What you describe has been working well for thousands of Aussie expats, for decades, and I am one of them also. You derive an income in Australia, but live overseas. The government has been missing out on taxing us at non-resident rates. This is the reason the proposed changes were drafted. -

Troll. -
The work around is no longer working with some of these streaming apps. The apps now come up with an error message that the Android device is "jail broken or rooted." I couldn't get it working. I have yet to try the Magisk app to get around this. I have read some have used it with success, whilst others have had no success with it. Have other members come across this error?

Jim, as well as the previous government, has been giving thought to ALL expats that have escaped paying non resident tax for decades, and why wouldn't he / they? We have all been avoiding this tax for years. Carry on. -

What planet are you on? I want to be a resident of Australia for tax purposes, and I suggest, so do the majority of Aussie expat retirees. Have you learnt nothing? If you are deemed to be a non resident for tax purposes, there's no tax free threshold and the rate is 32.5% from $0 to $120,000. Links already provided. Most, including myself, want to remain a tax resident of Australia so we can get the tax free threshold and resident tax rates. -

Yet, a "slap in the face" for struggling Aussies. https://www.news.com.au/finance/economy/australian-economy/jim-chalmers-to-reveal-better-than-expected-end-of-financial-year-budget-position/news-story/e698e354a0fbd9ca763c9fb5b3ad3d5d I wonder how happy Jim, and struggling pensioners in Australia would be, knowing pensioners living overseas in more affordable countries are benefiting for rises in the pension and cost of living relief? It seems to me, finally being able to collect non resident tax from expats would be an easy sell back there at the moment. -

Why is that relevant when most members on this thread are living in Thailand? -

Are you stating the old age pension is not taxable if it is your only source of income, even if you are living overseas full time, with no domicile in Australia, and no intention of returning to Australia? -

scorecard, this post, like many other of yours, goes beyond misleading and inaccurate to just plain wrong. This would usually result in me posting a link, a link I would have posted numerous times before, which results in members reporting me for posting the same link many times. I have posted many links showing the pension is deemed an income and is therefore taxable. I will not post them again for the reason given above. I see other members have corrected you. If you don't believe me then believe them, but stop posting wrong information that has been debunked time and time again with credible links. -

So why bother posting then? The OP requires a device/s to perform a function. If you don't, so what? -

Under the current outdated laws, no. When the proposed changes come in, yes, or return to Australia for 45 days or possibly more, each financial year. -

Not many votes been cast as yet, but 60% are self funded and paying resident tax, or under the tax free threshold. I am in this group also. How do people in this group propose to continue to be residents for tax purposes if they haven't been back to Australia for years, given the new laws discussed in the other thread? -

Access to CCTV, pulling or pushing files to a NAS, video doorbells, and connecting to a VPN at location A to get around geo-blocking, to name a few. One would need to know if none of the above are working due to an internet or network device issue, or a power outage. -

Any model numbers or links? A cheap timer will reboot the internet on the schedule you set, but it can not detect internet freezes. WifI switches can be turned on / off from anywhere in the world, but not much good when the internet freezes. -
Simple device to monitor the local internet?

I did say there are generic similar devices on the market. These just happen to be the ones I have chosen. They are in my home country taking care of internet freezes, and rebooting my network once a day, and letting me know when there is a power outage there. I have looked at the Sonoff website. They have many devices for sale. Which one are you referring to? -

I think this guy puts to rest some of the debate on this thread, that is, the fact that pensions are an income and taxable, and that pensioners should already be paying non resident tax. All that is left to discuss is what is the government going to do, and when, to be able to start collecting. In my opinion, the proposed changes were designed to make it easier for the government to do so. Thanks for posting. -
Simple device to monitor the local internet?

I am using some devices that covers both the internet and the power. The first is an IP Switch. This thing is awesome. It pings about five of the biggest sites, Google being one of them, but you can add your own sites. If it can't ping all five sites, it reboots one or both power outlets, and I have the modem / router plugged into one of them, so it's as good as an internet freeze and I'm there recycling the router, but this device does it for me. They are highly customizable and you can set them on a schedule. For example, I have it reboot my network once a day at 3am. They have an app where you can reset the power outlets from anywhere, or turn on or off an outlet from anywhere. Should the internet go down for hours, you can set the device to keep rebooting until internet is restored. The device also sends email notifications when the internet is restored , and it keeps logs also. https://5gstore.com/product/8897_5gstore_remote_power_switch_-_2_outlets_-_remote_automation_and_remote_rebooting_-_app_controlled.html To monitor electricity, I use one of these, but you have to pay for a text message every power outage. It sort of monitors the internet also because it's based on their server pinging it and if it can not contact it, the power must be down, but, possibly the internet as well. It's customizable as well, and I have set mine to the maximum to 10 minutes loss of contact because I am only monitoring for power outages and don't have anything plugged into it like a fish tank pump or freezer. https://www.pwron.net.au Both of the above have generic similar devices on the market, but the above are the ones I use. With the IP Switch, you can buy it with power plugs for different countries from the website. I chose the 2 pin plug for Thailand. -

See my reply to another member. An expat who maintains a domicile in Australia may be in a better position than an expat who has not, but with thousands of expats who have not visited Australia in years, domicile or not, how can they possibly argue they are still a resident for tax purposes, in order to escape paying a tax that they should have been paying for years?
