  2. DETROIT (AP) — The FBI has arrested two alleged members of the far-right anti-government group the Boogaloo Boys, with authorities increasingly concerned about the potential for violence in the leadup to next week’s midterm elections. Timothy Teagan appeared Wednesday in federal court in Detroit on charges of being a drug user in possession of firearms and ammunition, and giving a false statement in connection with the acquisition of a firearm, according to an unsealed federal complaint. Meanwhile, the FBI said in a criminal complaint filed Monday that there was enough evidence to charge Aron McKillips, of Sandusky, Ohio, with illegal possession of a machine gun and the interstate communication of threats. https://www.pbs.org/newshour/politics/2-alleged-boogaloo-boys-members-arrested-in-michigan-and-ohio

  4. WASHINGTON, Nov 3 (Reuters) - The number of Americans filing new claims for unemployment benefits unexpectedly fell last week, suggesting the labor market remains strong despite slowing domestic demand amid stiff interest rate hikes from the Federal Reserve to tame inflation. The weekly unemployment claims report from the Labor Department on Thursday, the most timely data on the economy's health, followed on the heels of news this week of an unexpected jump in job openings in September. Labor market resilience gives the Fed cover to continue tightening monetary policy, and also keeps the economy growing for now. https://www.reuters.com/world/us/us-labor-market-unwavering-despite-stiff-interest-rates-hikes-2022-11-03/

  7. LONDON, Nov 2 (Reuters) - The pound has just staged its biggest monthly rally in a year after shaking off weeks of British political turmoil, but this strength is likely only to be fleeting as investors return their focus to the stagnating economy and the Bank of England. The pound crashed to a record low against the dollar of $1.0327 in late September after the government announced plans to slash taxes and ramp up borrowing. Yet it had its best month since mid-2021 in October to trade around $1.15 after the BoE intervened to stem the market chaos, new finance minister Jeremy Hunt scrapped the budget plans, and Liz Truss resigned as prime minister. https://www.reuters.com/world/uk/storm-clouds-gather-over-pound-focus-turns-back-dire-economy-2022-11-02/
  8. The cost of Russia's military mobilisation and the impact of Western sanctions are set to blow a hole in the government's budget forecasts and drain Moscow's reserves to their lowest level in years, according to analysts' latest calculations. That will put an ever greater strain on the Kremlin's resources as President Vladimir Putin seeks to fund a conflict with no end in sight and prepares for a possible re-election bid in 2024. After eight months of what it calls a "special military operation", Moscow has drawn up a 2023 budget that takes no account of the cost of the recent call-up of 300,000 reservists, the declared annexation of four Ukrainian regions - the Kremlin says the four joined Russia freely - and Western efforts to cap Russian energy export prices, analysts say. https://www.reuters.com/world/europe/ukraine-conflict-sanctions-set-blow-hole-russias-finances-2022-11-02/
  9. SAO PAULO/RIO DE JANEIRO, Nov 2 (Reuters) - Supporters of Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro on Wednesday held rallies to call for an armed forces intervention following the election of Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva, a move that military experts say is out of the question. The country's electoral authority on Sunday said Lula won almost 51% of the vote. Bolsonaro has not officially acknowledged the result, though his cabinet has initiated a transition, with Lula set to take over the presidency on Jan. 1. Bolsonaro's supporters in Sao Paulo and Rio de Janeiro led festive rallies on Wednesday, carrying Brazil's yellow-and-green flag draped over their shoulders, blowing horns and chanting anti-Lula slogans. https://www.reuters.com/world/americas/bolsonaro-backers-call-brazil-military-intervene-after-lula-victory-2022-11-02/
  10. Fed delivers big rate hike, signals possible smaller increases ahead WASHINGTON, Nov 2 (Reuters) - The Federal Reserve on Wednesday raised interest rates by three-quarters of a percentage point as it continued to battle the worst outbreak of inflation in 40 years, but signaled future increases in borrowing costs could be made in smaller steps to account for the "cumulative tightening of monetary policy" it has enacted so far. Fed Chair Jerome Powell said that change in pace could come as soon as the central bank's next meeting in December, but he also cautioned that there remains extensive uncertainty about how high rates will need to go and they could well end up being higher than policymakers had estimated at their last meeting in September. The time to reassess the pace of increases "is coming," Powell said at his press conference following the decision by the policy-setting Federal Open Market Committee (FOMC) to increase rates by a three-quarter point margin for a fourth straight meeting. https://www.reuters.com/markets/us/fed-set-another-big-rate-hike-may-tamp-down-future-tightening-2022-11-02/
  11. A lawyer for former President Donald Trump described Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas as “key” to Trump’s plan to delay Congress’ certification of President Joe Biden’s victory through litigation after the 2020 election, according to emails recently turned over to the House select committee investigating January 6. “We want to frame things so that Thomas could be the one to issue” a temporary order putting Georgia’s results in doubt, Trump attorney Kenneth Chesebro wrote in a December 31, 2020, email, adding that a favorable order from Thomas was their “only chance” to hold up Congress from counting electoral votes for Biden from Georgia. John Eastman, another attorney for Trump, responded to that email saying he agreed with the plan. https://www.cnn.com/2022/11/02/politics/clarence-thomas-trump-eastman-emails/index.html
  12. The Federal Reserve raised its benchmark interest rate for the sixth time in a row on Wednesday, to a range of 3.75% to 4%. While there may be plenty of downside in the form of higher borrowing costs for consumers, one positive outcome is that your savings may actually start earning a little money after years of barely-there interest. “Interest rates have increased at the fastest pace in 40 years,” said Greg McBride, chief financial analyst at Bankrate.com. “Mortgage rates have rocketed to 20-year highs, home equity lines of credit are the highest in 14 years, and car loan rates are at 11-year highs. https://www.cnn.com/2022/11/02/success/what-rising-interest-rates-mean-credit-mortgage/index.html
  13. JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. — Missouri's health department is investigating whether a hospital violated federal health care rules in denying a woman an emergency abortion, an agency spokeswoman confirmed Monday. Missouri Health and Senior Services spokeswoman Lisa Cox in a statement said the agency launched an investigation into southern Missouri's Freeman Health System's treatment of Mylissa Farmer. Farmer, who is from Joplin, told The Associated Press that she went to the system's local emergency room when her water broke months early on Aug. 2. She said tests showed that she had lost all of her amniotic fluid because of a pregnancy complication and doctors told her the fetus was not expected to survive. https://www.ksdk.com/article/news/local/missouri-investigates-hospital-denial-of-emergency-abortion/63-6d3ca2c9-15bd-4e3a-a2b9-6b6c3b213833

  15. Capitol Police had a camera feed of Pelosi's home during attack, but no one was monitoring it WASHINGTON — U.S. Capitol Police had a camera feed showing the outside of House Speaker Nancy Pelosi's, D-Calif., home in San Francisco during the attack on her husband Friday, but no one was monitoring it at the time, two sources familiar with the situation said. The camera is one of about 1,800 at the Capitol complex and around the country that the Capitol Police have the ability to monitor. The Washington Post first reported no one was actively watching the camera feed when the break-in occurred early Friday morning. Pelosi's home is monitored full time when she is there, however. “She is the mission,” one of the sources told NBC News. https://www.nbcnews.com/politics/congress/capitol-police-camera-feed-pelosis-home-attack-no-one-was-monitoring-rcna55213

  17. Image source, EPA By Shayan Sardarizadeh BBC Monitoring Paul Pelosi, the husband of US House of Representatives Speaker Nancy Pelosi, was attacked by a hammer-wielding intruder at the couple's San Francisco home in the early hours of Friday. Within hours of the attack, a series of unsubstantiated claims began circulating in fringe far-right circles that contradicted the official police account of how the attack unfolded. Those misleading claims have since gone viral after being amplified by new Twitter chief Elon Musk and a number of conservative influencers. https://www.bbc.com/news/63477452
  18. Former Israeli leader Benjamin Netanyahu may scrape a narrow majority, initial election exit polls suggested Tuesday. If exit polls are correct – a big if – Netanyahu and his political allies appear to be on pace to win a narrow majority of seats in the Knesset, Israel’s parliament. First exit polls from the country’s three main broadcasters suggested Netanyahu’s block was poised to take 61 or 62 of the parliament’s 120 seats. https://edition.cnn.com/2022/11/01/middleeast/israel-election-intl/index.html

Lindsey Graham to testify in front of an Atlanta special grand jury investigating efforts to overturn the 2020 presidential election in Georgia. There were no public dissents from the order. 21. ‘Absolutely no evidence:’ Police, FBI affidavit debunk salacious conspiracy about Pelosi attack pushed by conservatives Prominent figures on social media, including some of the loudest voices on the political right, are pushing a salacious and false conspiracy theory about the attack on House Speaker Nancy Pelosi’s husband, in an apparent attempt to shift the narrative about the assault. The claim that big names like Elon Musk, Donald Trump, Jr., and Dinesh D’Souza have promoted to millions of their followers: Paul Pelosi and the man who attacked him were gay lovers who had gotten into a fight. The spurious theory traces back to an incorrect early news report and a handful of pieces of evidence that its proponents have spun wildly out of context. https://www.cnn.com/2022/10/31/politics/pelosi-attack-right-wing-conspiracy-theories-invs/index.html
  22. It's 157 years since the US constitution banned chattel slavery - in which one person is the legal property of another - but left in place an exemption for convicted prisoners. Throughout most of the US, slavery is still legal as punishment for a crime. But on 8 November, voters in five states - Alabama, Louisiana, Oregon, Tennessee and Vermont - will decide whether to remove these exemptions from their state constitutions in an effort to ban slavery entirely https://www.bbc.com/news/world-us-canada-63338784
  23. President Joe Biden and his Republican opponents have traded accusations over the handling of the US economy under his administration. With inflation rising and stock markets on a downward trend for most of this year, Republicans have talked of "Joe Biden's recession". Mr Biden has countered that there's been good job growth and low unemployment, and says the economy is "as strong as hell". https://www.bbc.com/news/59402975
  24. More than 12 hours after Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva was pronounced the winner of Brazil’s 2022 presidential election, incumbent Jair Bolsonaro has yet to publicly acknowledge his loss. The President’s delay in conceding the race has contributed to fears that Bolsonaro will not cooperate with a transfer of power. In the lead-up to Sunday’s run-off vote, Bolsonaro and some of his allies had made unfounded claims about electoral fraud and unfair treatment by the press. Some of Bolsonaro’s supporters are still waiting to hear from him; truck drivers blocked major arteries and highways in at least 12 Brazilian states on Monday, claiming that the race was too close and that they wanted to hear from Bolsonaro, according to CNN Brasil. https://www.cnn.com/2022/10/31/americas/brazil-election-result-explainer-intl-latam/index.html
