather than the screen size.

i currently use a 16 in sony vaio, at 1600 by 900, and the 15.5 inch they have on the market at full 1080 is the way i would go.

there is no point to low res large screen unless you are blind as a bat. with that limited resolution you are not gaining any real estate for the increased size in form factor.

EDIT: On reading over the threads, i see sony now has the I7 out. I would go with the 15.5 for sure. the new f series 16.5 is a brick.

Edit 2: The 20K increase on price is due to a 7200 rpm hard disk, Nvidia vs AMD Graphics, Bluray vs DVD, 8 gb vs 4gb RAM.

Edit 3: there is a discrepancy between the specification page for the hard disk and the main pace on the 15.5 c series. Front page says 5400 rpm hard disk at 640 GB. spec page says 7200. i would definitely confirm before purchasing as a disk upgrade would be a minmial expense

It's a bit of a pity that you cannot customize the sony laptops (not that I'm aware of anyway).

I do not need a 7200 rpm HDD (would stick in a SSD if I need the performance and use the existing drive in a USB 3 enclosure for storage). No need of a Blue ray drive and no need of a fancy video card (no gaming)...

So the 15.5" full HD is the best buy and excellent price/performance IMO.

Agree a 15.5" full HD AND a 8 GB memory card!

Nowdays 4 gb start to become limit.

that is what i would do too. 8 gb Memory.

too bad you cant ditch the bluray and upgrade to ssd.

  13. If you don't speak any Thai at all, you can always point, but half the brilliance of Thai food is in how it's eaten - what spices to add, sauces to dip, etc. Watch those around you.

    Have fun.

LOL thais aren't gourmet, they add anything they see available to their dishes making them too salty, sweet or spicy.

Only listen to what your brains tell you to add AFTER you tried the dish.

    twunt

  14. We looked into adoption when we tried and could not have a baby. But we heard a lot of oppositions toward adoption over here from both officials and regular people. They all said when baby grows up they tend to find natural parents and eventually go to them. it is cultural.

finally we had our own baby and it is a gift

An utter load of <deleted>. that sounds to me like a convenient excuse to talk yourself out of adoption

being personally adopted, and knowing adopted kids Thai and otherwise i would say this is categorically untrue.

besides, most places wont provide any information regarding the biological parents without their consent, and then not before a child has reached the age of majority.

there may be some curiosity, but believe me, kids know who has got their back.

honesty is the key, i have always know i was adopted, so there was never a moment of shock.

there is a stigma attached to adoption in Thailand, most thais are pretty much closed to the idea, period. taking the advice of a Thai "official" on the matter boggles the mind

  15. deet is nasty stuff.

the 100 percent stuff clearly warns against putting on your skin, it should be sprayed on clothes or something else which it will eventually eat or at the very least disclour. It will make very short work of a pair of nylon or plastic sunglasses, essentially melting or softening the plastic away.

when i used to work in the bush in northern BC, some would wear bugh jackets, mesh jackets that would be soaked in deet to keep the bugs away. a co worker of mine had his shirts ride up placing the deet-soaked bug vest between a utility belt he was wearing and his skin. he suffered waht looked like very severe acid burns with the skin "melted" away in patches and very nast blistering in others. to this day he still ahs the scars and they can be seen clearly on his hips and above when he swims or takes his shirt off.

use sparingly, even the 30 percent stuff can have nasty consequences if mishandled.

why not place mesh inside the grills? though i suspect all that will achieve is to prove to you that the central AC is not the source.

i have had mosquitos in my living area daily(ground level house with significant vegetation around it) since i moved to Thailand.

The black hole works well at minimizing and almost eliminating mosquitoes, which are impossible to keep out between the maid, the 5 year old and guests constantly opening and shutting the exterior doors. I also have an outdoor kitchen which necessitates traffic to and fro frequently.

Bedroom doors are ALWAYS shut so mosquitoes in the bedrooms are extremely rare.

I recommend sleeping in the same room as a woman or better yet a small child, as they seem to be preferred targets. Avoid scented soaps shampoos and creams and if a mosquito does get in, odds are it heads straight for the woman or the kid.

I would suggest any fears of dengue or malaria in Bangkok are largely misplaced -- as someone else said, it is the mosquito that bites you at dawn or pre-dusk that will do you in -- and i personally haven't met that mosquito after 12 years in the same house, and i am bitten regularly.

Remember, dengue takes a around week to present, so it is likely once symptoms appear, you will no longer be where you contracted it.
