  1. Hi,

A month ago I bought a product from the US online and had it shipped. The cost was a bit over 1000 USD plus freight. Was told to pick it up at customs in Chiang Mai at the airport.

They told me that since the value of the product was more than, I think, 40 000 or 45 000 baht, some kind of import permit was needed? Anyway they agreed to let me have the product without it and just pay the normal fee plus VAT tax. About 20 % of the value I think it was.

Now I want to buy another item priced over 45 000 baht. Does anyone know what extra fees this involves? I dont have a business and dont have any kind of import permit.

    Thanks,

  2. We found this young dog, about 7-8 month old, running around scared in traffic. She is a golden retriever mix, and was about to be hit by several cars. She seemed to be looking for her owner, who was nowhere to be found.

I think she may have been owned by a westerner since she walks very well with a leash, and seems to want to enter our house. Possibly left behind, or possibly lost.

Very sweet temper, loves to cuddle and loves people. Golden retriever traits. We could not keep her as my dogs got jealous and bit her.

If you have lost her, or if you are interested in adopting her she can now be found at Santisook dog and cat rescue,

    More pics of her here:

    https://www.facebook.com/santisookdogandcatrescuefoundation/

She would do a lot better staying with people than staying with a bunch of dogs in a shelter. She is a people dog for sure.

She was found in area Ban To, Patan, north east of center, near the bridge that leads to Rimping MeeChok.

If you are interested contact them, the dogs name is "Nora".

  3. I think most vets can look after your dog while you are away. Dogs sick from parvo is very common. The smaller clinics could be cheaper, but the small animal hospital is usually reasonably priced.

Cheaper (and cheaper looking) vet clinics outside of center could help you with this, as parvo is common.

A friend of my GF had a dog with parvo that never got well even after hospital treatments, spending thousands of baht .

Then she bought a bottle of "Flying rabbit" for 40 baht and fed the dog, and it got better in a day. Some kind of med used for stomach ulcer.

Is there blood in the feces? Loosing blood and water seem to be the biggest factors of death. If it does not drink you can put some liquid or goat milk on the lips to make sure it gets a little liquid when it licks the lips.

  4. Coping with health problems I have learned that the most effective way to get vitamins and antioxidants is to include a lot of raw fruits, raw vegetables and berries in my diet.

"Doctors say that with a normal diet vitamins are not needed". Many doctors are uneducated about health, they just know a lot about disease. Very few people have a healthy diet, most often the diet is full of low quality cooking oil, too little or no vegetables, too little fruit. Processed foods.

Fish oil is another story. There was a study published that proved that 1 g per day does not provide enough to reduce the risk of heart problems. This is the one that the main stream media, and the doctors, have been pushing. There are several studies, some big, proving that more than 1 g per day clearly reduces the risk of heart disease.

  5. Loaded, I agree with you. But even if you fight tooth and claw, and look for different solutions sometimes you lose. Some diseases can be very painful, and there is always a limit to how much meds/herbs etc you can put in your body. Sometimes doing your best isnt enough, and people lose to their disease. If you know whats in store for the future, and you know it is extremely grim, a quick exit might be preferable.

  6. Citronella oil spray for sure, I use it on my dogs and it works well. They don't really like the smell, but neither does the mozzies. Many pharmacies have it, i just bought a bottle for 90 baht. No way the dogs will lick it, they dont like the smell.

Remember to give your dog heart worm meds regularly, very important. I think the mosquitoes spread it. Most thai dogs can take it, but not other breeds. They may die from it.

  7. Thai girlfriend wants to get an insurance, from her bank insurance company, that pays out in case I have a traffic accident etc.

Basically she said she would pay 2000 baht per year, and if I die in a traffic accident she would get 1.5 million baht. I ride my motorbike daily.

Now I dont think she will run me over, I am not too worried about that smile.png .

    But does this insurance exist?

We live together, and have done so for about 5 years, but we are not married.

Are the sales people telling lies to her? She has her own life insurance with the same bank insurance company.

  8. I think things will be back to normal within a year or two, after the election. Too much money will be lost like this, I think they are underestimating the amount of money these people spend in the tourism industry. For me, I just think Thailand will be a bit more boring than usual, a lot of younger people gone. Will be a bit like a geriatric ward.

It is quite insane for a tourist country like thailand to not let people who have the money to stay there without working, stay as long as they want.

  9. Thanks for the heads up.

Got stuff delivered to me about two weeks ago with iherb. Made an order with them a couple of days ago to Thailand but no answer from them yet.

I found this thai site which seems to have a lot of products: http://amino10.com/, probably more expensive though, all in thai but you can search for the product you want in the search window and they seem to have a lot. Have not used it yet so cant vouch for it.....

    Abstract

    BACKGROUND:

A single intake of monosodium glutamate (MSG) may cause headache and increased muscle sensitivity. We conducted a double-blinded, placebo-controlled, crossover study to examine the effect of repeated MSG intake on spontaneous pain, mechanical sensitivity of masticatory muscles, side effects, and blood pressure.

    METHODS:

Fourteen healthy subjects participated in 5 daily sessions for one week of MSG intake (150 mg/kg) or placebo (24 mg/kg NaCl) (randomized, double-blinded). Spontaneous pain, pressure pain thresholds and tolerance levels for the masseter and temporalis muscles, side effects, and blood pressure were evaluated before and 15, 30, and 50 min after MSG intake. Whole saliva samples were taken before and 30 min after MSG intake to assess glutamate concentrations.

    RESULTS:

Headache occurred in 8/14 subjects during MSG and 2/14 during placebo (P = 0.041). Salivary glutamateconcentrations on Day 5 were elevated significantly (P < 0.05). Pressure pain thresholds in masseter muscle were reduced byMSG on Day 2 and 5 (P < 0.05). Blood pressure was significantly elevated after MSG (P < 0.040).

    CONCLUSION:

In conclusion, MSG induced mechanical sensitization in masseter muscle and adverse effects such as headache and short-lasting blood pressure elevation for which tolerance did not develop over 5 days of MSG intake.

ssociation between monosodium glutamate intake and sleep-disordered breathing among Chinese adults with normal body weight.

Department of Nutrition and Foodborne Disease Prevention, Jiangsu Provincial Center for Disease Control and Prevention, Nanjing, China. [email protected]

    Abstract
    OBJECTIVE:

To assess whether monosodium glutamate (MSG) intake is associated with sleep-disordered breathing (SDB).

    METHODS:

Data from 1227 Chinese subjects who participated in the Jiangsu Nutrition Study were analyzed. All the participants were examined at two time points (baseline in 2002 and follow-up in 2007). The MSG intake was assessed quantitatively in 2002 and a sleep questionnaire was used to assess snoring and to construct an SDB probability score in 2007. Those within the fifth quintile of the score (highest) were defined as having a high probability of SDB.

    RESULTS:

The MSG intake was positively associated with snoring and a high probability of SDB in participants who had a normal body weight but in those who were overweight. A comparison of the extreme quartiles of MSG intake in subjects with a body mass index lower than 23 kg/m² showed an odds ratio of 2.02 (95% confidence interval 1.02-4.00) for snoring and an odds ratio of 3.11 (95% confidence interval 1.10-8.84) for a high probability of SDB. There was a joint effect between MSG and overweight in relation to SDB.

    CONCLUSION:

The intake of MSG may increase the risk of SDB in Chinese adults with a normal body weight.

The monosodium glutamate symptom complex: assessment in a double-blind, placebo-controlled, randomized study.
    Source

Department of Medicine, University of Ottawa, Ontario, Canada.

    Abstract
    BACKGROUND:

Considerable debate swirls about the validity of symptoms described by many people after ingestion ofmonosodium glutamate (MSG), and the question has remained unresolved largely because of a paucity of well-designed challenge studies.

    METHODS:

We conducted oral challenge studies in self-identified MSG-sensitive subjects to determine whether they had a statistically significant difference in the incidence of their specific symptoms after ingestion of MSG compared with placebo. First, 5 gm MSG or placebo was administered in random sequence in a double-blind fashion. Subjects who reacted only to a single test agent then underwent rechallenge in random sequence in a double-blind fashion with placebo and 1.25, 2.5, and 5 gm MSG. A positive response to challenge was defined as the reproduction of > of 2 of the specific symptoms in a subject ascertained on prechallenge interview.

    RESULTS:

Sixty-one subjects entered the study. On initial challenge, 18 (29.5%) responded to neither MSG nor placebo, 6 (9.8%) to both, 15 (24.6%) to placebo, and 22 (36.1%) to MSG (p = 0.324). Total and average severity of symptoms after ingestion of MSG (374 and 80) were greater than respective values after placebo ingestion (232 and 56; p = 0.026 and 0.018, respectively). Rechallenge revealed an apparent threshold dose for reactivity of 2.5 gm MSG. Headache (p < 0.023), muscle tightness (p < 0.004), numbness/tingling (p < 0.007), general weakness (p < 0.040), and flushing (p < 0.016) occurred more frequently after MSG than placebo ingestion.

    CONCLUSIONS:

Oral challenge with MSG reproduced symptoms in alleged sensitive persons. The mechanism of the reaction remains unknown, but symptom characteristics do not support an IgE-mediated mechanism. According to Food and Drug Administration recommendations, the symptoms, originally called the Chinese restaurant syndrome, are better referred to as the MSG symptom complex.

Monosodium glutamate (MSG) intake is associated with the prevalence of metabolic syndrome in a rural Thai population.
    Source

Department of Biochemistry, Faculty of Medicine, Khon Kaen University, Khon Kaen, 40002, Thailand. [email protected].

    Abstract
    BACKGROUND:

Epidemiology and animal models suggest that dietary monosodium glutamate (MSG) may contribute to the onset of obesity and the metabolic syndrome.

    METHODS:

Families (n = 324) from a rural area of Thailand were selected and provided MSG as the sole source for the use in meal preparation for 10 days. Three hundred forty-nine subjects aged 35-55 years completed the study and were evaluated for energy and nutrient intake, physical activity, and tobacco smoking. The prevalence of overweight and obesity (BMI ≥ 25 kg/m2), insulin resistance (HOMA-IR >3), and the metabolic syndrome (ATP III criteria) were evaluated according to the dailyMSG intake.

    RESULTS:

The prevalence of the metabolic syndrome was significantly higher in the tertile with the highest MSG intake. Further, every 1 g increase in MSG intake significantly increased the risk of having the metabolic syndrome (odds ratio 1.14, 95% confidence interval-CI- 1.12 - 1.28) or being overweight (odds ratio 1.16, 95% CI 1.04 - 1.29), independent of the total energy intake and the level of physical activity.

    CONCLUSION:

Higher amounts of individual MSG consumption are associated with the risk of having the metabolic syndrome and being overweight independent of other major determinants.

  11. You might try googling for an image of the asian giant hornet. It just so happens there as an article today somewhere (maybe nbc.com?) about people in China being killed by these things. Whether it's the same species as the hornet or wasp besetting your property, without a photo, it's hard to say.

I think it's appropriate to add an image.. Is this the one?

    IMG_3344.jpg

That could very well be it but the one in the garden looks a bit more full-bodied but that might just be the angle. Looks a bit like this

    v-mandarinia1.gif

But with one yellow stripe on the middle.

Cant do it myself though, I might set the whole area on fire....Ill ask around the neighborhood. Ill keep my dogs out of harms way when they exterminate too, the bugs might be very pissed off.

    Thank you

  12. How do I get rid of these things? They are very long, 3-4 times as long as a normal wasp, black with an orange stripe on the middle. My GF calls them "Dtua Dtor" and says when they attack they take a big bite out of you and are very poisonous, children and elderly can die. Are they aggressive though? Is there pest control or something like that in Chiang Mai that can remove the nest for me? Could I do it myself?

There dont appear to be very many of them, the nest is inside or just outside a tree in my bushes.

  13. Thanks, got it working now.

You have to select the series you want and then click on the episode you want to play. DO NOT click on the watch or watch now links.....

Really cool site, but as always have to be careful where you click, these sites are like minefields of malware.
