After a big surge in the middle of the 20th Century, population growth is already slowing down. It could take 15 years to reach nine billion and the UN doesn't expect to reach 10 billion until 2080. https://www.bbc.com/news/world-63623307

SAN JUAN, Puerto Rico (AP) — José Irizarry accepts that he’s known as the most corrupt agent in U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration history, admitting he “became another man” in conspiring with Colombian cartels to build a lavish lifestyle of expensive sportscars, Tiffany jewels and paramours around the world. But as he used his final hours of freedom to tell his story to The Associated Press, Irizarry says he won't go down for this alone, accusing some long-trusted DEA colleagues of joining him in skimming millions of dollars from drug money laundering stings to fund a decade’s worth of luxury overseas travel, fine dining, top seats at sporting events and frat house-style debauchery. https://news.yahoo.com/dea-most-corrupt-agent-parties-134305720.html

In the early 2020 days of the pandemic, when most of the world was desperately implementing lockdowns and trying to limit the damage, one country stood out. Unlike its peers, Sweden didn’t want to lock down, and it didn’t really want masks and social distancing. Instead, the country championed a different approach that many saw (or wanted to see) as an alternative. The “Swedish model” became hotly debated, with many anti-lockdown advocates citing it as an example. https://www.zmescience.com/other/pieces/remember-the-infamous-swedish-pandemic-model-turns-out-it-really-didnt-work/

Democratic Secretary of State Katie Hobbs has defeated Republican Kari Lake in Arizona's race for governor, NBC News projected Monday. Hobbs' victory is key for Democrats in a presidential battleground and a rebuke to a prominent election denier — though the closeness of the contest left the result up in the air for nearly a week. A record number of early ballots were dropped off on Election Day in Maricopa County, officials said, which had to be processed in a more time-intensive manner that includes signature verification. https://www.nbcnews.com/politics/2022-election/democrat-katie-hobbs-defeats-maga-favorite-kari-lake-high-stakes-race-rcna55172

The UK will pay France £8m more a year under a revised deal to try to stop people crossing the English Channel in small boats. The money will pay for increased surveillance of French beaches, while UK police officers will also be able to observe patrols within France. It is thought French officers patrolling the coast will rise from about 250 to 350 over five months. https://www.bbc.com/news/uk-politics-63615653

The world can breathe a little easier after US President Joe Biden’s talks with Chinese leader Xi Jinping on Monday. But the two 21st century superpowers are still on a collision course. The summit in Indonesia yielded two important outcomes, according to the US: A joint position that Russia must not use a nuclear weapon in Ukraine and an expected resumption of talks on climate between American and Chinese negotiators, a boost for the COP 27 global climate conference in Egypt. https://www.cnn.com/2022/11/14/politics/joe-biden-xi-jinping-china-us-relations/index.html

Police have in custody a University of Virginia student and ex-UVA football player suspected of fatally shooting three current players and wounding two other people late Sunday at the school’s main campus in Charlottesville as a bus returned from a class field trip, school officials said. The suspect, Christopher Darnell Jones Jr., faces three charges of second-degree murder and three counts of using a handgun in the commission of a felony, UVA Police Chief Timothy Longo Sr. told reporters Monday morning as an hourslong manhunt came to an end and authorities lifted a campus lockdown order. Jones was arrested without incident around 11 a.m. ET about 80 miles east of Charlottesville in Henrico County, the county police agency said in a statement. https://www.cnn.com/2022/11/13/us/university-of-virginia-shooting/index.html

A federal judge on Thursday excoriated and sanctioned several members of Donald Trump’s legal team, saying the former president’s massive lawsuit against his former rival, Hillary Clinton, and dozens of other adversaries amounted to an intentional abuse of the legal system. “These were political grievances masquerading as legal claims,” said U.S. District Court Judge Donald Middlebrooks, a Florida-based jurist who dismissed Trump’s lawsuit in September. “This cannot be attributed to incompetent lawyering. It was a deliberate use of the judicial system to pursue a political agenda.” https://www.politico.com/news/2022/11/10/trump-lawyers-clinton-lawsuit-00066381

Elon Musk Picks a Fight With the Wrong Senator If Twitter’s new owner Elon Musk is going to antagonize U.S. senators, he might want to think twice about taunting Sen. Ed Markey (D-Mass.), who sits on numerous subcommittees with oversight into his companies. After a Washington Post reporter was able to create a verified Twitter account impersonating Markey on Saturday, the senator wrote a letter to Musk demanding an explanation. “Selling the truth is dangerous and unacceptable. https://www.rollingstone.com/politics/politics-news/elon-musk-ed-markey-twitter-verification-1234630165/?fbclid=IwAR2N7pHPN5rCV7vyqvxTGUNv0wlKUA_aqF3rFkIZnwnEYBuTVn8GZhU9Y0A

Australian regional airline Northern Territory Air Service (NTAS) has ordered 20 electric planes from manufacturer Eviation, and they are far from the only customer. Looking back only five years ago, the thought of electric commercial planes was laughable. Commercial jets use enormous amounts of energy just to keep them at cruising altitude, and they are often the choice of travel for trips spanning hundreds or thousands of miles. https://www.teslarati.com/electric-plane-manufacturer-takes-off-worldwide-orders/

Former President Donald Trump's midterm failures may have eroded the Republican support he was counting on to avoid a criminal conviction, according to one attorney. Trump has long been reported to be planning an early 2024 presidential campaign announcement as a way to stave off potential prosecution from the numerous investigations mounting against him. His hope had purportedly been to ride a wave of midterm GOP success into the announcement, but with Democrats posting historically strong results over the last week, Trump's future as a Republican figurehead and his 2024 candidacy have been cast into doubt. https://www.newsweek.com/many-republicans-want-trump-convicted-out-their-way-attorney-1759153

Tesla and CEO Elon Musk will spend this week in court to defend the massive compensation package that helped make him the world’s richest man. The week-long trial in Delaware Court of Chancery will examine the 2018 compensation plan that the automaker’s board of directors created for Musk.
