I hate to inject facts here when speculating is so much fun but consider this: The dose of DEET that is required to kill 50% of the rats treated is over 2 grams DEET per kilogram body weight of the rat (source: USEPA). Assuming that htese unfortunate women weighed 60 g, they would each have had to ingest 120 grams of DEET to have a 50% chance of dying from the exposure. This would be about 4 ounces of pure DEET. However, the most concentrated form sold commercially is 41% meaning that they would each have had to drink at least an 8 ounce tumbler of the straight product. I don't think it is possible for anyone to get drunk enough not to notice that they were drinking a glass of mosquito repellant.

As far as I am aware there is a huge amount of sediment that comes down the Mekong, I wonder how the turbines would cope with large amounts of possibly coarse granules passing through in wet season, and how long till the inflow of sediment into the dam reduces it's water holding capacity?

Check with the Egyptian Hydraulic Engineers on silting b/h the Aswan Dam. Egypt also lost a $100 Million USD pa Sardine Fishery, when the Dam was built in the 1960's.

The 3 Gorges Dam in China will almost immediately loose some of it's efficiency, due to silting b/h the Dam(s). I don't think the Dam Engineers really thought this one thru, but they must have been aware of the Aswan Dam's silting problems.

I live on the Columbia River in Canada. Prior to construction of the existing 48 Dams on the total Columbia River System, the water was full of silt. Now it is near pristine clear. The silt all drops out in the Reservoirs upstream. Nice water, but not a lot of aquatic life in the river.

Tranfers from Canadian Banks are pathetic. My local TD Bank tells me they will change their International Bank Draft Transfer System drastically in 2013. They are 50 years behind other International Banking Systems. Sometimes it takes 30 days before one can actually cash a Canadian Bank Transfer. I can not send money from my Cdn Bank Acct to my Thai Kasi Korn Acct; but can do so the other way around. But the Cdn Bank won't allow Direct deposit either way. Supposedly, I will be able to do so in 2013. About time. I won't get into the cost of Cdn Cell Phone Rates vs. Thai Mobile Rates.

I'd hop onto this Oz Visa bandwagon, if I was an Ausssie. I checked @ Cdn Embassy in BKK. They probably wouldn't issue a Visa to my Thai GF ... due the "Have cause to return to Thailand". GF is a "farm lady", not bar lady. She wasn't working for many years. She had travelled to Sweden several times in a previous relationship. No problems for about a 4k ThB Agency Fee. She even worked in Sweden for several months. However, the Cdn Govt very hard nosed about a 35 year old Thai women consorting c/w a 65 year old Cdn. I met several Cdn Oil Field Guys on various Thai Golf Courses who were much closer in age to their Thai GF/Wife. They related horror stories with the Cdn Embassy.
