  1. Not the news we want to hear?

In December 2010, the organization that sets global standards for mobile communications, the ITU (International Telecommunication Union), decided that 3G technologies substantially better in performance and capability than earlier 3G technologies could be classified as 4G.

So, if you want good 3G I guess you hope for sh**** 4G HaHaHa. So where does that leave 3G in Thailand? Somewhere around good 2G? Here in North A. most 4G is running around a poor distant cousin of poor 3G. Most communication companies here program their "free 3G" phones and low cost 4G's to do data uplinks constantly to use up all that free band width they include in costly 3 year plans. That way you end up buying bandwidth each month. Guess free isn't and 4G sure isn't 4G so where does that leave 3G in Thailand?

  2. My concern is for manufacture of the phone. Have tried both topics on SG2 no info forth coming. Does anyone have info on Samsung's made in China? I have no issue with legit manufacturing but many clones do come out of this area. If Samsung has farmed out manufacturing to china, all is well and good other then using this phone around the world without software change? The one I have (bought Canada) is manufactured in Korea but the one I would buy for the wife and others have manufactured in china under the battery. My battery says manufactured in Korea, assembled in china but phone is definitly manufactured in Korea. May be a non-issue, if so, put this thread to bed.

  3. I downloaded the DroidSans Thai keyboard and language package with Market on the phone. All thai sites in thai no issues and can sellect both thai and english from the keyboard as you would with Win7 language control for typing.

This is an english phone purchased in Canada, wife is thai and has no issues using it for thai internet, skype, facebook and email.

  4. Don,

As a fisheries/aquatic biologist, I did my research for my thesis relating to fisheries issues and the way we did fish counts and identification, was by electro-fishing....shocking them. Now, mind you we used state-of-the art electro fishing equipment, and legally I might add...as it was through a University and for research. A very small charge stuns, while a strong one will kill them, obviously. However, the larger the fish, the more surface area it has to receive the shock and the more apt they will be the first ones to float up to the top of the water. They will all float up and if left alone, pending the use of a low charge, they will "sleep it off" so to speak and then be on their merry way. The right charge and you only stun them. My brother in law has a battery device he uses to fish with at night but not sure of how regulated, electrically that is, if at all. Perhaps there is some electronics person that might have experience in modifying something for this. I remember tales of long ago, prior to game law enforcement back stateside, where they would "phone them up", using an old crank telephone, which is just a small manual generator. Having been to your place, I see where you would need to fashion a boom of sorts to get the probes out in the middle or deep part of your ponds. And you would need a long handled net or small boat for retrieving the stunned fish. Food for thought. PM me if you have questions about this. ett

Now you didn't hear this from me OK!!! But, a standard door bell transformer with push button, 2 leads out into deep water, push the bell for dinner!!!!!

  5. I had two of those turbines installed for about 5500 including the adapters for the higher pitch. They work great, but will let in more noise--especially if you don't have ceiling insulation.

Agreed, noise is one reason for non-use and the issue of wind, the vent works most when not needed (windy) and least when needed (no wind). Being thailand (sun) solar power is obvious, so maybe solar powered fan vent. I know of 2 types, 20 watt and 30, 12inch and 14 inch. I have never heard one run but would imagine fairly quiet at those low output. They install same as turbines but carry a cost with them above mechanical.

  6. Took the wife and I around 4 hours to get there and yes, many curves with buses going both ways. I happen to meet a tourist van passing a bus on one of those hairpin turns. Wasn't the wife that needed a bathroom break after that!!!!!

  7. With the standard Thai tile roof system, which I really like for looks, venting is quite simple with a ridge cap system at the top and soffits along the underside (to keep birds out). You can get wind powered venting caps installed as well that suck out hot air to increase ventilation. Best place 2 as near the top as possible and on the non viewed side of the house for appearance. Caps are steel.

  8. One issue is manufacture location? Mine is Korea and others China? Is this samsung farming out work to cover demand?

    Mine is Made in China.

Yes large numbers are appearing that are made in China and given this, I assume they are licensed manufactured devices from Samsung, but produced in China to meet demand. I can only guess that the earliest models, released in late June/early July were Korea and demand met by China production. Also the model numbers mentioned here are not the same as Korean made as mine is GT-19100M, Android 2.3.3, build number gingerbread.ugkg2 and is abled for all bands.

Any info on issues with china models, as a friend bought one on EBay would be appreciated.

  9. All the ones made in China are cheap knock offs that will eventually explode or suddenly become animate and kill baby kittens. But seriously i think it has to do with manufacturing cost and/or supply and demand. My phone bought in thailand was made in China but has a korean battery.

I asked on this other thread. what is with some sg made in Korea others made im China?

OK. no issue with made in China if sanctioned by samsung and I'm not a cat lover :) . All use so far in Canada, back home in thai Oct so will unlock and find a 3G server there. Runs like a rocket here, IPhone was no where near this speed. Installed thai language package and keys, works great.

  10. I've heard this phone comes with Swype onscreen keyboard? Is it in Thai as well? How is the Thai input keyboard - easy to use for those that need it?

Mine came with english language but I was able to download thai keyboard and language program for the wife. She finds the keyboard fine, we switch back and forth similar to win7. As for swype, I still can't figure it out in english let alone thai?

  11. One thing that has also come up is, the phone is made in China, not Korea? Now the one I have is Korea, but all the others I have seen are made in China. My battery is made in Korea, assembled in China? The Samsong factory is farming out manufacturing to China to meet demand? Under the battery is where you find "manufactured in".

Anyone have info on this? Are they knockoffs?

  12. Since you want to use either DTAC or True then it seems straightforward, buy the i9100T as this definitely supports 850/1900/2100 Mhz 3G and both DTAC and True operate on 850 Mhz for 3G. If you want to use AIS then buy the i9100 as it supports 900/1900/2100 Mhz 3G and AIS operates their 3G network on 900 Mhz.

This gets to the heart of my question. The S2 is advertised as a 4-band phone, why should I have to commit to using a particular carrier? Or what if I go overseas - it'd be disappointing to not be able to use 3G because of some stupid shenanigans going on in Thailand.

I'd like to buy a version of the phone that runs on all 4 bands but every vendor I've asked has said the same thing, I need to buy the correct version for my carrier. As jackbox said, it doesn't make a lot of sense to be crippling a phone like this :-/

I'm not sure anyone can fully allay your fears? Or satisfy your global requirements? Obviously there are different SGS2's for Korea and Japan, AT&T, Sprint and Verizon.

It's almost moot however, many 3G systems operate on 2100 Mhz so you should be fine in most locales, so just choose the best model for your Thailand requirements. AFAIK, these models are not crippled, and who knows, maybe they are quad band out of the box?

However, since you seem to have narrowed your local provider to True or DTAC then maybe just buy the i9100T as this will work with either/both and stop kvetching.

I now have the galazy II and unlock is simple and will work anywhere you have 3G carrier. I set mine for Bell Canada and DTAC. I have my DTAC simm here and phone recog it no problem after unlock. No dtac here so no function test. Will see when I get back there.

  13. However, there could be constitutional considerations involved, in Thailand and elsewhere - for example, the principle that one should be punished fairly and equally for crimes one commits.

    Ya Think!!!!!!

Maybe consider higher fines for shoplifting for taller people as they can reach more items???

Maybe age consideration? Older people should know better then young? Larger fine?

Only a draconian Society could consider penalties based on postion or status level within a society as a bench mark for law.

  14. If rebar is drilled into the house footing, using epoxy to hold the bars in, then concrete pored, should never pull away from the house (given the slab area/walkway material is compacted properly).

  15. Too bad one did not rupture--the outcome would likely me more humane.

Once in the Rocky Mountains (Western USA) a small plane carrying quite a large amount of cocaine crashed. The pilot was killed upon the crash.

The plane crash was seen, and when a search crew found it there lay a dead 600lb grizzly bear covered with cocaine. It seems that he found the bags, ripped one open and tried to eat it. Wow--that must have been some rush.

Makes one consider the power of coke. The bear ripped open a bag of cocaine? Woulda thought he'd of ripped open the dead pilot.

Now I know what to take with me next hunting trip in Alaska.

My thoughts too, but most likely pilot covered in Coke as well.

When hunting in bear country, ALWAYS hunt with a partner who runs slower then you!!!!

  16. People with visible religious tattoos who engaged in "bad behavior" such as "sitting drinking alcohol and arguing" would damage the faiths through association, Mr Niphit said.

Ummm... don't we always see TONS of Thais everywhere with religious tattoos engaged in various forms of "bad behavior"? Granted, the religious tattoos that Thais get are usually different from the ones that farangs get, such as religious symbols or text scriptures... but still... Double standard here?

Really? Double standard in Thailand between farang and ThaI?? Thai and hill tribe??? Tell me it ain't sooooooo????????????

  17. If you really want good internet there is really no option if you want streaming to getting your own connection.

If you are renting you can still get our own connection with either 3bb or TOT however there is a contract period of a year. You can cancell during this period but it will cost about 4000baht.

I just cancelled my TOT account, 3200 bht, but the funny part was I paid up to and including the 25th of May. This was on the 23rd. Got home, 23rd and it was already off!!!! Try and get that service when you want it on!!! I have no complaint with TOT, good service and fast connection but would have been as cheap just to leave it on for 6 months HaHaHa. They did say I could keep the modem and not pay the reconnect fee when we get back.

  18. Haven't seen any mac, but have never looked. Will keep an eye out. Better to just drain the system, start it and let it run dry before you leave, isn't it?

Yes if nothing else, good plan. Even drained there is residual in carb (even run dry) that can turn to scum and jam needle valve and such. Also father said will run it up each week for me while away so maybe that is best plan without treatment. Maybe he'll finally take it for a burn :whistling:

  19. I can only assume as you noted in post, your lack of paypal knowledge has led you to assume scam and your request for western union has given the buyer a RED flag for a scam. Seems to me you are as noted, stressing out and responding with knee jerk responces. Please consider hiring a broker, this is trouble free and idiot proof, something you seem to need.

When you respond to a buyers questions on graigs, your email is shown to the buyer, best you check that. Paypal exists today, because of scams, not to allow scams. They pride themselves on this, as long as you use common sense.

  20. I don't get why you don't understand. It is a no-brainer. I agree with rmacdon61. A seller requesting payment through Western Union would be a big red flag. The buyer has no recourse whatsoever with that transaction through Western Union. If I saw an advertisement requesting Western Union Payment, it would be screaming SCAM!! at me. No wonder he is reluctant to do this. He has probably reported YOU back to the website. That would be the correct action to take.

Are you totally stupid or what.

    I am the vendor.

he is offering to buy and begging for my details - Paypal or Email ( it is disguised by craigslist )

    Are you with me...................

I suspect SCAM so I play him along and his insistence on using Paypal made me reluctant to co-operate.

My suggestion to Western Union was only a ploy to see his reaction.

It wasn't good so I told him to F*** off.

    Pretty simple, but thanks anyway.
