President Vladimir Putin said on Monday that Russia was suspending but “not ending” its participation in the vital Black Sea grain export deal with Ukraine. Russia’s decision came after “the creation of a threat” to the humanitarian corridor, Putin said at a news conference following meetings with the leaders of Armenia and Azerbaijan in the southern Russian city of Sochi. Russia on Saturday announced that it was suspending its involvement in the UN-brokered agreement viewed as key to addressing the global food shortage. https://www.cnn.com/europe/live-news/russia-ukraine-war-news-10-31-22/index.html

Sao Paulo CNN — Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva has been elected the next president of Brazil, in a stunning comeback following a tight run-off race on Sunday. His victory heralds a political about-face for Latin America’s largest country, after four years of Jair Bolsonaro’s far-right administration. The 76-year-old politician’s win represents the return of the left into power in Brazil, and concludes a triumphant personal comeback for Lula da Silva, after a series of corruption allegations lead to his imprisonment for 580 days. The sentences were later annulled by the Supreme Court, clearing his path to run for reelection. Lula da Silva, who is expected to take office on January 1, will take the reins of a country plagued by gross inequality that is still struggling to recover from the Covid-19 pandemic. https://www.cnn.com/2022/10/30/americas/brazil-election-lula-da-silva-wins-intl/index.html

At least 59 dead, 150 injured in Seoul Halloween crowd crush

Very scary. I was in HK in 1993 when on New Year's Eve there was a similar type stampede in Lan Kwai Fong. A group of us had gone there for the festivities. The crowd was so large and it was packed so tight that I decided to head home. Somehow, being unable to move didn't seem like a good time. IIRC, around 20 people died. None of my friends were injured, thank goodness. -

Steve Bannon associate Timothy Shea was convicted by a New York City jury on Friday for defrauding thousands of donors in the “We Build the Wall” fundraising scam. Shea, 51, was found guilty of conspiracy and obstruction of justice in Manhattan Federal Court. This was his second trial. The first one ended in a mistrial in April when a juror refused to convict him, citing a government “witch hunt.” https://finance.yahoo.com/news/steve-bannon-associate-convicted-build-223300140.html

St. Louis school shooter was flagged in FBI background check but was still able to legally purchase a gun, police say The gunman who killed two people and wounded several others in a school shooting in St. Louis, Missouri, on Monday was flagged by an FBI background check but was still able to purchase the AR-15-style rifle he used in the attack from a private seller, police said. When 19-year-old Orlando Harris first tried to purchase a gun from a licensed dealer, the background check blocked the sale, St. Louis Metropolitan Police Sgt. Charles Wall said Thursday. But Harris could still legally buy the rifle from a private individual who had bought the firearm from a licensed dealer in 2020, Wall said. https://www.cnn.com/2022/10/28/us/st-louis-school-shooting-friday/index.html

One of the Justice Department's most experienced national security prosecutors is joining the team investigating the storing of classified documents at Donald Trump's Mar-a-Lago resort, The Washington Post reports. National security law experts speaking to The Post say prosecutors "appear to have amassed evidence in the case that would meet some of the criteria for bringing charges against the former president — an unprecedented action that they said likely would only happen if the Justice Department believes it has an extremely strong case." David Raskin worked on the case of Zacarias Moussaoui, who was tried in Virginia as a co-conspirator in the 9/11 terrorist attacks that killed almost 3,000 people. He was also part of the team that prosecuted Ahmed Ghailani in federal court in Manhattan in connection with the 1998 bombings of U.S. embassies in East Africa. https://www.rawstory.com/trump-investigation-2658566075/

Jerry Lee Lewis, the untamable rock ‘n’ roll pioneer whose outrageous talent, energy and ego collided on such definitive records as “Great Balls of Fire” and “Whole Lotta Shakin' Goin' On" and sustained a career otherwise upended by personal scandal, died Friday morning at 87. The last survivor of a generation of groundbreaking performers that included Elvis Presley, Chuck Berry and Little Richard, Lewis died at home in Memphis, Tennessee, representative Zach Farnum said in a release. Of all the rock rebels to emerge in the 1950s, few captured the new genre's attraction and danger as unforgettably as the Louisiana-born piano player who called himself “The Killer." https://www.yahoo.com/news/jerry-lee-lewis-outrageous-rock-165214217.html
