  1. BookMan is correct. The USA complaining of Agricultural Susidies is the Proverbial Wolf In a Sheep's Skin. The US Govt grossly subsidises the US Corn Crop, thereby skewing all world trade in Animal Meats, because corn is the prime constituent of most animal feeds. We are talking many 100's of billions of USD. Nary a word about this in the Presidential Debates. If the USA stopped it's insane wars, terminated the corn subsidy which is not really necessary and cut back drastically on the money flooding into Israel ... it could balance it's budget in a short time.

  2. People from British Columbia are Canadians ... or canucks ... as in Johnny Canuck.

I wonder why ferang criminals don't just knock over a few Thai Banks, which have very little security. The regional City Banks have no security that I've seen. A few of the big malls in Udon or Nong Khai have a few unarmed elderly guards. Even the Chiang Mai Banks seem clueless about security. Once, at a Kasi Korn Bank in Ban Dung, I saw a delivery guy pack 1MM ThB into a ratty shoulder bag, jump onto a trashed scooter and head off to deliver the money. I was cashing $2k USD into my Account. I told the desk manager, that in America ... that guy would get less than one block before he was robbed and that their bank would be robbed almost immediately. "Not our Culture", he said. I guess the Russian Mafia guys are just too drunk to bother with robbing banks, when they can exist of the avails of their thai GF's.

  3. There is virtually little or no town planning anywhere in ThaIand. 40 story buildings have septic fields in BKK, which is 2.0m below sea level. Heavy rains in virtually all Thai cities cause septic sludge to flow all over the terrain. I realise that Engineering is not a Thai strong suit and neither is Public Health. I've seen large niteclubs open up in the middle of villages, a slaughter house opened up next door to a ferang friend's rented rural house. Adjacent properties were given no notice. The Police & Govt Authorities were all paid off. As far as I know, no compensation was ever offered to the adjacent property owners & renters. That is why many expats recommend to newbies ... rent, rent and RENT again! You will inevitably loose the money anyways. Never invest more than you are prepared to loose.

  4. The big problem in all the non western countries, is the sterility of the operating facilities. I'm amazed at the number of stupid people having surgery done in Thailand, India, Mexico. Even if these hospitals have western trained Ferang Surgeons, the equipment can still be contaminated. I'd never have anything serious done in LOS. An Accident leaves you no choice , but get stabilised and placed on the 1st available plane home.

An aquaintence had a scooter accident in Chiang Mai, which resulted in a his leg badly broken in several places. He had the leg bones re-set and went back to Canada immediately. Total cost was $27K CAD, i/c one way airfare. His Vancouver doctors checked him over c/w X-rays & imaging. They said the Thai's did a very good job and they could not do any better. I'm not sure what hospital he went to, but Kudos to those Chiang Mai based, Thai Medical Staff.

  5. I'm surprised that Shianouk never retired to Thailand? He should feel at home in LOS, as he was a Government change survivor. Virtually all his relatives in Cambodia were butchered off by the Khmer Rouge & Pol Pot. The facile Shianouk managed to foist off everyone, the Cambodian Republicans & Lol Non's Army, the USA, Russia, China, North & South Vietnams and the goofy Khmer Rouge & Pol Pot's Henchmen. He adroitly played them all off, against each other, very successfully. Each gave him many millions of USD. I doubt he would take Chinese Yuan, which at the time had no value outside of Mainland China.

He could have escaped to the west at many times; but presumably he milked the ever gullible Chicom Govt, for all the money he could get. Nevertheless; if Pol Pot recieved shelter from the Thai & US Govts at his Trat located Villas, surely Shianouk could have ensconced himself in BKK or Chiang Mai in relative safe comfort?

  6. Thai RN's that speak fluent English can probably find jobs in all the English speaking countries. I recently had occasion to observe a large Canadian Hospital in action while I was taking 6 weeks of Radiation & Brachytherapy Treatments. I inadvertently wandered onto a Heavy duty ward. Patients in the hallways ... some prepped for the operating theatre, nurses running around. We could definitely use more nurses.

  7. Smart drug mules will always turn state evidence. She must been really clueless. Yaba is made by the truckload @ Thai owned Yaba factories on the Burmese Border. Previously these factories made heroin, which htey sold internationally on a truckload basis in BKK. Once the US moved it's Military Drug Operations to Afghanistan, the Thai Heroin Manufacturers had to shut down their Thai/Burmese Operations. They literally had warehouses full of valuless heroin in BKK. The entrprenurial Thai Factory Owners rapidly converted to making Meth Amphetamines (Yaba). That is why you see so many herky jerky Thai street people wandering around at night, in all the larger and some smaller, Thai cities. Yaba is cheaper than cigarettes. The usual historical parasites take their sales percentage at every transaction level. After 300 years of drug operations, they are very experienced at running such "Black" Operations.

  8. Lothda appropriately points out that you are not wealthy, if you still have to work. $200K USD is upper middle class ... not wealthy. I really doubt the veracity of this survey. Why would wealthy people live in countries with a dismal climates, unless they absolutely had to? I expected Thailand to be around 25 C from Nov - Feb. I usually find it to be nearer 35 C and 85% humidity. I don't recall BKK or Singapore being that hot, when I was there in 1972/73. Singapore is even hotter all year long. Really wealthy people live in Burmuda, the Bahamas & Martineque. If you can get up to 700m or even 1000m altitude, like Dalat in Vietnam ... then you are in Nivarna. Beautiful weather all year long. I doubt the nite life in Da Lat would interest most "wealthy" people. The Golf Course is nice, but grossly over priced as per Cambodia & China. Thailand is admittedly a Golf Nivarna ... which is why I go there ... oh ya ... the gals ...

  9. Like others above, I worked in the Natural Gas Pipeline Industry for 38 Years as an Engineering Technologist. I conducted a number of studies based on actual pipeline acccidents in North America. 70% of all pipeline damage is due to 3rd Party Damage ... that is, some outside agency hitting the pipeline during an excavation, train wreck, etc. Only something like 10% was due to corrosion. That being said, most North American Pipelines over 50 years old are probably somewhat suspect. The key is of course maintenance, corrosion & leak surveying, Right of Way Patrolling & other Maintenance Procedures. A "PIPELINE" is defined as any pipe operating in excess of 100 psi/700kPa/6.8 Bar. They are governed by various State/Provincal/Federal Pipeline Acts ... irrespective of what fluid they carry.

It was repeatedly my experience working for various Pipeline companies, that the Pipeline Maintenance started well. After 10-20 years, a new Maintenance Manager replaced an older experienced Manager. The new Mgr determined that nothing had ever happened in 10 years, so the Maintenance Schedule could safely cut back, less surveillence, patrols, corrosion inspections. The company saved Millions of USD annually. The new Mgr was hailed by upper management as a forward thinking executive and usually promoted him up the ladder. 5 years later, I was in court on a $7.5 Million USD Case, where our pipeline was damaged by Adjacent Land Preloading. Eventually we only got 50% of the repair cost, due to the new manager's altering the maintenance schedule. He never was in court. The company's very expensive legal firm would not allow any of the responsible managers anywhere near the court room. The lawyers did not even interview them. It was an interesting but stressful experience. That happened 2X in my work life.
