  1. Am I the only one who disagrees?

From Bangkok to Surin (and thereafter Sisaket), I almost always use the 226 the only problem being there is no easy way to by-pass Khorat (Khorat at peak times can be very busy). Other than that the 226 is far less busy than the 24 has always appeared to me to be, particularly in respect of the 6/8 wheelers and trailers. When the upgrading of the 24 to dual carriageway as far as Prassat is complete, I may change my mind.

  2. During my last few years in the UK, I became rather partial to salsa (from a jar). Since leaving the UK I've not seen the product on the shelves and effectively gave up with it until last week I noticed some large cayenne chilies for sale in Big 'C'. I thought I'd give it a go and came up with this:

6 - 8 Large red chilies, coarsely chopped

    1 Large onion, coarsely chopped

8 Ripe firm(ish) tomatoes, skinned and coarsely chopped

Juice of 2 or 3 limes

A generous handful of fresh coriander, chopped

    A few dashes of vinegar

    1/4 tsp sugar

    Salt

A few Thai "hot" chilies, chopped (optional)

Mix the onion with the lime juice in a large bowl and set aside for 30 minutes. Add the remaining ingredients (except the Thai chilies) and mix well. Taste for hotness and add some Thai chilies to your taste. Put 50% of the mixture in a blender and pulse blend for a second or two. Return the blended mixture to the bowl, mix well and chill, preferably overnight.

Has anyone a different recipe that I may try?

    Cheers

  3. I am running 60psi+ and have been for several years with Thai plastic pipe (which I believe is rated 100psi). I can not imagine 15psi being an acceptable city standard anywhere - that is less than normal well pressure.

Domestic plumbing in the UK uses gravity feed from a break tank in the roof space. Therefore in the bathroom you have about 10 feet of static head which is about 4 psi and that is adequate. This is standard in the UK as the only point that takes water direct from the mains is the cold tap in the kitchen.

When I was in the UK (many years ago, admittedly) we had the following:

Cold water cistern in the loft to provide cold water to all but the kitchen cold tap and provide water for the hot water system (tank) located on upstairs floor.

I can't remember the exact heights but would guess the ground and first floor ceiling heights would be no more than 10 foot (3.00 m) each. Given a cold water cistern of 3 foot (1.00m) deep this would provide water to the first floor outlets at around 4 psig (as PhilHarries states) and around 8 psig to the ground floor outlets (except for the kitchen cold tap). I'm still convinced that the utility services would only guarantee a minimum water pressure of 15 psig at the kitchen cold tap (which would be around 7 psig at the cold water cistern (in my case)).

Simplified, summat like the drawing below:

  4. I put in a 305 watt Mitsubishi pump that is a behemoth of a It fills fine & quick, but probably only 10-15 psi at the shower sink bathroom sink, toilet & sprayer.

    Use a pump .

Raising the tank will up the psi only by .4316psi/ft .

If I remember correctly (which I rarely do), 15 psig is an acceptable water pressure for the domestic water supply in the UK. Also, I'm not convinced the normal plastic pipes and fittings here in Thailand would handle double that. And as Thumchok points out, you'll need to raise the tank a further 10 metres to achieve an additional 15 psi.

  5. That's great. I see what you've done BUT how do you get it to move as it does?

    Love to hear more

All the images are in one PSD file. Each one on a separate layer, the front one being at the "top". Then I made all the layers except the first "invisible" and saved it as "pic-1.jpg". Then made the second layer visible and saved it as "pic-2.jpg". Then the third layer visible saved as "pic-3.jpg" and so on. There is actually 20 images.

All the .jpg files were saved in their own unique folder and then transferred into Imageready by "import folder as frames" in the file menu. It was then just a matter of adjusting the speed of the animation until I was happy with it.

I've also tried "curving" the mirror image but cannot quite get it right as the picture I used doesn't appear suitable. I may try another picture but the process does take quite a long time.

  6. For the last few weeks my UBC signal has been dropping out at least 6 to 8 times a day. Many times I have to turn off theUBC tuner to allow the signal to reboot. Anybody else had these problems recently?

Same problem here starting last night. Just dropped off completely. I too had to reboot a few times.

  7. Just another observation; in a number of cases at "T" junctions, it is permissible to cross a red light when going straight on the horizontal part of the "T" if safe to do so (again, you do NOT have right of way). This manoeuver is only legally permitted when there is a sign to advise you.

  8. In virtually all situations outside the metropolis, you are permitted to turn left on a red light if safe to do so (you do not have right of way) UNLESS there is a sign that says you must not or a left turn arrow shows red. As far as I'm aware, there is not a standard sign, but from my observations, the following is common:

  9. One big interest I have now is web site design. I am creating a new website from scratch and have selected a web server and domain registrar.

Wondered if anyone else out there had or is having a similar experience as I am with web site design.

If you are only looking at basic design (not professional), get in touch with "yorkie". He has a few pages generally connected to Thailand and Thai life.

  10. MATH EXAM

For the unaware, there is a slight difference between private schools and comprehensives in Britain.

The Department of Education has realised this and has revised the secondary Math Exam papers accordingly.

Attached are the most recent math exam papers for your reference.

    1. Harry smashes up the old man's car, causing x amount of damage and killing 3 people. The old man asks his local Chief Constable to intervene in the court system, then forges his insurance claim and receives a payment of y. The difference between x and y is three times the life insurance settlement for the three dead people. What kind of car is Harry driving now?

    2. Fiona's personal shopper decides to substitute generic and own-brand products for the designer goods favoured by her employer. In the course of a month she saves the price of a return ticket to Fiji and Fiona doesn't even notice the difference. Is she thick or what?

  11. Another update:

I emailed Microglobe early in January and they replied that the lense was not actually in stock. They confirmed that they would dispatch the item on 25th (no month mentioned).

On 24th January, I received an email stating that my card was not acceptable (Kasikorn e-card).

I re-ordered the item using my Visa Electron (also issued by Kasikorn) but that was also refused.

I've since asked my daughter in the UK to order it on her card and I'll reimburse her.

I may get it in time for my next birthday.

  12. American Express hand out Thai credit cards in association with Thai Airways.

However, they are now charging Bht 4,000 p.a. and in my experience, many Thai outlets either don't take the cards or charge you 3% to 5% extra for the privilege.

For these reasons I've just surrendered my card after being with Amex since 1975.

  13. When the UPS starts to beep, I switch the computer and the UPS off. Is this a necessary or good thing to do or can the UPS deal itself with the electricity affairs ?

A UPS can only deal with electricity cuts for a certain length of time (depends on the model and what units are connected through it). Afaik, the cheaper models with CPU and monitor connected are unlikely to last more that 15 to 20 minutes. The idea of this is to allow you time to save your w*rk and shut down safely.

My UPS tends to bleep or 'click' intermittently if there is a voltage drop on the mains but this never appears to last long.

  14. Thanks for the great advice folks.

I tried some easy sort of animation stuff but couldn't get it to w*rk on "Imageready". I wanted to animate a candle flame using liquify but any effect is duplicated on all the frames. I've now prepared a set of images on Photoshop and imported them into Imageready but it appears to be a long way around.

    Cheers
