New York City declares state of emergency over migrant 'crisis situation'
Scott replied to Scott's topic in World News
About 1/3 of the encounters at the Southern Border are coming from Cuba, Nicaragua and Venezuela. Under the existing agreements with Mexico, they will allow only those from specific Central American countries to remain in Mexico awaiting their immigration hearing. Once these nationals present themselves at the border, they cannot return to Mexico and deportation is extremely difficult if not impossible because of the political situation in their home country and the lack of agreements between the US and those countries. I believe that the US has gotten Mexico to no longer allow Venezuelan's to enter Mexico without a visa. Up until recently, they could enter Mexico unrestricted. I don't know the situation with Cuba and Nicaragua. -
New York City Mayor Eric Adams has declared a state of emergency to address a "crisis situation" over an influx of migrants. More than 17,000 have arrived in the city from the southern border since April. Republican states like Texas and Florida have been sending migrants to Democratic areas in recent months. https://www.bbc.com/news/world-us-canada-63177892

President Joe Biden’s stark warning Thursday night that the world faces the highest prospect of nuclear war in 60 years was not based on any new intelligence about Russian President Vladimir Putin’s intentions or changes in Russia’s nuclear posture, multiple US officials told CNN. The US still has seen no evidence that Putin is moving toward using Russia’s nuclear capability, nor is there any intelligence showing he’s decided to do so. But Biden’s comments – laid out in starker terms than other US officials have used to date – reflected heightened concerns inside his administration about the risk of Russia carrying out a nuclear strike in Ukraine, where Russian forces have recently faced a string of defeats. https://www.cnn.com/2022/10/07/politics/joe-biden-nuclear-weapons-russia-vladimir-putin/index.html

Because countries have agreements allowing for free passage of citizens and do not routinely check passports does not mean they can't check and it does not mean that people who are not citizens of an EU country have the right to travel. If they could be returned to France, don't you think this would have been done during the time that the UK was in the EU? Loading people on boats still does not relieve a country of following it's own laws. If they are on a British ship in British waters they are subject to British law. If they are put on a British island, they are still under British law. If they are sent to a 3rd country, it is by agreement, but that solution tends to run afoul of international agreements.

Once an immigrant leaves France and heads to the UK, it's almost impossible to return them to France. You cannot force a country to accept someone who is not a national of that country. Repatriation needs to be to the country of orgin unless some other agreement is in place.

At least 20 people killed in mass shooting in Thailand: Police

There is no exact definition, but in the US the Congressional Research Services defines it as 4 or more people shot at one or more locations. I suspect the adults were shot and his wife and child and himself, so it would qualify as a mass shooting under that definition. -

British households could lose power for up to three hours at a time this winter if gas supplies run extremely low, National Grid has warned. The company said it was an "unlikely" scenario but added that supply interruptions were a possibility if the energy crisis escalated. Cuts would probably occur at peak times and customers would be warned in advance. https://www.bbc.com/news/business-63155827

Jeremy Bertino, a top lieutenant to Proud Boys leader Enrique Tarrio, pleaded guilty to seditious conspiracy in federal court on Thursday, and is cooperating with the Justice Department’s investigation into the far-right extremist group. Bertino, 43, also pleaded guilty to unlawful possession of a firearm by a prohibited person. He is the first member of the Proud Boys to plead guilty to seditious conspiracy – a major boost to the historic prosecution of the organization. He could spend more than five years in prison, according to his plea agreement, which was read aloud in court, though prosecutors could ask a judge for a lesser sentence depending on his level of cooperation with the investigation. https://www.cnn.com/2022/10/06/politics/proud-boys-bertino-seditious-conspiracy-guilty-plea/index.html

President Joe Biden is taking his first major steps toward decriminalizing marijuana, fulfilling a campaign pledge to erase prior federal possession convictions and beginning the process of potentially loosening federal classification of the drug. Biden on Thursday pardoned all prior federal offenses of simple marijuana possession, a move that senior administration officials said would affect thousands of Americans charged with that crime. The announcement comes a month ahead of critical November elections that will determine control of Congress. https://www.cnn.com/2022/10/06/politics/marijuana-decriminalization-white-house-joe-biden/index.html

While Ukraine’s military has been successfully chasing Russian troops out of one territory after another, Vladimir Putin’s foot soldiers have apparently been turning their weapons on each other as the Russian leader’s “special military operation” continues to come apart at the seams in spectacular fashion. The Kremlin’s flailing bid to get an edge on the battlefield by deploying mercenaries from the Wagner Group—which now includes hundreds of prison inmates—has reportedly backfired as the private military force butts heads with the Russian military. The growing conflict resulted in a Wagner fighter gunning down a lieutenant colonel in the Russian army—a deadly episode of “friendly fire” that the Kremlin is said to be trying to sweep under the rug, according to the human rights group Gulagu.net. https://www.yahoo.com/news/putin-dueling-foot-soldiers-now-155912351.html

WASHINGTON — U.S. intelligence agencies believe parts of the Ukrainian government authorized the car bomb attack near Moscow in August that killed Daria Dugina, daughter of a prominent Russian nationalist, an element of a covert campaign that U.S. officials fear could widen the conflict. The United States took no part in the attack, either by providing intelligence or other assistance, officials said. U.S. officials also said they were not aware of the operation ahead of time and would have opposed the killing had they been consulted. https://news.yahoo.com/u-believes-ukrainians-were-behind-184556126.html
