  1. The roads are all hard surface, serious hair pins, usual watch out for holes in some areas. This is based on last years ride in Oct/2010. Now I did the ride very slowly as I am all about look see. The short side, just Wawi/Santikili stretch is better part of the morning if you leave from Hwy 1/Chiang Mai Hwy, west down to Mae Suai (easy 20 minutes) then turn off to the north and go around in a circle back to Hwy 1 just south of Mae Sai (Mae Sai to CR 1 hour at speed). I wish I could give better times, but when I did the trip I really took my time looking, eating and coffee/smoke breaks. The Chinese memorial is really worth seeing and was 20 bht last year, the gardens and shops are great.

When I fly in Oct 25 I'll get on running up the bike and should look at a ride beginning Nov???? I do have a GPS (did have when I left) mounted on the bike (mount by CR Saddle Bags) so no worry about time as it gives "time to" so we can always change the plan as we go.

So "up to you" HaHaHa (wife hates that saying). :D

  2. I have to assume that this topic being way back at page 14 is because of weather, not lack of interest. So as Kandy put it, when do we set up another trip? I'll be back for another 6 months on the 25th. Thinking to break in my butt, a run up around Doi Wawii (VaaVii?), to the Chinese Memorial SantaKili (sp) over to Doi Chan then down to Mae Sai and back to CR. There are lots of jump offs to shorten the ride if Doi Chan (Queen Mother's house/gardens) is too far. Great food and coffee along the way with great mountain sites over to Burma. Road is fun and a challange, did it last year both bike and car.

    What do ya say????

  3. Little over a year ago, I bought a GPS at the book store at BigC. Was pricey, but has a translation program from english to thai and back. Also includes medial translations, science and building materials. Really good mapping with it and have used it way back country where even the small dirt roads between rice fields were there. The graphics are basic but in colour and is somewhat better then the tomtom I use in canada.

  4. I'll try here and see if I get the info: For a Swift transfer from Canada to Bank of Bangkok Chiang Rai, I need a tax #? Now is this a tax number for me? or the bank? If the bank, where can I find it on my bank book? If for me, well I don't have one and would prefer not being taxed on my money by canada and again by Thailand  .

    Thanks guys

  5. I read through this "story" and find it runs very similar to the scam emails one gets. Even to the extent of the bad English used in the "story".

I just find that the whole story sucks and is at all not true. You have the 'rich Chinese man" the Manager, the driver, and the gambling expert.. Purely fiction from a D class novel!

    What dam_n rubbish!

I agree, story just doesn't add up. She used gold and cash?

Where did she sign away the house?

  6. It is realistic, I have been involved similar in BC Canada with reasonable success using the under toe shown but also offshore underwater breakwaters to slow wave action. No matter what man makes, the ocean can move it, always plan for that. The advantage to underwater breaks is also increased fish habitat and slowing erosion of the beach.

  7. I find it very interesting to see that those dependable critics of thai folly are not speaking out against this flagrant example of the same reckless behavior on the part of NASA (and Americans in general).

I see we have an American bashing opportunist in our midst. So, no other countries have launched vehicles in space? No others have uncontrolled re-entry vehicles. How many have just kept quiet and let the vehicle do what it may and not announce it as the US did?

    List of 'known' countries launching:

    Soviet Union/Russia

    USA

    France

    Japan

    China

    UK

    European Space Agency

    India

    Israel

    Ukraine

    Iran

Oh and around 3 dozen other countries such as Canada, Australia, Germany, Poland, etc... have launched payloads via hiring launch vehicles.

Oh and around 3 dozen other countries such as Canada, Australia, Germany, Poland

But you all know, if it was a Canadian Sat. we would have asked permission for it to degrade and fall to earth!!!! :D

    Canadians are So Polite!!!!

  8. the bargirls provide the right answer: "up to you"

if you feel you are cheating when flirting online, you are cheating.

if your spouse thinks you are cheating, it doesn't matter if he/she's right or not.

I a man, and for me, I would feel I am cheating. Just feels wrong. Now in the same breath, I do not think enjoying the view while at the mall is bad, eye candy is less fattening if just viewed :)

  9. As an aside, the best penetrating oil money can buy is brake fluid, just be careful around auto paint, will also strip that right off. WD has the benefit of being able to spray into tight places but if I can get brake fluid on it, I use it.

  10. I have lived very safely & happily in PATTAYA for 19 years. I had to visit Phuket, last week, on business and I was very glad to be flying out of there again, after 3 days.

Brilliant Marinas; Terrific Restaurants (9th Floor: WAUW ! !); but the entire undertone (Patong-Beach area) I found very sub-standard and even 'un-pleasant'!

Apart from all that; the prices people charge for tings like Coffee & American Breakfast are ludicrous ! ! I like Pattaya and I am very happy to have come home again ! !

PS: Before you 'anti-Ptty-ers' start: one does not HAVE to go to Walking-Streets; Sois 6; 7 and/or 8.

    Heck; We even have a Vineyard >15 minutes drive from Pattaya . . . . .

    :jap:

Well said. The wife and I honeymooned here, had a wonderfull time, great food. A little crowded, but what trourist spot is not? I enjoy people, food, history and accept a certain cost to being tourist. Short stay then back home to our quiet village in north thai.

Keep your head in the game, watch your own 6 and play smart.

  11. Wake up!! Not about cost, but the result. If it was a fair price, the beating was OK? A sorry reflection on police action or lack off. Also a wake up call to people travelling, stay aware, limit you use of alcohol and research your destination, could happen in any country. It is the lack of responce by police.

  12. I can't help but think "if this was serious" a "threat to the world as a whole" would not the concerned western countries shut down their borders? Ban world travel and "isolate" those that have come back from the "hot spot" or near it?? Air travel is worse then some poor bird migrating. Here in Canada, during the H5N1, sales were high for shots but free shots were slow as they said "this is a precaution against"? A typical knee jerk canadian responce to media hype.

I do agree with the post that one day, maybe sooner then most of us would like, an outbreak of some kind is over due. Air travel will see to that.

  13. The one thing thai or farang can not do about electric shock is bring this unfortunite soul back. CPR works in about 5% or less. One can hope his passing is not in vane and we (as in I) learn from this. I love thailand as thailand, with faults and beauty. As a builder I noticed the electric first thing and act cautious, but life is fragile in any country.

    God bless his soul.

  14. "The dtac 3G comes out on top in terms of speed thanks to the ample 10 MHz bandwidth," added Pakorn. "This means the network can accommodate higher concurrent users and provides speeds of up to 42 Mbps downlink and at speed rate of mega bit per second ranged uplink."

Like to see them actually hit a 42 Mbps!!!! Rules state that if a company can offer 2G at consistant speed near top 2G, they are allowed to sell it as 3G. Even in North America, 4G is just 3G running at a speed that is an acceptable 3G rate. Get to charge more for a service they are finally supplying (3G now called 4G). Bandwidth will always dictate just how fast, maybe 3G at 3am in the morning?

  15. OP: I don't think the issue was so much about losing face than about what is doable and what not.

I assume the dealers have prices for the base model from which they can't budge much.

A neighbour of mine is a sales manager at a local Isuzu dealer and he said there's not a lot of room to maneuver on the price of new cars.

Yes, it seems Isuzu is running pretty close to list price to compete (no reflection on the unit), but I was also told by the wife (thai), one doesn't barter over new cars? I tend to agree that this is a "my money" (not hers) and to seem HiSo, pay what they say!!! The salesman did understand english and was ready to add goodies for free to the truck. I was told by the brother of wife, that often, late model trucks, 2011 will be priced at the new 2012 list and to watch for this as they will move back down, but you buy what is in stock then. My feeling are this, I don't live with the salesman so do I care what he thinks of me after I buy????? I do can what the money in my pocket thinks HaHaHa. And the WIFE? She will be just as happy to drive a new truck and tell her friends I paid more then I did.
