  1. Even ten years ago I couldn't have lived on what I do now, but my needs have changed.

I think that's important, what you want out of your retirement.

I was never lazy so I think it's something I need to work on now. B)

That is going to be my biggest problem, sitting on my hands. Don't know if I can do that???

Would like to do woodwork as a hobby, but need to buy all new tools I already have in Canada. When I sell off everything, will buy then.

  2. Good job. You remembered to resize the photo before uploading. No bigger turkey than posting an oversized image file. Considering the season here is a sample of the biggest image for easy viewing.

Thanks VF, although at times it's hard to fly with the eagles when you ride with turkeys HaHaHa

  3. OK now that I am going to live here 6 months a year until the economy comes back in Canada so I can sell off the property there and transition into CR full time, what can I expect to pay each months. I maintain my place in canada on a pension and would like to be comfortable, not well off here.

I bought the wife a car, 8000 bht / month and have no housing cost other then hydro/internet/water and food at our local market in Pong Phrae area. In the past year, I have taken care of all the usual costs of gold/smart phone/computer/HiSo stuff. Now it is just day to day food with fuel for running around to see see in the car and my motorcycle. The family has accepted my AMT is closed :whistling: .

I know I will spend outside this for toys, but don't include that in the house budget. Any thoughts on this appreciated. I do expect the usual banter, so have fun with this  :jap: but constructive too OK.

  4. I have a thai wife, that I suppose was a thai bride at some point prior to marriage. I am 60, she is 35. I was looking for an asian wife, she was looking for a farang husband when we met on ThaiLove***** website. I was not born yesterday, nor was she, we both knew what we were doing. Now this courtship may have lacked the trappings of a western one, in that I didn't pretend to be interested in her mind, that education, communication and meeting my social standing were important. Yes, she speaks english at a grade 3 or 4 level, no big words. Does that stop us from talking? I was able to explain myself quite clearly to my children at that level, why not an adult?

To answer the queastion "Thai Bride" Why the name? Because they are thai!!! You ever hear the term "Western Bride", Russian Bride". It is an industry that has come out of the communication era. Back in the day of the "Slow boat to China" you didn't see many western men married to asian brides. No one had the time. Took a year to go find, marry and return in those days. No different then people saying "gee, that guy has Ikea furniture". Does Ikea furniture have the cost and maintainace problems of home grow furniture? NO! Maybe on this level it has appeal? I do love my wife, so next topic is "what is love" HaHaHa

  5. Before retiring to thailand, I built custom furiture for a small market. I also bought and used Ikea as who would put a bunch of kids in a rec room on furiture that took 40 hours to custom build? The stuff stands up well, does exactly what it is supposed to do and is well designed for an average guy to assemble. Some of the upper lines are really quite nice and, yes, it hurts my ego to admit it, I stole a few design ideas from them.

  6. It was a nice ride and I got to meet two new people, good guys, not to worry Scorp, you're a nice guy too :whistling:

Yes, that run down that gravel was dicey for my bike, but at least I know why I wanted a more cross over type of bike. Great sights and lunch was very good.

I certainly need to find that sheep skin, man my butt was sore.

    Later guys

VF, great photos, thanks. I did borrow one to send to my brother who is coming over to do some riding with me. Hope that is OK. It is often easier to beg for forgiveness than ask permission :D

  9. I am a drunk, not an alchoholic, i dont go to meetings. I would try AA, if they weren't religious based. That turns me off.

Actually, religion has nothing to do with AA. There are many none believers in AA, as in any group of people.

Religion is for people who are afraid of going to "Hell".

Spirituality is for people who have been there.

You are not a drunk, nor an alcoholic so don't worry about it.

  10. I think there is a very good case for going out and drinking at the moment....

Who knows when Chiang Rai supplies will dry up.

And those less fortunite that live in and around Bangkok that wish they could dry out.

I'll just throw this out there, AA has 2 meetings a week in CR.

    Check the web.

  11. I am up for any ride, social butterfly you know :)

I'm 30k west of CR on old CM road.

I'm ready to go, someone say where and when !

    B):)B)

I am all in as well as noted above for a run around the route up to wawi and then the china memorial and back down to Hwy running CR to Mai Sai,

I had said the 6th, which is a sunday so is that date/run alright?

OK, starting 6th of Nov, where do we start and when?

I know where Wawi are, on the road between Mae Suai and Tha Ton but the only China Memorial I know of is in Mae Salong... Is that the one?

Looking forward to a good trip!

    :);)

Nov. 06 we can meet at Mae Saui (along CM Hwy. turn right, stop at coffee) around 0900? The china memorial I believe is the one at Doi Mae Salong. Also a good place to stop for eats and has some nice markets. I'll let Kandy know as he said he is up for a ride as well. This is all based on a one year old memory and I believe it is approx. 250K? round trip.

  13. The negativity here is depressing.

Whatever figure was given out I think TV members would moan saying it was too high or too low.

That's all you lot do is moan. Your sarcasm is almost racist.

A determination to find a long term solution to the flood problems is precisely what is needed and it is going to cost a huge amount of money. The money will create a huge number of jobs for Thais and will benefit the whole of Thailand not just Bangkok. Why does everyone here condemn it before anything has even been started. Just because some of the money will go astray is no reason for that. Money goes astray in all government spending all over the world. Look at your home countries before spouting your puritan bullshit here.

Have you only just noticed? All the posters in this particular thread are totally anti government no matter what it does, some virulently, some just sarcastically. As I wrote elsewhere if a meteorite crashed into Bangkok they would claim it was Yingluck's fault.

Thank you two for your comments. I am so tired of the BS that seems to pore out here, the negativity of some posters. If you have nothing constructive to add, "DON'T". Reading here is like watching a hockey game with a bunch of armchair potatoes that have never played the game as they yell at the poor performance of the players when they can hardly walk far enough to get a beer!!!!!!

Maybe it's time I just stopped reading this TV stuff.

  14. Yes, cold, just last monday I had to scrape ice off my windscreen and drive to the airport.................................................Oh and got on an airplane to Thailand!!!!

  15. My last 'real' trip was with Rudi's Chiangrai Rangers MC on a borrowed Phantom...

Can't even remember anymore how long time ago that was. I think it was the first

'farang' motorcycle club here in town.

    Limbo :yohan:

Even I remember that time and I were a member too. I have a t-shirt somewhere. I don't know what happened to Chiang Rai Rangers MC, just disappeared.

The only ride I remember with CRRMC were all the way to the Stadium and there we had a couple of beers and then we went back home again.

    :ermm::unsure::blink::o

My trip with CRRMC was the Thoeng-Chiangkhong-Chiangsaen route. I remember long pitstops

at gasoline stations and a night in Chiangkhong. Beer Chang and a lot of beer Chang.

    It didn't really help.

Riding a motorcycle together didn't seem to automatically include a go-ground for a splendid

    conversation.

At the gasoline stations mostly technical, motorcycle oriented details passed in review

and once seated together at a table in Chiangkhong we collectively and desperately ran out

of any text that could fuel an exchange of mind about other subjects.

When the vroom-vroom inbetween the ears had left the silence became deafening ... :D

And the remnants of the adrenaline were drowned in Chang.

But a happening it was! More than sufficient

    Limbo :yohan:

Nice observation :-) as a proud owner of a recently acquired Phantom (late model, low mileage, unbelievable price) I've recently progressed from "no way I'm getting on that" to "where there's a will there's a wobble". So, much as I really enjoy negotiating ownership of the road with my local chickens, buffaloes and dogs, I'm definitely not ready for a major 2 wheeled excursion. (I never even realised that "torque" wasn't a mis-spelling of "talk" until well-advanced in years - last week I think!). However if the route was right 4 wheels would work. I'm also not in favour at all of being part of a bunch of culturally illiterate farangs who get their kicks swooping through Thai villages at 100 mph as if Thailand is just a backdrop to their adolescent bonding fantasies. But having met one or two of the bikers I'm sure that's not the case.

I'm of the same mind, no speed demon here. The only part you will move at a quick pace is the trip from CR to Mae Saui along CM Hwy. After you will experience breathtaking speeds of up to 50K with a great part of the trip off bike. Then the drive back along the Mai Sai to CR Hwy, any speed you want. I fear running into kids, dogs and those large brown things that always win during an impact with a cycle. The trip is 250K around the loop with a short run into the China Memorial site and lunch. Beautiful drive, too nice to speed along, slow and smell the roses. How about Nov. 06 we go at a meet at Mae Saui (along CM Hwy. turn right, stop at coffee) around 0900?

  16. Had a great time and yes, food was really good. Sure like those beans and sorry, but went back for more. My wife Lisa also enjoyed it as it was a chance to speak to other poor women married to farang as well :whistling: . Seems I scored about average in the husband scale, altho high in the handsome scale HaHaHa!!

Thank you all for a nice friendly visit, will do it again.

    Bob/Lisa

  17. So, I'm looking for a 12v Cigar lighter adaptor type thing.

    Female. preferably waterproof.

I want to be able to power the GPS from the Motorbike as well as the Car and it seems the easiest solution.

Jubby, still looking for the plug in for the GPS? I bought 2 of the marine ones, excellent units, completely water proof and still sitting on my dresser in Canada where I put them so I wouldn't forget. I did find some here, they are at the shop near Pizza Hut place, sells speakers and electrical stuff, These are plastic and brass so reasonably weather resistant. I'll use heat shrink to seal the wires and hard wire it under the side cover of the bike next to the battery. Ask for them as they were in a bag behind the counter and 25bht.

  18. Finally back after a terrible summer in Canada (west coast) and a cold and wet fall. Arrived today to sun and warm and going to get the bike cleaned up and ready for a new riding season. I do like this part of cool nights and warm day. Last spring early summer here was to much for me, but I think if I stay will adjust. Just love this place people and things. Would not change any of it.

I have a buddy in Canada, who tells me that anything warmer that -20c is to dam_n hot  . He is a sled racer, so I'm sure he likes the powder around that temperature, nice and dry B)

There are people like that in Canada. It is an illusion they MUST maintain for sanity purposes or young and dumb likeI was, once upon a time. You have to ask, where did the term “snowbirds” comefrom if it isn’t Canadians fleeing the winters there?

  19. West. All the above, but keeping BKK bank for you, U.S. based retire, is you have a BKK bank in New York should you need to move money back or to here from the US. I use BKK bank as it's international ties, at least in Canada made swift transfers easy, I am sure others are as easy. I am basing this on my limited knowledge of thai banking so please disregard if not useful.
