Classified documents from Biden’s time as VP discovered in private office
Scott replied to Scott's topic in World News
No, it is not their job to know where all classified documents are. They are not a policing agency. They are, among other things, a storage facility and a repository for records. -
Ukraine war: Russia's Wagner Group commander requests Norway asylum
Scott replied to Scott's topic in World News
I think actually granting asylum will be low on the totem pole and will take a fair amount of time. If they grant asylum, he is basically free to do what he wants. He also will have freedom of movement (although he won't have a passport). There are a number of other conditions under which he can be detained, such as enemy combatant. -
Ukraine war: Russia's Wagner Group commander requests Norway asylum

As a general rule, deserting the military, or avoiding the draft are not grounds for refugee status under UN regulations. That doesn't mean countries can't grant some other type of consideration -- humanitarian visa, etc.. Each country has the right to decide what rules under which they will allow someone to stay in the country. The question is, is the Wagner group actually officially part of the military? -
A former commander with the Russian paramilitary Wagner Group has claimed asylum in Norway after deserting from the mercenary outfit. Andrey Medvedev, 26, crossed the border into Norway last Friday, where he was detained by border guards. He is currently being held in the Oslo area where he faces charges of illegal entry to Norway, his lawyer Brynjulf Risnes told the BBC. https://www.bbc.com/news/world-europe-64296979

Donald Trump needs to be investigated over the payments he received to host the Saudi Arabia-backed LIV Golf tour at his resorts, according to an organization set up by supporters of murdered journalist Jamal Khashoggi. The Democracy for the Arab World Now [DAWN] group has called in the Department of Justice and Congress to look further into the "disturbing facts and circumstances" surrounding the controversial golf tour and its ties to the former president after new details on its funding were revealed as part of an ongoing lawsuit filed by the PGA against LIV Golf. On January 13, it was revealed during court proceedings that the Saudi Arabia Public Investment Fund [PIF], a sovereign wealth fund headed by the country's Crown Prince, Mohammed bin Salman [MBS], owns 93 percent of LIV and pays 100 percent of the costs associated with its events. https://www.google.com/search?client=firefox-b-1-d&q=Photo+of+golf#imgrc=7wfoFxXFICQz8M

Protesters described Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's proposed changes as an attack on democratic rule. https://www.bbc.com/news/world-middle-east-64279349

The execution of British-Iranian man Alireza Akbari, who had been sentenced to death, has been widely condemned. Also of interest: Newport News: What happens to a six-year-old who shoots someone? This time, a six-year-old student allegedly shot his teacher with a handgun at a Virginia elementary school, in what police described as an "intentional" shooting. The alleged perpetrator's young age has added a gut-punch twist to an already tragic scenario. The case has forced local leaders, police, and gun violence experts to confront a horrific question: What happens when a first grader shoots someone? https://www.bbc.com/news/world-us-canada-64218521 -
A staff member at the Virginia school where a six-year-old boy allegedly shot his teacher last week had been alerted before the shooting that the child might have a weapon, an official said. The boy's bag was searched, but no weapon was found, Richneck Elementary school superintendent George Parker told parents. First-grade teacher Abigail Zwerner was left with serious injuries after police say the boy shot her "intentionally". https://www.bbc.com/news/world-us-canada-64252261

Pressure is mounting on President Joe Biden to give further details about the classified documents found at his Delaware home and a Washington office he once used. An independent lawyer, or special counsel, has been appointed by the justice department to investigate whether these papers were mishandled. There are still more questions than answers about the files. Here's a look at some of the things we still don't know. https://www.bbc.com/news/world-us-canada-64267983

The Treasury Department said Friday the US could default on its debt as soon as June, setting up one of the first major battles on Capitol Hill after Republicans took control of the House. The US will reach the debt limit on January 19 and then “extraordinary measures” will need to be taken, Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen wrote in a letter to House Speaker Kevin McCarthy. She said that the Treasury Department will pursue those measures, but they will only last a limited amount of time. https://www.cnn.com/2023/01/13/politics/debt-limit-janet-yellen-letter-to-kevin-mccarthy/index.html
