  1. cant you just empty the fridge, defrost and clean it with chlorine or something similar

We did. Threw everything that was in it in the bin (sealed), stripped out all the shelves etc, and cleaned it with caustic soda (I think). However, there are tiny inaccessible nooks and crannies that we couldn't get into without completely dismantling the fridge.

  2. I have never turned the refrigerator off when I have been away, however, it has never been more that 2 weeks or so.

But, in 2000 we went to Cha Am for Christmas (1 week) and returned on New Years Eve with a stack of frozen foods from Tesco (Khorat - we didn't have one in Surin then) to find that although the fridge was running, everything inside that and the freezer was rotten and maggots and flies were everywhere. The neighbours informed us that there had been a major accident and the power had been off for 3 days! It took almost 2 months to finally clear the smell from the fridge.

  3. Jayenram - the photo here, is captioned 'Bungalows on Long Beach' - but wasnt taken on Long Beach. It looks like one of the resorts on Salakphet Bay, in Chek Bae village.

On Long Beach there are only one place to stay 'Treehouse' with 200 baht/night fan huts on the beach - no landscaped gardens, no concrete bungalows, no aircon bungalows and one other place to eat - Sea Breeze - just past Hat Yuthanavy. Goodplace to stay if you haveyour own transport and want a real backpacker experience.

Not too far away from Long Beach,at the far southeastern tip of Koh Chang - opposite Koh Ngam - there are some very nice new bungalows being built on the site of some old fishing huts - but these aren't on a beach.

If they weren't taken on "Long Beach" then I am mistaken on the name of the beach. The beach where the photos were taken is at the end of the 'road' which virtually skirts the eastern coast for half the length of the island before turning inland. A left turn then takes you to what is apparently an old naval monument (didn't see any evidence of this though) and the road peters out in a small wooded area and then the beach in question.

Sorry about the delayed reply, I missed it first time around.

  4. Why don't you make your own? You just need some chillies, lime, garlic and maybe some coriander root and a few of the basic Thai ingredients (or similar ingredients to suit your tastes).

Just a little warning from my experience. If you are using a liquidiser to blend fresh chilies, don't lift the lid and breathe in the fumes. :o:D

  5. Does anyone know of a Thai chat room where you can communicate with Thai women without having to pay fees? There's plenty of sites that advertise as "free" but as soon as you want to send the lady an email the agency wants an up front fee. I'm going back to live in Thailand shortly and thought it might be a better way to go than just meeting bar girls.

I met one of my now best mates (female) on Thaivisa chat. Unfortunately it's now defunct.

  6. That mid morning train (10.05am) is Number 71 and is probably the pick of the bunch :o

Or otherwise the 05:45 Piss ead train No 21. Gets you in Buriram or Surin in time for a lunchtime pint.

  7. ".... one reason why I continue to keep all my overseas cards active."

The overseas credit cards that I once had (Visa and Mastercard) refused to send my new cards to a Thai address. I know I could have had them sent to a relative in UK but by that time I had virtually no assets in UK so settling the bills would have been awkward.

  8. Given that the books are mostly in English, their customer base would appear to be farangs. It is not easy for farangs living in Thailand to obtain credit cards from Thai banks. American Express is an option but I recently returned mine when they doubled the yearly subscription fee (Bht 2,000 to 4,000) plus very few establishments in rural Thailand accept Amex and when they do, they add a surcharge of 3 - 5%.

  9. Today, I attempted to order two books from "Megabook Shopping" online.

Megabook Shopping will not accept either my Kasikorn Visa Electron debit card or my Kasikorn Bank K-Web Shopping Card. Is there any point to their advertisements in Thailand?
