  1. When once walking along sukhumvit a couple of years ago , think it was actually in Onnut, next to the BTS station, I saw a major demolition being undertaken, and was astonished to see a lot of what looked like Amosite ( Brown asbestos) sheeting broken up and lying around on the ground , mixed with lots of other demolition debris, all open to the elements where people were walking by. It sure did look like the many boards I have sampled during my 7 year career as an asbestos surveyor and consultant.

Thailand does need to wake up to this problem , many good points have been raised in the threads here, many people I am sure have probably died in Thailand before the associated health problems have kicked in, but children are also being exposed to it and are more likely to suffer the consequences in early adulthood.

There are many cement boards I have seen throughout Thailand and no thought will be given by workers cutting/removing these boards, when a little advice to keep the job in hand wet with water to minimise release of fibres, and to also wear masks which are as appropriate as they can be, would be advantagous in protecting workers.

There is plenty of evidence to support the associated hazards of asbestos if only those in power could be bothered to investigate it, but in Thailand , even if they were to ban or control its use, how on earth would they control / police its use or other work involving it when demolition of buildings occurs and people are ignorant to what material they are handling?

In a former home here in Thailand, an older type building, Asbestos cement sheeting formed most of the ceilings and internal walls, as did many of the neighboring buildings. If and when these buildings are demolished, to be replaced by newer buildings in the future, who will advise on safe removal procedures? Where will the removed materials be taken to for safe disposal??

Many questions are to be answered and maybe that is why the authorities are also reluctant to address the problem, adding the money probably involved in being better off to let it pass by, I doubt it will ever be a major cause for concern for the powers to be, for quite some time, to be honest.

  2. I am strongly recommending an optician in BanPhe.

Went to visit an optician on the recommendation of a Thai friend, where i received a very comprhensive eye test, better than any of the regular shops in the malls etc. Probably the best test i have had anywhere in Thailand, the guy speaks good english too. His shop name is Nit watch and optic, he is located next to the Krung Thai bank on the road where the piers are. post-115850-0-84557000-1420086080_thumb.

  3. Several porn companies have moved shoots out of the county over the last two years in response to the ordinance. The number of porn filmmakers applying for permits in LA County has declined sharply, from 485 in 2012 to 40 in 2013. Industry officials have contended the ordinance is not necessary, citing their requirement that working actors be tested for sexually transmitted diseases every two weeks.

The last confirmed on-set HIV infection was in 2004. After that, the adult industry adopted the biweekly testing for a range of sexually transmitted diseases.

Test every two weeks but can act as often as they like within those two weeks ???? obviously does not work does it, especially if it cannot be detected in the very early stages. Money is the operandi here obviously.

  4. This is the Chinese marketing equivalent of the taxi driver returning the wallet with 100k inside.

Those wallets always seem gargantuan and thise foreigners always carrying so much cash.

    Stomach colic and heroism...strewth...

Sorry to be super cynical but I can't even see that this flight exists.

Airlines to Add Nanning-Bangkok Flights in July

    By Leon Zheng, WCARN.com | Jun. 27, 2013

With the cooperation of Guangxi Airport Management Group and Hainan Airlines (HU), the scheduled flights from Nanning to Bangkok will be increased from 3 to 4 weekly on every Monday, Wednesday, Thursday and Saturday starting from July 11.

Flight HU7993 from Nanning to Bangkok is scheduled to take off from Nanning at 10:30 a.m., and land in Bangkok at 11:40 a.m.; while the return flight HU7994 will take off from Bangkok at 12:45 p.m., and land in Nanning at 4:10 p.m. (all local time).

Besides, Guangxi Airport Management Group will join hands with Orient Thai Airlines (OX) and travel agents in Nanjing to introduce a charter flight from Nanning to Bangkok on July 4, with one flight weekly.

Flight OX 619 from Nanning to Bangkok will take off from Nanning at 3:15 p.m., and arrives in Bangkok at 4:40 p.m., while the return flight OX 618 will take off from Bangkok at 11:00 a.m., and arrive in Nanning at 2:15 p.m. (all local time).

You must have searched really hard to find it since I was able to Google numerous references to such a flight in a matter of seconds. Perhaps you really didn't try very hard since it would conflict with your obvious cynicism.
    That is July.

The current Orientthai website shows Phuket only. Their wikipedia doesn't show currently Nanning. Google shows no flight times.

So I did check, and I saw your link already which is a newspaper release from July. Wow. Am glad I don't use you as a travel agent.

Only Hong Kong listed as a foreign destination.

And now the bickering begins ,,, carry on kids

  5. I used to stop but not anymore. Cars overtook me and motorbikes on the inside. Oncoming traffic continued . Then the people who I let cross got knocked down. It's safer to keep going!!

Additionally, when one does stop for pedestrians they just look stupid at you and don't cross the road anyway??? As you rightly point out it is probably due to a fear of being knocked down by another jerk off driver who has no road ettiquette.

  6. Basically, if theres nothing crossing your path (ie another vehicle) then thais WILL NOT stop for a red light as they know better than some stupid idea a farang invented.

Theres something different about green lights tho. When the green comes on they sit there wondering what it means for 5-10 seconds before crawling off just before it changes back to red.....which the following 10 cars ignore

That is probably because they know the other cars watching the next green light will also wait 10 seconds before moving. Don't you get the Thai logic behind that. 5555 wink.png

  7. So what are the measures ?

My local municipal government will be leading from the front as usual for New Year and Songkran.

Their traffic centre will be set up under several canopies complete with tables chairs and power leads for the hot water thermo pots.

It's manned 24 hrs by municipal staff earning lots of lovely O/T and sometimes young recruits from the local basic training camp but quite what their function is beats me as they never seem to actually do anything except eat, talk, read and sleep.

Are they not there to provide a rest area and coffee to tired motorists?

Of course, how one could possibly get quality rest with 2/3 of the population driving past these canopies at any given moment is yet another question, but then again, many Thais can sleep anywhere, anyhow, under any conditions.

  8. Bit of bad reporting about this story. They have omitted the fact that this guy has retired over here and has been here for the last 2 years so any sort of holiday insurance is not possible. It is the cost of repatriating him that they are trying to get money for. How many people have insurance with no limit on it? Also how many expats have insurance that covers repatriation?

Yes personally been looking at taking out such insurances myself, but as a teacher in thai schools , they are quite simply too bloody expensive on the standard approximatley 30k /month salaries paid to foriegn teachers over here. A figure that has not increased in 20 odd years or so , I believe.

Hope this guys family can get him home soon .

  9. So a couple of years back a couple of muslims walk around with back packs outside a school in BKK , one gets his legs blown off and the other dies ( I think) when the bomb goes off prematurely outside the school ( presumably ) one guy writhing in the street legless .... Not Terrorists....????

A couple of weeks ago an African Ebloa suspect walks around freely in BKK and authorities have no idea where he is after they let him out of the airport to go to his hotel .... Security measures are tight .... ??????

Just in these two examples , i think it says it all really. No idea , the lot of them...

Oh and wasn't there a case of a building in BKK, being used as a bomb making factory, blowing up some time ago ???

  10. Here's a theory and it is only a theory;-

    1. It is often reported in the media that the BIB support he whom resides in Dubai and his entourage.

    2. There has been a recent case of one top BIB and his entourage being defamed very recently under the new powers that be.

    3. The present powers that be want to encourage quality tourists to LOS

    4. Is it not therefore possible, that the BIB are giving a sort of backhanded message in the manner of , up yours matey!! , we will do everything we can to counteract everything you are trying to do, to recover tourism , until we get some sort of parity with what you are all now getting away with ???

Could it be that organised ???

    Just a possible theory.

  11. I have little sympathy with the taxi drivers and the response in the article borders on the ridiculous. I wouldn't mind paying a little more for a better service and if the service is Ok then I always tip. it is when I ask for the air con to be turned up slightly for a while and I get a reply of "I am Ok and cold" or could the 'Isaan Music' be turned down slightly, and I get a no, then there is no tip. With many services here in Bangkok I find that the concept[t of repeat customers is a difficult point to understand bad it is always the new customer that counts.

When asking a taxi driver who opens his window and ask 'where you going, I use to reply ''to your house" as out of 20 taxis I would get an OK from one. I just move on to the next ones. Possibly a little bit of training on driving with passengers, tips on customer service and dare I say, knowledge of Bangkok and the taxi drivers could get themselves a licence or certificate having a standard of quality. Just a suggestion. I certainly wouldn't mind paying a little more. Then they could display this 'badge of honour' so customers would know that they have done some form of formal training.

Yeah , but then it would not be 5 minutes before they all started copying and displaying their jobsworth badges, or another scenario would be Somchai does the test goes to work , then leaves his jobsworth badge on the car and the next unqulaified taxi driver gets in the car to start the next shift.

They all have a licence badge in the car with a pic of the registered authorised driver on it and his ID number , but how many faces of drivers match the face on the displayed badge in the car???

Unless this "badge of honour system" you propose, is policed openly and honestly ( another joke for another post ) it would never work.
