It’s about time the authorities started to act against the gangs of Africans that have started to take over lower Sukhumvit road in the last couple of years.

Walking between sois 15 and 5 after dark you’ll get asked aggressively a dozen times by these low life criminals whether you want anything from them.

Anyone who cries racial profiling is either ignorant, not been to lower Suk recently or is an African street hustler.

Last time i was in BKK i was constantly harassed by Black Africans in the Soi 5 area.

  2. I recently took out travel insurance for a Singapore Airlines flight  Koh Samui to Brisbane return.

Morning of the return flight i had an accident and was detained in the A & E dept., of the local hospital, consequently missing the flight.

I have medical cert to confirm, not allowed to fly for one week due to concussion.

I informed the insurance company  AIG in Bangkok by email, that i would be in the UK for several weeks, describing my accident and subsequently having to pay for another flight back to Samui. And that i would contact them on my return to Thailand. At the time i contacted Singapore Air who informed me that all flights  in my class were fully booked but could only offer Business class or First class.  Thinking that the insurance would not cover this, i found a seat with Qantas/Emirates at approx the same price.

Consequently  the insurance company have sent me a letter declining my application on two grounds.

Both these two grounds were incorrect and not applicable, so i sent them a polite letter explaining their mistakes. That was on the 2nd of October 2017.  To date, 15th October, they have not even acknowledged those letters. What can i do next. A friend has told me that there is some kind of a department on the island where disgruntled  or unsatisfied persons can appeal against the  Singapore Airlines/AIG Insurance decision.

Can anyone give me advice on this matter.

    Regards OS

Yes KK i think that you correct in every way . Nephew set p/w for  windows 8.  Have found an Indian tech who got straight to the problem . Non genuine windows 10 downloaded. He is going to sort it out from bios pw and  put windows 8 back ,

One problem, the Indian tech suddenly 'smells' a big payday !

That tech man sounds like an idiot. Avoid him. But good luck finding anyone better in Thailand.

As mentioned, it is possible to reset the BIOS password. I think it unlikely that your nephew actually set a BIOS password anyway. It is much more likely that he set a Windows password. Have you asked him what he did? What actually happens on-screen when you start the laptop now?

A Thai technician is likely to have installed some sort of pirated version of Win10 rather than doing a proper upgrade from Win8 to Win10 using official MS software. This should be avoided for obvious reasons.  Either way, it would not be possible to install Win10 without either knowing the existing Windows password or resetting it. It would also be necessary to know any BIOS password that was set. So if he has installed some sort of Win10 then at some point he must either have known or reset the password(s), and that must have worked. You could question him about this but good luck getting a sensible answer: he will more interested in protecting his backside.

At the very worst you can reset the BIOS password, wipe the drive and reinstall Win8 using MS media and the original product key. Then upgrade to Win10 yourself if you wish.

You might want to wait a bit on the buying anything till you've actually lived there for a few years. TVF has many stories on the pitfalls of buying in Thailand, and you would do well to research a lot and wait a long while. You should be aware that you can never own the land, and more than a 30 year lease is apparently a scam.

If it goes wrong you will most likely walk away with nothing. The legal system does NOT work like in Australia. Plenty about it on the internet. Check out the Brit that got well and truly done in Phuket.

Other advantage of waiting is that Samui is but one island to live on, and is on the expensive side compared to elsewhere. I could be wrong, but 10,000 baht a month seems exceptionally low for anything "nice" on any Thai beach now. You might get an apartment in a Thai area in a town for that.

I used to love Samui, but now I won't stay on it ( IMO it's been destroyed by concrete ), preferring Phangan, but you'll only know if you stay on both, and in multiple locations, as every beach is different.

Someone mentioned Hua Hin. I hate the place, but many love it. Only way to decide is to stay in the places for at least a month, and preferably longer.

If you like deserted beaches, South of Chumporn is ideal.

You can talk to all the people you want, but everyone has different opinions.

If I was going to live on a Thai beach, it'd be Chaloklum.

YES You are wrong. My bungalow is 2 yrs old very nice 1 b/r and  just Bht 9000 there are older ones here in equally good condition Bht 8000.

Some people voted Maenam Beach as number 9 in an Asia's Top 10 beaches (on some Travel Site I have forgotten the name of) – commented as quiet, swinable at all times (no tide problems, but not swimable during monsoon storm), and good view (to Phangan...:whistling:) – only one more Thai beach came in the Top 10 (as #4), and that's not Chaweng, nor any other Samui or Phangan beach...

So for the different opinion: I prefer Maenam Beach, just so much better than Chaweng and Lamai beaches...:sorry:

    Spot on KhunPer !

  7. Problem.

Whilst in the UK on holiday my nephew who knew that i needed a new laptop, gave me his previous one as he had up graded for his business.

The laptop is an ADVENT MONZA T200 and in perfect condition but with Windows 8.  My nephew cleaned everything off it and loaded a new p/w. all working ok.

I was advised to get windows 10 so took it to a tech who said that he could do it for me. When i went back to collect, he said that Windows10 is installed but will not accept the p/w which my nephew put on.

The tech said that he cannot help as the Bios p/w might now be locked.

What is  he saying, does this mean that the laptop is permenantly  locked and is no use to me ever.

Perhaps there is a puter whizz out there who can advise me what to do if anything is possible.

Any constructive advice or help would be gratefully received, thank you.

  8. At the resort where i live, there is a very nice ,almost  new  1 b/r   fully furnished bungalow for rent, With flat screen TV for BHT 14000 month. I have a similar one but 2 years older Bht9000. So there are places around here at Maenam for well under Bht 20000

Thanks Impulse...Good questions....We all know that this kid (and at 21 he is still a kid) has been extremely stupid and was extremely naive. He was completely unaware of the seriousness of his offence or the consequences of his actions in Thailand.....He is indeed learning the hard way.

I thank everyone for your replies, some more judgemental than helpful, but it seems that the obvious action going forward is to get a good English speaking local lawyer onside ASAP.

I will post again with any news In the hope that it may help others in the future. Whether you agree with smoking weed or not I think we are all in aggreement that it is extremely foolish and even disrespectful to smoke weed in Thailand, but if there is anyone on this forum who can honestly say they have never done anything stupid or even disrespectful in their lives please make yourselves known to us on here so we can all admire you!

    Cheers....Mario

In my day, at 21 you were a man, no longer a kid. But i guess that is how society is in 2017.

The unfortunate part for this person is that he did not engage his brain before taking an illegal substance.  No matter what your opinion is of whether is should be legal of not, it ain't at the moment and may not be.  And yes, people do make mistakes, some just bigger ones than others and could pay dearly for it.

Here he is, in enough ditty at the moment and you want to provide advice that if he wants to break the law again, then he should do it here or there.  Fair dinkum, some people really leave a lot to be desired and are obviously in the same brain camp, or lack of them, as this young bloke, who unfortunately, has decided Thailand is the place where he has his little puffs.  Doesn't really matter how much he had, it is illegal and if he can't stay of the stuff, then don't go on holidays.  Just look at the mess he is in.

As some have said, get himself a lawyer one who can speak and understand English because there is a difference, as obviously he doesn't speak Thai, and hopefully the lawyer can deal with the BIB without the matter going to court and the young bloke having his stay delayed any more than is necessary.:wai:

I really don't think i could trust any Thai lawyer after the Koh Tao  fiasco.
