  1. As most probably know already, the fees fro renewing a Uk passort are undergoing a massive reduction in cost from April 7th.

I just looked on the website for the procedures and noticed that it an now be done via an offce in Bangkok. The procedure is basically the same, with the exception that you cna now take all documentation and fee to this office who then send it off to be processed and returned to the office for you to collect when notified of its arrival with them.

    The Trendy Office Building,
    28th Floor,
    Sukhumvit Soi13,
    Klongtoey-Nua,

I just looked at the website for applying and it says you can pay by credit or debit card.

Credit card I don't have and not even Thai Airways will accept Kasikorn Bank debit card so I suspect the UK Government wont either.

Can anyone tell me if other methods of payment are available?

I tried paying with SCB debit card that did not work, so i had to get a friend to do it on a english credit card.

I don't think there is any other way to pay it.

go to Bangkok Bank ask for a Wesren Union / Bangkok Bank money transfer made out to the passport office ( whatever name it is these days send with appropriate forms , job done, I am just amazed that they want you to fill out a from listing all your credit card details and post that with your documents , in this day and age of Paypal etc etc

  3. This reduction comes as a result of efficiency savings made over the last 3 years by bringing back the processing and issuing of overseas passports to the UK, whilst maintaining the highest levels of security and customer service.

Funny how they ask you to put all your credit card details on a form, that is included with all your colour photocopied details then, don't you think??? WHy cant you get a transaction number when filling in your form. Then send on online payment using Paypal or something similar. Or is that thinking too logically????

The new fees are as follows: Adult 32 page passport £83.00 Child 32 page passport £53.00 Jumbo 48 page passport £91.00 (Child and Adult). Yes result in this respect, glad I have been holding back on doing this. Shame it isn't coming sooner though :(

  4. The road safety campaign should be on television. Paid advertising slots during the most popular shows. Not exactly rocket science is it?

    "Clunk, click every trip"

worked elsewhere in the developed world about 40 years ago. Time to catch up methinks.......

TV companies should be complied to show "Public Information" adverts free as part of their agreement to broadcast.

These should include: first aid, road safety, crime prevention, etc.

When do the auditions start for the actor to play "Reginald Molehusband"?

    The script reads:

This is the story of Reginald Molehusband, married, two children, whose reverse parking was a public danger. People came from miles just to see it. Bets were laid on his performance. What he managed to miss at the back, he was sure to make up for at the front. Bus drivers and taxis changed their routes to avoid him. Until the day that Reginald Molehusband did it right. Not too close, far enough forward... come on Reggie... and reverse in slowly... come on.... and watching traffic... and park perfectly! Well done Reginald Molehusband, the safest parker in town.

HAHA, and not a whistle blowing hand waving poochai in sight , and please, do not say they are all in Bangkok.

Could also get any number of overhyped current pop star to do the acting or get Chewee to do it , he is always looking for a good publicity stunt.

  5. Wish the frigging Foreign Min would pull its finger out of its own arse and allow passport renewal to be done in other countries, and at same cost as back home in UK, just like wot sweden does for its citizens and holland etc. Sort that out Willie boy , and you may get my concern, and be seen to be fair and not scamming Brits. And you think you can comment on what is happening to people in another country, look after your own first, I say. thai people couldnt give a monkeys arse what the UK Govt thinks.

  6. By the way, don't they have any native English speaking editors at The Nation?

Sent from my Nexus 4 using Thaivisa Connect Thailand mobile app

Is that because they cannot employ a farang into a job that a Thai can do , I wonder?

Or maybe it is worried that a farang may write articles that are unbiased and possibly honestly inflammatory or make sense , hence showing up the abilities of the current editing team.

  7. Grounding? We don't need no dam_ grounding!!!

I might sound counter intuitive but you can be safe without grounding. The electrical world changes frequently and many of the DIY people may not realise this.

A device called an RCD - residual current device, or safety switch (depending on where you come from) will give a lot of protection (although not 100%) and does not a require an earth or ground connection.

In laymans terms it looks at the electric current going in to the device with that flowing out of the device. It should be equal. If it is not equal it operates and turns off the electricity supply.

Now if we think about this it becomes clear that if the current going in and the current going out are not equal then the difference in current must be going somewhere else - maybe through a person!!!

Bear in mind that the current may also be equal if you grab one of the electric wires in each hand you most likely will still be fried.

One of the drawbacks of such a device is that you can experience nuisance tripping if you have moisture in a device such as a hot water system or even an electric stove element, although in my experience this is not so common any more. The installation of these devices has become mandatory in some jurisdictions.

They are available in Thailand. I've seen them, and purchased then at Global House.

But my electricians ( jack of all trades), did not fit any cicuit breakers to cooker hood, only + and - ve cables and the sockets for my tv and M/ave are also not grounded as the simple light up screwdriver and sweaty hand methods also prove inconclusively. They did fit them to the showers however , Bless 'em . ya have gotta watch the darlings.

  8. Grounding? We don't need no dam_ grounding!!!

The "electrician" who installed a water heater in one of my bathrooms a couple of years ago: "No need to connect the green wire? It will work that way."

A culture that cannot see beyond the tip of its nose.

Same here in the house in issan ( new build, old builders ) "why i need green for cooker hood, and all other appliances sockets in house, Will work OK . Mai khaow Jai, and these guys are still alive ??

  9. Hi guys.

I am planning on a move to Vietnam soon and was wondering if anyone here has any experience with how to go about getting :

    1. Criminal background checks for the time I have spent in Thailand and previously in the UK ?

2, Can anyone recommend any shippers or carriers that are based on the Eastern Seaboard to get my stuff over to Vietnam.

Thanks in advance for any advice that can be offered.

  10. Will be interesting to see what penalty she is given as a farang rather than the situation being a reverse , ie a farang killed due to stupid thai drivers pulling a left in front of a motor bike ridden by a farang. A couple of weeks ago while doing 80 Km/hr on my bike an idiot just pulled over into the cycle lane and came to an abrupt stop right in front of me, no indicators and no particular reason why either, he just could not be bothered to slow down a bit then pull in behind me, Luckily I was also able to slam on the brakes and just about swerve around him . Through my rear view mirrors, I think I saw a police car we had passed 500mtrs back pull up to him , but i did not hang around to see what they did and just went on my merry way. But if I had hit him what would his penalty have been???? or would it have been my penalty ???

  11. no comments about the torsos and abs of the guys in the video ??? ( no I am not gay), but it is ironic that in thailand a video such as this should get so much attention for basically showing hidden cleavage which is on the whole bigger than the average Thai woman's or made to look so, in a land that surreptitiously sells sex for tourism, whilst condeming it in events such as Sonkran when girls get theirs out . ( and no surreptitiously is not a play on words, check it out !)

  12. Hi

I am thinking of buying a second hand car , I have been told that I will need a residency certificate from immigration .

Does anyone have any info on exactly which forms I need to process tis requirement ?

There are about 4 residency certs listed on the immigration website and I am also told that I will need to initially fill in an application from in order to get what I need.

    How much do they cost?

What is the correct number of the application form I need to fill in?

I have looked on here and on the immigration website , but have not been able to clarify the answers.

    Thanks Guys

  13. If Thailand really wants to speed up the learning of English , then they should stop dumbing down Hollywood and other Western movies with over dubbed Thai, both in the cinemas and on TV. They could use subtitles which would help the Thai ear know what is being said and improve listening skills.

Carrying out this action could also instil a greater will in Thai kids to learn English a lot better, as they would hope fully realise that listening to and understanding the original soundtrack makes the movie a whole lot more enjoyable.

  14. Another important factor in achieving this goal is to instil a will in the students of Thailand to learn anything at all without copying. This will then be the generation of new thinking teachers, as you cannot teach an old dog new tricks. The vast majority of Thai teachers in whatever subject have been through the old mill and newer younger teachers just hot brick walls within schools if they try to change any old methods for new that older teachers cannot grasp. The same goes fro trying to get the kids in school to also think outside the box.

In essence Thailand has a snowball in hell chance of becoming the HUB ( another hub, don't make me laugh, again) of education in ASEAN.
