  2. A campaign staffer for Arizona Republican gubernatorial candidate Kari Lake once admitted to participating in a murder-for-hire plot against an FBI informant who was part of a heroin distribution case, according to reports. Kenneth Ulibarri was hired by the Lake campaign to oversee Latino engagement, spokespeople for the candidate confirmed to Raw Story on Tuesday. It’s not clear if the campaign knew of Ulibarri’s past criminal record at the time of his hiring, and a spokesperson for Lake has not yet responded to a request for comment by the Washington Examiner. The Justice Department charged Ulibarri in 2014 for allegedly attempting to murder an FBI informant to prevent the agent from testifying at a trial that accused Ulibarri and several others of cocaine distribution and money laundering. Ulibarri was also charged with distributing heroin, according to the DOJ. https://www.washingtonexaminer.com/news/campaigns/kari-lake-staffer-once-pleaded-guilty-murder-for-hire-against-fbi-informant
  3. Ian roared ashore on the South Carolina coast Friday afternoon as a Category 1 hurricane with maximum sustained winds of 85 mph, thrashing the Palmetto State with dangerous storm surge, high winds and flooding rainfall. AccuWeather meteorologists warned that despite being rated lower on the Saffir-Simpson Hurricane Wind Scale than when it slammed into Florida with deadly consequence, Ian will still pack a punch and unleash life-threatening impacts as it pushes inland into Friday night. Hurricane-force winds extended outward from Ian’s center to 70 miles out and its tropical-storm-force winds reached as far as 485 miles out from the center, mainly to the north of the center. Satellites showed that Ian’s cloud shield stretched as far away as Pennsylvania and New England. https://www.accuweather.com/en/hurricane/hurricane-ian-crashes-ashore-in-south-carolina-with-3rd-us-landfall/1255364

  5. President Joe Biden once called himself a “gaffe machine” – and his latest slip-up is a whopper. Speaking at the White House Conference on Hunger, Nutrition, and Health on Wednesday, Biden tried to acknowledge the presence of Rep. Jackie Walorski – despite the fact that the Indiana Republican had died in a car accident in early August. “Jackie, are you here? Where’s Jackie? https://www.cnn.com/2022/09/28/politics/joe-biden-jackie-walorski-comment-analysis/index.html
  6. The number of new applications for unemployment benefits dropped by 16,000 to 193,000 last week, the lowest in five months, the Labor Department reported Thursday. Falling jobless claims, a proxy for layoffs, is a sign the economy is still adding jobs despite the Federal Reserve’s efforts to tighten monetary policy to slow economywide spending and bring down inflation. The number of new claims for unemployment isn’t near where it was during most of the pandemic and has not risen to a rate that would suggest an imminent recession. https://www.washingtonexaminer.com/policy/economy/jobless-claims-five-month-low
  7. Queen Elizabeth II died of "old age", according to her death certificate, which has been released by the National Records of Scotland. The certificate records the Queen died at 15:10 on 8 September in Balmoral Castle, at the age of 96. Princess Anne is recorded as the person providing the information about the Queen's death. For "occupation" of the deceased, the official form says: "Her Majesty the Queen." https://www.bbc.com/news/uk-63078676
  8. What a difference a hurricane makes. Just a week ago, Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis, a possible 2024 contender, trolled the country with the idea that he would fly migrants in Texas to Delaware near the home of President Biden. Biden, in a speech rallying congressional Democrats a few days earlier, derided the Republican governor’s migrant expulsions as “playing politics with humans, using them as props.” Now the potential 2024 opponents are talking multiple times a day as they face the stunning devastation from Hurricane Ian, a deadly storm that left 2.5 million Floridians without power and inflicted damage that DeSantis described as “historic.” https://www.yahoo.com/news/biden-de-santis-strike-ceasefire-as-catastrophic-ian-rocks-florida-202557679.html
  9. Washington CNN Business — The United States has soundly defeated Russia in an election to control a United Nations body responsible for shaping global internet development, a contest viewed as geopolitically symbolic amid wider US-Russia tensions and an answer to fears of growing censorship online by authoritarian regimes. On Thursday, members of the International Telecommunication Union voted to appoint Doreen Bogdan-Martin, the US-backed candidate, as the group’s secretary general. Bogdan-Martin, a nearly 30-year veteran of the ITU born in New Jersey, beat out her chief rival Rashid Ismailov by winning 139 votes out of 172. Ismailov won just 25 votes. Bogdan-Martin will be the first woman ever to lead the ITU. https://www.cnn.com/2022/09/29/tech/us-russia-internet-future/index.html

  13. Although I agree with you, there are always situations which make it almost impossible to get out. I am reminded of a young lady in a different country and some years ago who was pregnant. She was facing a particularly problematic pregnancy and due to her medical problems was not allowed to leave. I've also known other situations which made it almost impossible for people to leave. The human condition is always in play.

  15. http://www.joeyl.com/uploads/onset/Joey_L_Photographer_Self_Portrait_Syria.jpg KOYA, Iraq -- An Iranian drone bombing campaign targeting the bases of an Iranian-Kurdish opposition group in northern Iraq on Wednesday killed at least nine people and wounded 32 others, the Kurdish Regional Government’s Health Ministry said. The strikes took place as demonstrations continued to engulf the Islamic Republic after the death of Mahsa Amini, a 22-year-old Iranian Kurdish woman who was detained by the Iranian morality police. Iran’s attacks targeted Koya, some 65 kilometers (35 miles) east of Irbil, said Soran Nuri, a member of the Democratic Party of Iranian Kurdistan. https://abcnews.go.com/International/wireStory/calls-iran-avoid-unnecessary-force-protesters-90621124

  17. The U.S. Embassy in Russia is urging Americans in the country to leave and warning U.S. citizens to not travel to Russia after Russian President Vladimir Putin ordered a call-up of 300,000 reservists to aid depleted forces in Ukraine. The embassy said in a security alert on Wednesday that Russia may prevent U.S. citizens from leaving the country and conscript dual nationals into military service. Russia may also refuse to acknowledge dual nationals’ U.S. citizenship or restrict their access to U.S. consular assistance, officials said. https://thehill.com/policy/international/3664533-us-embassy-in-russia-tells-americans-to-leave-the-country/
  18. The EU has said leaks in two major gas pipelines from Russia to Europe were caused by sabotage - but stopped short of directly accusing Russia. European Commission head Ursula von der Leyen said deliberate disruption would meet the "strongest possible response". The EU has previously accused Russia of using gas supplies as a weapon against the West over its support for Ukraine. https://www.bbc.com/news/world-europe-63057966

  20. Liverpool, England CNN — Liz Truss’s first few weeks as British prime minister have been defined by crisis. She’d barely been in the job 48 hours when news broke that Queen Elizabeth II had died, placing the country in a state of official mourning and delaying the official launch of the Truss plan for Britain. Once that official mourning period was over last Monday, her government unleashed a wave of radical policies, climaxing on Friday with the announcement of £45 billion ($48 billion) in tax cuts. The measures included scrapping the top rate paid by the highest earners, in adjustments that will benefit the rich far more than millions of people on lower incomes. https://www.cnn.com/2022/09/28/europe/uk-truss-crisis-labour-starmer-gbr-intl-cmd/index.html
