  1. There probably is.

However I would be wary of hiring a freelancing Farang, likely without work pemit. Repercussions for the person working illegally are relatively mild. But for an 'employer' they are quite severe. I would not want to blur that line by inviting someone to my house. If it's a house call it needs to be a Thai person.

  2. Farang prices? All the shops that build bespoke systems have detailed price lists.

It's a long time since I heard that word. You're not an ex Saville Row tailor by any chance? wink.gif

Saville Row tailor turned Jungle Guerilla turned Chiang Mai Sexpat. ;)

  3. As one the ex-pats who has maintained a residence in Mae Rim far longer than most, I fail to see the good in this. I don't want to see Mae Rim turn into another Hang Dong or San Sai. No need to spread such dreariness to yet another district. Mae Rim already has one of the better traditional markets around in kat muang pa, and we have any number of small shops along the main street whose owners go out of their way to be helpful and who have competitive prices to the larger chains. At least they have the decency to situate this store south of town. I just hope they don't connect the parking lot to the back road. Oh well, I'm trying to talk the wife into relocating up to Wat Chan, but without much success as she is delighted at this news.

But people need their marmite and peanut butter! wink.gif

    Peanut Butter:

The market mentioned by Johpa has peanuts. It will have an electrical food blender. It may even still still have some cooking oil. Combine the three and hey presto: peanut butter.

    Marmite:

The market mentioned by Johpa will have pick up trucks parked in front. Find an old Isuzu KB. Scrape some black crud out of the exhaust. Add soy sauce and K.Y. Lubricating Gel and hey presto: Marmite.

There's some benefit in letting a shop build it to spec, because if something breaks there's no doubt as to who's responsibility it is. So I would find a shop that has most of the components you want, and then let them build it.

or go the other way: take some of the systems they offer, and then ask for upgrades on specific parts.

You can do quite a bit of leg work to save a minor amount of money IMHO.. I'd just pick a shop that's reasonable and professional.

  5. อ้างกับชาวต่างชาติเสมอ ๆ ว่า รู้จักกับตำรวจชั้นผู้ใหญ่

Bob would claim to other foreigners all the time that he knew a high ranking police officer.

    ผู้ต้องหานั้นได้พยายามปฏิเสธว่ากัญชาไม่ใช่ของตนเองเป็นของคนอื่น

The accused tried to deny that the ganja was his, saying it belonged to someone else.

He said that he bought the syrup from the market, to mix with an ingredient that he didn't know was ganja.

    Maybe they believed him?

California lock up your kids, there's a new terrorist in town!

Knowing a high ranking police officer is quite different from that officer putting his career on line for a case with kilos of evidence.

First he said the ganja was not his, then he says that he did not know it was ganja. That is funny, like trying to sort out a thirteen year old kid.

Actually more like trying to sort out a newspaper written by people with the mental capacity of a thirteen year old, if that. (applies to all Thai newspapers that I've seen, both Thai and English language)

  6. It's not particularly cold at night, but also not particularly warmer than seasonal. Still quite nice to sleep without having to turn on the fan.

As for pollution though, I would say it's unseasonably clear. This is mid February right now and the sky is blue, the views clear as a bell. What's going on? We should really be seeing the first signs of haze but..? Are the Burmese farmers slacking?

  7. This is really really worrying (i guess thats what they want).

I noticed the pound was upto 50 against the baht last week but is now back to scraping 49, was this a trojan horse...

Tuna has been predicted to run out within the next 5 years due to over fishing but oil and coconut... in Asia... wow!

I can't believe the world is like this now thanks to some really selfish banking families. I really hope we all come together soon and fight back.

I'll join when the shortages impact the beer supply.

  8. Word on the grapevine is Bob has been deported and blacklisted already, no charges will be brought in the US. His wife has been released without charge also.

Sadly Spanky's will not be re-opening for business.

Don't worry, it's only a matter of time before other places will offer the same great burgers & stuff...

  9. LoL all of the other candies represent some kind of emotion, happy, sad, shocked, ect. I wonder how a candy is supposed to make you feel Hitlerish???

What you eat it and all of a sudden you want to take over the world or what?

No. In Thailand, 'Hitler' means 'a fierce and unkind person'.

  10. And another 500 Burmese and local punks off their faces on Yaa Baa. There sure is a drug problem in CM but it ain't because of a few retired ex-pat hippies smoking pot. :whistling:

    When become drugs a problem?

It becomes a problem when Burmese boys become desperate for Ya Ba, then prostitute themselves to his gay friends even though they're not gay, then end up in a Ya Ba fuelled rage and stabbing the elderly gay gentleman 20 times. Then it's a problem, or at least that's the impression I can't escape reading Paagai's posts.

Perhaps the biggest reason is because it is forbidden. Because it is illegal, the mafia takes the lead (and want people to use dugs of course). Do we speak about an alcohol problem generally? Only when a person drinks to much he or she get a problem. And in traffic. I am not pro or anti drugs, I just notice there is so much hypocrisy.

Ya Ba is worse than alcohol.

  11. Well, I don't think there are any bars anywhere that don't have PFP girls later on at night. It's perhaps about the percentage. Do however note that sometimes those women also just go for fun, not necessarily for professional reasons.

As recent as last Friday Fabrique didn't charge a cover charge to get in. High prices for beer though; perhaps the key is to bring in a bottle.

It's probably a good idea to start a glossary at this stage so we don't get caught up in jargon and abbreviations, and remain understandable to all:

    PFP -- Personal Finance Planner.

haha yes I know - I actually go out to meet 'respectable' girls not 'professionals' and it's sometimes a disappointment when I think I'm doing really well with a nice gal and she 'reveals' she needs 'help' and 'support' or the family's Buffalo (no offence Winne) is sick *sigh*

I think it's a sliding scale into a gray area. Everyone appreciates some help making ends meet.

It's been four months, but I am going to recommend Dayli for having the coldest, cheapest beer in town. Mostly upwardly mobile Thais. Your waitress is more likely a university honor student, than a lot of things. Food varies, but the special salad is great. There is almost always BBQ out front, that you can bring in and eat, if you don't like the menu.

    Interesting.. Where is that located?
