  1. Thai Police not on the scene as there is no way to make money from flooded out people. Immense loss of face to demand money from these (now) very poor people. Farangs all Pai Leo, Leo from BKK to Pattaya or Issan. Must have brother police officer to stopping Farangs in Issan for 200 ThB contribution to Policeman Benefit Fund. My farang friend was going 90 KPH on Hwy 2 in Khon Khen. Hwy Police stop ask for 200 ThB fine for speed. Farang golfers asking where is radar. Policeman saying before on Hwy 2. We are saying no, we not see. OK him saying other way. Him speaking good Angkarit. Very funny. Usually these police can not speaking Angkarit?

  2. Dog catchers come down our soi about 1 day per month. I'd like to load the whole lot of "barking @ 2:00am canines" onto the trucks, for shipment to Vietnam! A dog is no different than a moo, whoa, gwai, plagh, khon or gai. They are all raised for human consumption. Thai's eat snakes, rats, insects, land crabs, snails, etc. It is a real pity that the Thai Govt interfered with these valuable exploiters of the animal food chain. Undoubtedly they have already been replaced and we will see the dog man coming down our soi in the near future. I don't believe i have ever seen a local spayed or neutered dog around our village.

  3. A recent World Health Organisation (WHO) report has pegged the number of female prostitutes in the country at 2 lakh.

can someone enlighten me? how much is 2 lakh.?

    thaisabai

    2 lakh = 2 x 100,000 = 200,000. Lakh (100,000) is an Indian Word, probably derived from Pali.

I think there are probably more than 200,000 hookers in all of Thailand. They may refer to full time vs. part time prostitution.

  4. My thoughts too ,something will have to be done

The Dutch know how to manage water

Sorry; predictions are the Dutch will soon be swimming, as their Mega Billion Guilder Dikes & Tidal Gates are eventually breeched by the ever rising Atlantic Ocean. The melting ice caps are likely to melt ever faster. Geologic Ice Research indicates that previous melting(s) over the past several million years, eventually reached catastrophic melting rates. Should this happen, the Dutch will likely have to emmigrate to Germany. They are always welcome to emigrate to Canada.

  5. Muslims pray 5 times per day. Several of the repeated prayers, are that "Allah" allow them to kill infidels. While the prayers may well be in Arabic, which most Muslims do not comprehend fluently, I continue to have a problem with people who pray that Allah enables the supplicant to kill me, 5 times per day. Remember, that is Muslims everywhere.

  6. Suggest you check out Thai ripoffs on the Internet, before marrying & moving to Thailand. Best to live for 2-6 months in Issan, before deciding to move there. Check out her extended family; becuase they will be checking out your finances. Good advice from my Danish Pal in Nong Khai, "Expect to loose everything you invest in Thailand". Remember you are a Farang ATM to your Thai family. The fastest way for the family to come up with the inevitable $25,000 to fix grandma's health problem or a serious legal problem, is to hit you up for the cash. Your Thai Visa can be cancelled with $500 USD Bribe to the local village Chief or Police Captain. You are served witha Visa Cancellation Notice and have 48 hrs to clear the country. I have met several older farangs in Bars in Vientiane, Laos & Poipet, Cambodia with a sad tale of being ripped off for $100,000 of Thai investment. Check out the Internet for many of these stories, Cha, Cha my man. There is always another Thai GF to be had. Much safer to buy a Condo or Strata titled residence; but even those are subject to various ripoffs. Farangs can not privately own land in Thailand.

  7. The Commies tried this in Russia (1917) & China (1949. It caused enormous collateral damage. Russia & China (each) butchered around 20-30 Million people (that we know of). The Economies totally collapsed. How bizarre, that we have the Germans to thank for promoting Russian Communists and the Japanese for saving the Chinese Communist Party. I've never heard a German or Japanese apologizing for promoting Communism. These were castostophic human experiences; which are best not repeated..

  8. I realize that this is not the USA. I'm normally pretty conservative but 300 hundred baht per day is barely a livable wage. The minimum wage in the USA varies from state to state with the lowest being $7.20 per hour and the highest being $12.50 per hour. Note that this is per HOUR and not a day. Some food prices in the USA are cheaper than here and some are more expensive. Many US made products are cheaper than similar Thai made products. Many Thai companies make obscene profits at the expense of poorly paid workers. It is past time for Thailand to raise the standard of living for the workers.

The farmers have been cheated for many years by the wealthy middlemen. You may or may not know that the middlemen rarely or never pay the support price for farm products. They usually use the excuse that their quota is filled and that they don't need any more product unless the farmers accept a lower price.

The gap between the haves and have nots definitely needs to be narrowed. This is a first step to narrowing the HUGE gap.

History will show you that the way you narrow the gap is by bringing the wealthy down to the level of the poor. Too often people think this works the other way.

That is not to say I don't agree we should do it. There are many social benefits, including a much more stable society, less envy and animosity between the citizens, etc. The way I would recommend to fix the wealth gap is by abandoning capitalism and embracing distributism. Heavily tax every industry above the minimum size necessary to function. All department stores, grocery stores, 7-11 etc. will go away. The country can get by on mom and pop shops and local community supported establishments. We don't need the labor efficiencies of large corporations. We need full employment more egalitarian options.

The purpose of this is not to make everyone rich and wealthy. Human nature doesn't allow for that, especially not now with soaring energy prices. But a nation built on distributist philosophies would allow resiliency in the face of the coming energy decline and industrial collapse. It would reduce the discontent in the population and be more peaceful in general. And by outlawing corporations and multinationals associated with terminal stages of capitalism, there would be little concentration of wealth in the hands of extremely rich merchants.

No, its not ideal, but it is possible. The existing proposals that I see, the ones with an idea of forcing structures that are designed to concentrate wealth to distribute wealth instead, are doomed to failure. Any effect will be transient if it can be seen at all.
