  1. I've never had a problem getting a taxi to use the meter.

About a month ago I met some visiting friends for drinks near Asok BTS/MRT. When I left it was around 12:30am, so MRT was closed. There were several taxis waiting along the street in front of the MRT station. I asked one to use the meter to HuaiKwang MRT station and he said NO, flat rate 120thb. I said no thank you. Someone else jumped into his taxi. I asked the next taxi, and he said flat rate 100thb. I offered 80thb and he said ok.

Seems like you did have trouble getting a taxi to use a meter. They have to by law and will be fined 1.000 baht for not agreeing to take you. Why not report the next one, but then you never have trouble getting a taxi to use a meter, or do you? Try outside Central world and see how that pans out. Here's a tip, never ask them if they will use the meter, that's just an invitation to say no.

  2. That's one cool dad

Cool? What would a 13 year old girl know about sex? He should've hired someone with more experience to show the kid the ropes. Not that I'm condoning prostitution. I wish Thailand and it's mongers were free of it. How much more pleasant it would be smile.png

It does not say how old the girl was, she could have been 17 years 11 months old for all we know.

  3. That has been happening a lot lately in Bangkok. Taxis refusing to use the meter and charging more.

No it hasn't, there are, however, a tiny minority of drivers who do this.

It's not a minority in tourist areas or around central world, Sukumvit has always been OK but around the Royal Palace and Khao San they want 100's to go a short distance, all illegal of course

  4. It might be a 'gift' up to a point and although no guarantee of ability qualifications do help!. I wonder how many people would consider being a doctor a gift and be happy being treated by an unqualified one? When we are talking about English teachers being lets loose on Thai kids some have different standards to back home. Would you be happy at an unqualified foreign teacher back home teaching your kids who only wanted to be in the country to be with his GF? probably not. Why should Thai kids have to settle for unqualified inexperienced teachers just because some foreigner wants to see his GF?

  5. Funny thing is they never have done it before, I can see it may not lead to confusion about a 90 day report date not being the same as the extension date, they always have messages about this at SP on the electronic sign board. I'd rather go to SP than CW though, good service, but the office is far too small for them.

  6. Went on Tuesday to samut prakan for 90 day report and was surprised to see the next date to report is not 90 days but just over 30. Did ask why and she said the next date cannot be over the date when my extension runs out, so they are now both on the same day. Although she said it has always been like this it's the first time in 8 years they have done it. Actually it will save a visit but you could end up having the next date stamped just a few days before the extension date. You certainly live and learn at immigration. How early can you do a 90 days report as I like to get the extension done early, leaving to the last day is not a good idea.

  7. Nothing is ever done about unqualified foreigners coming here and 'teaching' English just for their own benefit, unfortunately. You are NOT an English teacher so why do it without proper training, without a degree you will be illegally employed anyway. Would you let a novice fix your car or take care of your teeth? or teach your kids? Thailand really does not need another clueless English teacher thank you.

  8. PS - if you want to teach English in Thailand there is one more thing that will prove invaluable....that is the urge to TEACH.

As a teacher you have a responsibility to your students and just hoping that it will give you a way of financing your stay i Thailand with your g/f is not enough.

Not just the urge - he needs the ability to teach English, and in a manner that works with Thai kids. The OP does not say if he has ever taught before and getting a TEFL that almost nobody can fail is a bit like getting a Thai driving licence and thinking you can drive. It should be far, far harder for foreigners wanting to teach here, no wonder the level of English in Thailand is so poor. Thai kids are being taught by Thai teachers who mostly cannot speak it, and foreigners who mostly cannot teach it effectively. My advice is do the kids a favour and don't do it.

  9. In many Thai Banks, the rule may be amended at any time, made retrospective at any time.

But usually, "the rule" is written (in favour of the Bank) after more than 3 complaints have been received.

Last year one large transfer of mine was held up, the bank had the money but the wrong ac number, by the time it was sorted the exchange rate had gone up. They gave me the lower rate when they had received the money, understandable. A few months later a much larger transfer, similar hold up only this time the rate had gone down from the day they received it- so they gave me the lower rate on the day they put it in the account, a loss of 40k!

No amount of asking for an explanation got anywhere, it was a case of they can so they do, rules made up as they go along it seems. This was Tanachart Bank.

  10. I have had a hotmail account since 1997. Now it asks for a code they sent me to sign in with, when I enter the code nothing happens at all so can no longer log in. I have looked for an email contact but cannot see any, is there a solution ?
