  1. I am a British national, and wish to buy life insurance, I don't trust the insurance companies here in Thailand, and want to buy it in the UK also it is cheaper and can get much higher coverage than Thailand, I have looked at some companies ket facts documents, and they say if you move abroad and have critical illness cover or premium waiver cover they need to be informed, does not mention anything else. I have a UK address I can use for correspondance. If I can I would like to have a joint policy covering my Thai wife, if possible anyone had any experiance with this? I am here as a long term tourist on a non O visa, with visa runs, visiting my wife who supports me now & then.

  2. There is a sports club on a side-soi off to the left of Pridi 42. I know they have tennis and a pool, don't know about other facilities.

Do you know which side-soi its on? I had a brief look around yesterday and couldn't find it, 42 is longish it goes into a business estate at the end.

  3. There's a small gym on Pridi Soi-46

Just head down 46, continue until you get to 7-11 and turn right. It's in the first building on the right, you can see it from the street.

I used to live above 7-11 on soi 46 at 3k Mansion, do you mean under that building? I haven't seen it before will have a look tonight.

  4. I am looking for gym on Pridi Banomyong, I don't want anything fancy, I don't want to get ripped of by big names.

I saw one on Sunday at the Petchaburi/Pridi Banomyong intesection, but was closed at the time, has anyone been there and know what they charge etc?

Or if you have any information on any others on the soi's of Pridi Banomyong please reply.

    Thanks

  5. Kasem Samran Mansion 2 on Phra Khanong 34 tolerates small dogs or cats that are not noisey, the rooms are about 4000 or 5000 per month, 4 month contract. There is an on site mini mart, salon, and restaurant, but on the downside there is no internet, so you will need a 3g stick from one of the many carriers available,

  6. Much ado about nothing- when I fly to Phuket I rent a car at the airport. Reasonable rates and never have to deal with all the nonsense being reported in this and countless other threads.

I agree this sounds like a much simpler solution, but have you ever had an accident in your rental car?

Does their insurance cover foreigners 100%, bail bond etc etc! You will never know until the worst happens to you even if its a international company it can still go wrong!

  7. You'll be fine, just turn up at the airport, with old & new passport and flight ticket out and 20,000 baht + a sweetner for the immigration officers, you be on your flight, the worst that will happen is, being detained for a few days max, then deported at your own expense, but don't worry about blacklisting, unless you are a serious criminal that won't happen.

  8. I think you have no chance of using this device Hutch network, and also they are phasing out hutch and going to upgrade them to 3G soonish.

You might be able to get them mechanically altered at a specialist shop at MBK, I don't know for sure but, it might be worth an ask around.

  9. You can unlock it, and it will work on any network here in Thailand if you can put a sim card in it, but the unlock process slows down the IPAD and consumes alot more battery.

I sold my IPhone 3GS that I had to unlock from Australia, because of battery issues, and the not being able to do a standard update, because any update erases your unlock, and then wipes your phone, it was a nightmare, just wait until the unlocked version is released.

Do not touch these IPAD 2 locked with a barge pole!!!

    You have been warned!

  10. I opened a TrueMove postpay account with my retirement visa. DTAC refused to open an account with the same type of visa. After 6 months using TrueMove, think I'm better off with pre-pay since my experience is that they have a problem with overcharging minutes. This has happened to me when I was out of the country, so I am quite sure their accounting system is inaccurate.

    I can't get a post paid contract as I don't have a work permit

You only need a work permit for working, anyone who tells you different is wrong.

They tried pulling this work permit bullshit on me down at the 'True' office in Fortune IT mall a couple of years back, I told her she was wrong and to go and check with her boss.

I didn't have a work permit and she was wrong as her boss confirmed.

From my personal experiance, I find your information incorrect, True, Ais will not offer a postpay account to a Non-Thai without a workpermit, I have been to many offices and called them at True headoffice, and they refuse every time, DTAC will do postpay if the applicant has a credit card, and I think a pre-authorisation is taken and a charge ship is competed for secutity but not sent to the bank.

Please can you tell me where you opened your account? I have been to 10+ branches they bkk want work permit.

  12. Do a google search on IEC 3G, I have used them they only offer HSPDA, so you can download at 7.2mbps and upload at 384kbps, they only cover BKK at the moment, but are the best priced I think, you will need to use google translate to view the website. True offer HSPA download 7.2mbps and upload 2mbps(currently) but True are much more expensive, but have coverage in BKK & Pattaya.

  13. Was it a Barclays debit card or a Barclaycard ? If a its a Barclaycard, they will replace a card abroard, and will organise emergancy cash, it debit card then I don't think so look below.

Have you got a card protection plan, travel insurance or home insurance that covers outside loss, if you do then whey will help you secure an interest free loan or some type of funding to keep your holiday going.

But who goes to a foreign country and keeps all their eggs in one basket, always leave a backup card in your hotel safe or something like that!

  14. Yesterday on the way home from Central Rama III i saw two guys on motorcycle colliding with a taxi on Narathiwat / Sathor intersection. The policemen went there, looked on the guy lying on the floor and the other crawling around, put orange cones around, lit up a cigarette and waited for Poh Teck Tung - from the other side of the road I didn't see if the guy was dead or just hurt but the police guy did not care at all - and the taxi driver just sat in the car and didn't even got out ... and of course no helmets...

We hear so much of this, with motorbikes over Songkran. I wonder does the car driver or their Insurance, still have to pay up?

Like motorcycles on the expressway like this you mean..... They should be banned during the songkran celebrations

Are you sure this is an Expressway? There are many elongated elevated sections of roads that look like this that are not Expressways, for example if you go on Ratchada Rd it goes into Wong Sawang Rd, then Charan Sanit Wong, this picture looks very much like this road and motorbikes are permitted on these sections.

  15. There will be no hard and fast set amount, so many factors come into the equasion, how many occupants you have, how long are they in the room, how many showers they take, what condition are the air con units, police corruption, the list is endless!

I understand what you are trying to ask, but you will not get an answer on this forum or anywhere else, you just have to give it a go, but be prepared to lose your money, if you do it good luck.

  16. It really depends on the share ratio in your area, you might get the 1mb, but you might not. If there are other major users you are screwed. You would just have to chance it I'm afraid. But the extra download would be worth ii.

I use True 3G, and I can upload at 2mb, and download at 6.5mb. So the speed is available it just depends on how True manage it.

  17. If your Bangkok bank debit card has a chip on it, you cannot make any purchases card holder not present - CDNP, the old debit card without a chip has limited CDNP but you will have to set it up via phone banking, You can still get the old card from any branch in the city where you opened the account.

Thailand is very security concious of CDNP transactions because not like in the UK if someone uses your card information without your consent you can get the money back from your bank, but in Thailand there is no such protection. If someone steals your money you will never get it back. YOU HAVE BEEN WARNED!

From the regional passport office in Hong Kong

    How to pay

You will need to pay the exact fee (passport fee(s) plus return delivery charge) either by credit card using the credit card form, or by International Banker's Draft, payable in Hong Kong Dollars (HK$) to "British Consulate-General Hong Kong". We only accept debit cards which have either the Mastercard or Visa symbol, as usually these can be processed as payment by credit card. No other debit cards are accepted. Please note that if paying by credit card, the payment will be taken in Hong Kong dollars at the prevailing rate when your application is received. Your credit card company may charge an additional fee for this. We do not accept payment by personal cheque.

    -----------------------------------------

If I was you I would get a Bankers Draft in HK$ I am sure HSBC would be able to issue one in Bangkok and also many large branches of any major bank should be able to do the same, this would be your best option, do you really want to take the risk of your debit card not working, because Bangkok bank also used verified by Visa, and this wouldn't be available for this type of transaction.

    I hope this helps.

  18. It would depend on the quality you require, if you are using BBC IPlayer, then 1.5mbps should easily cover it, I use Expatshield VPN to watch UK tv, and during the day & evening in Thailand, it is not good enough to watch it live streaming but after 1 or 2am its watchable, it will differ depending what VPN you use.

My internet is True Move 3G and I get 6.5mbps nearly all the time, to Thai & international sites.

  19. Sorry but unlimited 3g internet is a thing of the past in Thailand, I currently have it with true move, but they have changed the package for new customers now, to either 3gb or 5gb per month then after that the speed is throttled to 256kbps, which is less than EDGE I don't understand their thinking they should of throttled it down to say 512kbps, then it would of been useable.

I think you might be able to buy an 30 hours 3g service from true but it works out quite expensive, just take a look at their website.

IEC which uses TOT is the best value package if you have to pay per GB, but not sure if TOT have 3g in Pattaya, they have in Bangkok, and 1gb is 100 baht, but they have new promotions all the time.

Not quite right. EDGE in Thailand maxs out at around 236.8kbps, with TRUE's EDGE being limited to around half that figure. So 3G at 256kbps is still eminently usable.

You are not correct about EDGE, I have used Ais, DTAC & True move EDGE and all connnect at 384kbps, and I can download at about 350kbps or about 43kbs, so EDGE is faster than 256kbps 3G, if you don't believe me I can supply screen shots showing this. But the ping time might be slower on EDGE, depends on True's setup on 3G.

Perhaps some more research is needed. TRUE cap their EDGE throughput at around 115kbps, so it would be impossible for you to download at the speeds that you have indicated. Perhaps something has changed since I last looked.

It is not the netoworks connecting at that speed, but your modem's capability(384kbps). Much like LAN connecting at 100MBps doesn't mean that your Internet throughput matches.

But I would be interested to see your screenshots showing your downloads running at 43kB/s.

    From the DTAC website......

EDGE and GPRS are data technologies built on top of the GSM mobile standard. GPRS has speed of up to 40 kbps. EDGE has speed of up to 200 kbps. dtac's EDGE network is designed to give you a reliable speed.......

So whilst, theoretically, EDGE can offer a maximum data transfer rate of 384kbps, you are the first person I have read who claims to be receiving it. But from TRUE, no way.

Try running a poll asking people to document their EDGE download speeds.

So again, if TRUE are offering a 'solid' 256kbps connection after 3GB, it should be at least as good as any EDGE connection in Thailand.

Where did you get capping at 115kbps, did you just dream this number up?

I have attached my screen prints,

Today I could only manage more than double your quoted speed at a total of 277kbps, which exceeds 256kbps of the poor 3G for new users.

But I am one of the lucky ones with an on going contract so unlimited at very high speeds.

Do you even have True move?

Maybe you are using EDGE through a mobile phone because some of the modems are limited to that type of speed, you tell me to do my research before, how about you!

I also attached my 3G download speed of 6.58mbps, I'm sure you will doubt its authenticity, but I don't need to lie about it.
