  1. The article explains that amongst the fairly extensive paperwork needed, the first thing required is a certificate of residency available at immigration office at a cost of 300 Baht. On arrival at the immigration office I was told they had not issued these since last year and that I would need to go to my embassy or consulate for one. (UK consulate charge 2210 Baht for the

I this province (Surin), the "certificate of residency" is required for both the driving licence and for car ownership (same form, slightly differently filled in). The certificate is issued free of charge (but it's of benefit to tip (Bht100.00)) but you will need paperwork to prove that you live where you say. The paperwork, I believe, differs with each immigration office, so it would be prudent to speak to them first.

  2. Thank you very much "Yorkie" :o

I too enjoy clouds. Nice photos.

    Yours truly,

    Kan Win

The problem I have with "cloud pictures" results from me living close to a city (Surin?). As you know, interesting cloud formations rarely last more than a few minutes (particularly at sunrise/sunset) so it is necessary to be quick off the mark. Around Surin, we are restricted virtually everywhere by overhead cables (electric and telephone) and by the time I've chased around to find a suitable location, the moment has gone. Oh, well, c'est la vie.

  3. Although I assume things have changed somewhat since I lived there (left in 1999) the favourite haunts then (nightlife) were Bangsar and Damansara. But if you wish to stay around town, the Golden Triangle used to be the place to be. BTW, KL is not cheap!

For daytime, the Lake Garden is worth a short visit (head up Jalan Parlimen).

Other than that I agree with Phil who appears to have spent time there since I left.

  4. When I connected up my house I had a 30/100A supply installed (expensive but I can't remember how much). The cable (armoured) to the house cost me Bht 12,000 for 50 m (year 2000).

Notwithstanding that, when one of the showers is turned on (and the water supply pump) I experience substantial voltage drop causing the UPS on the computer to click in and out virtually continuously.

    Wow, not cheap!

Regarding your meter, was this supplied by the electric company? or did you install it yourself?

I'm still racking my brain to try and remember the installation cost. I have the receipt somewhere but it's with 3,000 others and I never got around to filing them in any kind of order (being all in Thai doesn't help). However, I'll hazzard a guess that the connection fee was over Bht 10,000.00 but the meter was included.

  6. I love to have eggs, sausages and sometimes bacon for weekend breakfasts. Or bangers and mash.

This latest research is a bit of a damper on that I'm afraid.

Be nice if it was just one of those extreme reports, but it doesn't come across that way.

Another smartarse attempting to justify his salary. If we listened to half of these so-called experts advising us what and what not to eat we'd either die of starvation or boredom.

Could someone pass me my fags, another beer and a bacon sarnie please?

    Poppycock!

  7. When I insert an SD card into my card reader, my system generates a "what do you want to do?" pop up. The pop up options obviously don't cover what I want to do but there is no option to "bugger off, leave me alone, and stop doing this in future" button. I don't even know which software is involved. Perhaps someone could direct me to a way to shut this annoying piece of crap down.

    Cheers in anticipation

  8. When I used to fly regularly I was generally on business (not business class) and I almost always contacted the airline to confirm the flight times. However, I always flew on a full price ticket (open return), so if I did manage to miss a flight, I'd just get on the next one.

To answer your question about who is responsible, I haven't a clue but under the circumstances that you outline, I would think that catching the next flight (depending upon availability), would be an option at no additional cost.

But, as had been said, TiT!

  9. The first, last and only time we were directly involved in growing rice was in 2000 on 12 rai of paddy.

    A. The rice plant was "pre-started" and re planted individually by hand (farm labour was then Bht 100.00/day).

    B. Fertiliser was used twice during the season at approx Bht 600.00 total per rai.

    C. The yield was 8 pac per rai (640 kg/rai) - The rice was harvested mechanically for 1 pac/rai.

    D. The price at the rice mill at harvest time was Bht 5.80/kg (we had minimal storage facilities).

    E. Our net profit in 2000 was Bht 950.00 per rai.

In 2001, we rented out the paddy for 2.40 pac per rai (approximately Bht 1,250.00/rai) at 2001 prices.

  10. I had a strange experience with this one.

I positioned the camera on a tripod early morning and captured the images at 5 minute intervals from when the lotus started to open. Because of the changing light conditions I used automatic exposure (and AWB) assuming that the results would be consistent. In the end they were not with definite changes in colour balance as the lighting changed. I tried to line them up and adjust each one in turn but failed so I used the "image" "autolevels" on Photoshop which gave me acceptable regular colours on the frames.

  11. You will need your registration book and, if the vehicle is over 7 years old, a "roadworthyness" certificate. Road tax will not be issued without CTPL (compulsory Government insurance) and the certificate if over 7 years old (5 years for motorcycles).

    See here for more info:

    Driving in Rural Thailand

I renewed mine last week. CTPL was Bht 900.00 and the test was around Bht 250.00 (plus V.A.T.).

  12. 4" pipe is one helluva big supply pipe for one dwelling. However, it will bend. You just have to expose a sufficient length to allow this to be practicable. The other way is to use a ring joint compression fitting (assuming the opposing ends are anchored). I've not seen a 4" diameter compression fitting available local to me, but this is a 1".

There is obviously a pressure limitation on this type of fitting but you don't say what pressure is in the main.

  13. If you like just fresh non cooked, google pico de gallo, if you prefer the bottled type, these are cooked and can add complexity to the flavors, try using canned chipotles if your making a simmered salsa. Only thing I'd add to the above recipe is a pinch or two of ground cumin.

I'm not sure that canned chipotles are available around these parts but I do have a liking for cumin. I'll try that next time or maybe just use dry roasted cumin seeds?

  14. Thanks but I already tried to contact Martin, I used the contact form on the Farang Connection website a few days ago and have received no reply, so this forum was my logical next place to ask the question.

Cheers on the heads up for the apartments, I am guessing they are the usual by the day, week or month kinda place? Nothing against them, just hoping for something a little more permanant.

I've checked the FC website and it appears that, with one exception, the houses for rent are quite large. If these are not suitable and if you want furnished accommodation the most logical way to go, IMO, is apartment rental.

  15. Also, if you have the patience, try roasting some (or all) chilies first to get a much broader and more mellow flavor. I think a Thai-style wok on high heat could be used to blacken the skins a bit, or just broil them on high heat if you have an oven... Some people will remove the blackest skin, but I like to roast them lightly enough that all the skin stays in. Put the darkest bits in the part you pulse in the blender. (But, too much blackened stuff and it will be bitter.)

I tried that the first time (roasting over an open gas flame on a toasting fork) but I think I personally prefer the "raw" taste of the chili. I suppose it depends a lot upon the type of chili being used (or available) and the toughness of the skins. I've heard that if using 'serrano' chilies it is better to sear and peel off the skins.

  16. I took zzdocxx and hurdy gurdy's advice and added a spoonful of garlic (pureed 2 weeks ago and frozen) to a batch I made yesterday. It certainly adds a zing. Unfortunately I underestimated the hotness of the Thai chilies (added 3 very finely chopped) so it's a little on the firery side.

However, I'm looking forward to a plate full of crisps (chips) with it at 12 noon when I pour my first Archa. A very pleasant combination for a hot summer's afternoon.

    Cheers
