  2. Make sure to get insulated blocks

I took my builder to court and got a lot of money back from him.

He could not believe that a foreigner took him to court.

He stopped making payments to me, and I took him back to court again and the judge gave me more money and I actually received it.

I suggest that you pay only little by little, and pay for only the materials which are about to be used, over the next week each week.

Accept no reasons for why lots of materials need to be built right away. NONE!

    1. Steel and cement and sand for the foundation.

    2.

    3.

    4. etc

Pay for materials for only what you are about to have done. If you can order the materials yourself, do so, and the builder can pick them up. This way you will know that you are buying exactly what you want, and the best quality as well.

Best of luck. I built a house once. It was one of the only things that ever aged me. I will never do it again. Fortunately, I made a very good profit from it.

  3. I know nothing about this place, but.......

There is a very large building on Soi Wat Boon (sp?) in Jomtien. It was in a terrible state for many years, and I believe I remember seeing it being renovated.

It is approx 900 meters from the beach. I do not know the room sizes, nor the prices, but they should be reasonable, a lot more reasonable than most everything else in the area. You would not get top floor for that price, as top floor would be about 20+ floors high.

    Angket Hip Residence

From the beach, travel over 2nd road, and another 360 meters (google earth) the road veers to the right a little. The building is on the left side of the street. It is the only really large building there.

    best of luck to you.

You can also try the auctions.

  4. Remove 2m inside partition wall,

    a couple of thousand, TOPS!

    ceiling,

    a couple of thousand, TOPS!

floor and bathroom tiles incl. disposal.

    100 - 150 / meter removal

    - Floor- Tiling per sqm , I provide tile, grouting, but not cement, 40 inch tiles, no special pattern

150 baht / meter plus cement

    - Bathroom / Wall - Tiling per sqm, same as above, 10-inch tiles

150 baht / meter plus cement

    - Ceiling all new, with alufoil coated topside, sanded, painted and finished per sqm:

show us a photo of what you would like.

    - Average Electrical job for a small studio incl. materials and/or with all materials provided.

This is not specific enough. How many sockets, how many switches, cable tv, phone lines, internet access, above ceiling connections, new electric box, a/c ( yes or no), hot water heaters - how many, kitchen has..? hot pat, microwave, etc., need to know to see how large the electric box and fuses need to be along with the wire size.

    - Average Plumbing job for small studio labor only. 2 sinks, toilet, shower.

Installing sinks is less than 1,000 each... Do you already have the counter top built? The counter top may cost 3 - 4,000 depending on the size.

I have been quoted 1000 + per sqm tiling without materials,

    WAY OVER-PRICED

500 per sqm for ceiling etc. etc. Seems to be quite high...??

    Way too high as well.

Thanks for constructive feedback and guidance. Any other feedback, pl. don't hold back.

send me a message and I can have an English-speaking Thai call you. He does beautiful work.

  5. I am heading to Penang to get a 60 day tourist visa next week.

How is the embassy there on granting them now, and will they require a bank book, proof of living arrangements, a ticket out of Thailand, etc.?

Information on reasonable hotels and an agent to handle the work so that I will not have to travel to the Embassy twice would be helpful as well.

Anything else relevant will be welcome

    Thanks

  6. The poster who suggested that he go back to his foreign bank has about the best idea out there. The foreign bank will keep paper or digital records and be able to make a new form.

Also, he can request a print out of his account fro the time that he opened it.

A this may be very long, the bank may then ask about any specific dates he is interested in, and then he can have them print out the month which he brought the funds into the country.

The local bank may have to go to the head office somewhere to locate this, but that is a small price to pay.

    Best of luck.

  7. http://www.motorcycle.in.th/article.php/New-Powerful-Sportier-Scooter-from-Honda

New Powerful, Sportier Scooter from Honda

To tap the demand for more powerful gearless scooters, segment leader Honda are planning a bigger and sportier scooter for Southeast Asia. There is no confirmation as to when this scooter will make its appearance, but we expect it to be unveiled early next year.

The engine capacity of the new 'sportier' scooter will be between 125 and 150cc and the price will hover just above the current Honda PCX 125. It will be a premium scooter with a sporty design, like what we see in the maxi-scooter market.

Considering the whole background, we have a reason to believe that Honda might consider their successful Honda PCX 125 as the platform for this new sportier and more powerful scooter and the new scooter is to capture the high end of the scooter market.

We will keep you informed about more details as we learn about them. Overall, Honda Thailand has promised that it will introduce 13 new two-wheelers on that Thai motorcycle/scooter market...

  8. Foul! You don't know what they earn. I don't know what they earn. I do know I read in another reliable source which I can't mention that they are paid above average and that it is subsidized by the 10 percent service charge.

...... As I said, I do not know what they earn and even if they earn 10,000 baht / month, that still is not a lot to live on regardless of how many Thai citizens do live on it and often much less. I would still tip them just the same.

I am sorry, if a business says they are charging us a ten percent service charge, it is not our business to know the exact details of its disbursement.

.....Nor did I ask for the details. And, as I do not know, and after 21 years I have seen that it does not always go to the staff 100%, and even if in this case it may very well go to the staff, I would still add to it. 10% is a pretty cheap tip in my opinion.

If you normally tip 20 baht

.... I don't, and as I just tipped Service Charge = 10% and another 13% = 23% on a 750 baht bill, I am scratching my head as to where you would come up with this 20 baht amount for a tip on a meal directed at me.

which is a standard very acceptable and welcome typical tip in Thailand

    .....from whom?

and the service charge makes you pay 50 baht tip, why tip more?

.... in my case the service charge was 82? baht, and I added 115 more or less. The service was fine.

.....In your example, you did not state the amount of the bill when you noted the two amounts for 50 baht service charge and 20 baht tip. If the bill was near 500, and there was a 10% = 50 baht service charge and the service was really good, I would add another 40 / 50 baht or whatever rounded off well. I had no complaints about the service and no complaints about tipping. The problem at the place was the flavor of the food and its price for what was offered. I even liked the seats. :-)

I don't see that as punishing anyone. This isn't America. This is not a tip by cost of bill culture. The service charge forces that on customers. Fine, do what you want, but your guilt trip lectures are uncalled for.

...What "guilt trip" lectures? Why are you under the impression that anything I have written is a lecture?

I tip and I do not think any differently of anyone who tips more or less than me, and neither I nor anyone else tips the same all of the time.

If it makes you feel like Mr. Big to throw your money around and act the white man's burden by tipping way above the cultural standards here, good for you.

..... And if it doesn't? An extra hundred baht here and there is hardly throwing money around. White man's burden? I would tip the same in the USA as well.

It's your choice. Don't impose your values on others visiting and living in this foreign country though.

.... Imposing my values. I have yet to TELL anyone what they SHOULD do.

...The one thing I liked at the restaurant was the service, and I paid for it according to what I felt, and the salsas were very good, too.

There is no need to tip like an American in Thailand -- PERIOD.

...I have no idea why in this thread you are looking for ways to disagree with nearly everything I have written, even about something I liked, the service.

...I hope that you give the place a try, if you have not already done, and you are very happy with it.
