  1. New York CNN — Former President Trump’s campaign sent a letter to Facebook’s parent company, Meta, Tuesday petitioning them to unblock his Facebook account, a source familiar with the letter tells CNN. 4. That is a number that is subject to more speculation than accuracy. China has been less than transparent in releasing data. According to the WHO numbers, it was 5,200++. Since Dec., China has reported that around 60,000 people have died from Covid. It's pretty clear that whatever numbers are reported, they are probably pretty far from the actual numbers. As far as the population decline, I doubt it has much to do with Covid deaths, but Covid no doubt has played a role in the decline. It's difficult to know how many families decided against having children with Covid circulating. It's hard to predict how many people never married or even met to start a family because of the lock downs that kept people separated. https://www.cnn.com/2023/01/14/china/china-covid-deaths-intl/index.html https://www.worldometers.info/coronavirus/country/china/

  7. At least six people, including a mother and her 6-month-old baby, are dead after an “early morning massacre” Monday that authorities in Goshen, California, said may be related to cartel activity. Deputies who responded to reports of gunfire after 3:30 a.m. Monday found six victims, including two who were in the street and one who was in the doorway of the home where the gunfire erupted, Sheriff Mike Boudreaux told reporters at the scene. The mother, who was 17, and the child were both shot in the head, he said. https://www.cnn.com/2023/01/16/us/goshen-california-massacre-six-dead/index.html
  8. Hong Kong CNN — China’s population shrank in 2022 for the first time in more than 60 years, a new milestone in the country’s deepening demographic crisis with significant implications for its slowing economy. The population fell in 2022 to 1.411 billion, down some 850,000 people from the previous year, China’s National Bureau of Statistics (NBS) announced during a Tuesday briefing on annual data. Analysts said the decline was the first since 1961 during the great famine triggered by former leader Mao Zedong’s Great Leap Forward. https://www.cnn.com/2023/01/16/economy/china-population-decline-sixty-years-intl-hnk/index.html

This guy has a rather impressive criminal record, including this: The Albuquerque Journal reported in July that, if Mr. Peña were to win his State House race, he could be blocked from taking office because of a criminal record that included burglary and larceny convictions. The Journal reported that Mr. Peña had served nearly seven years in prison after a 2008 conviction for stealing from big box stores. https://www.nytimes.com/2023/01/16/us/albuquerque-democrat-officials-shootings-arrest.html

  19. A dozen people with links to a French far-right group go on trial Tuesday, accused of plotting to assassinate President Emmanuel Macron and commit a string of other attacks. Prosecutors say the 13 members of the group, Les Barjols, conspired to engineer a putsch, which involved a plan for an attack on Macron during a public appearance in 2018. Citing evidence collected online, from telephone conversations and meetings, they say the suspects also planned to kill migrants, and attack mosques. https://www.rawstory.com/far-right-group-militants-go-on-trial-for-macron-assassination-plot/
