  1. no script is an add-on to Firefox ('tools' > 'Add-ons' > 'Get Add-ons'. It stops programs running on your computer that you haven't given permission to (either temporarily or permanently), that stem from websites. Some of these programs would not be evident to you, and some of them may be spyware or worse. I didn't have the patience to give permissions every time I visited a website and sometimes some of the programs that were running were unknown to me and I didn't have the desire to look them up on the web. (Always many Google programs, probably tracking me). So I got rid of it. Give it a go.

There is also Flashblock, that stops automatically those horrible animated, flashing ads that you can't get rid of, but unfortunately also blocks my BBC internet radio. (have to give permission every time). Try it.

  2. if you kid insist on sticking a screwdriver into the electrical socket, you 'it 'im. If he hits his youger brother, you let him know wh^wt it feels like. I 'it 'em both maybe 5 times in total. Last time was when the older one was drunk and decided to try it on. Just stay rational about it, never hit your wife (unless she hits you first) as you will find out that the next time, it's easier.

  3. yes, I decided to avoid Chiang Mai for this reason, in the 'smoky season'. I read somewhere that the pollution in Bangkok kills off any pollen that might cause an allergy..

anyway, I think I'll just take enough medication for a week or two and trust to Thai pharmacists, I guess I'll be ok. Thanks

  4. You create it all .... one of my favorite expressions , These rude behavior threads always amaze me because things like this never happen to me , and plenty of other people in the world , why ? Because people don't act rudely to people who are friendly to them , or behave in a manner that makes them look stupid for doing it.

Personally I am never in such a hurry that I would even care and would have to assume that the person who tried to cut the line (pretty middle school anyhow) probabbly is in a hurry , and being the nice person I am would gladly wait the extra time as my good deed for the day as opposed to being offended over it or making it such an important issiue in my life I needed to discuss it on a website. why ? Because since I create the way others treat me, all the other people in the line would recognise that I am a nice person and treat me accordingly in the future.

Most people who would politely listen to your rant about what a bad person the line cutter was would actually go away thinking you were a petty person they wouldn't want as a friend , not agree how agregious is was and ask for your phone number to have luch later. Do people really want friends that would intentionally make someone miss their plane who was flustered and in such a hurry they forgot to ask them if going to the front of the line is ok with everyone in the line so they don't miss the plane or do they want friends that don't ?

sorry, I can't follow, I would never push in front without asking (and never have) and can't see why I should put up with it from others.

  5. Dogs get poisoned the night before, leading to more distress. Hit the guy sideways in the knee with something like a baseball bat, not particularly hard, and he will go down. However winning a serious, unrefereed fight has a lot to do with luck / bad luck, so think twice about getting into physical contact. Better is to have alarms, flashing lights and CCTV.

The insect killer sounds like a good option.

  6. My Isaan wife (two years school, speaks Thai, Lao and very good English) thinks that I should learn Thai just for the pleasure of understanding the remarks made when I go near a group of village ladies (market or what ever). One lady made, with some emphasis, a remark that I repeated, much to the amusement of the ladies present and my wife. Walking past her home the next day I made the remark again, not understanding it, and the jovial ambiance in that house cooled dramatically. Very rude indeed. That is motivation enough for me to learn Thai and not let people know that I understand, coming along nicely.

I definitely won't repeat a family story about a rich great aunt of mine that was rich and deaf until she got her ears cleaned out. Over the next month or two, not having let on that she could hear, she made several changes to her will.

  7. Anyways, as I was getting closer to get in, there was an Indian/Paki looking guy trying to jump the line ahead but nowhere near me. The conversation I overheard was, basically he was told to get to the end of line to which he replied, my flight is leaving in 5 min.

I wonder at the outcome had he been a 6' 5" Maori weighing 130Kgs ?

yes indeed. I have always let people in front that have shown their ticket and asked POLITELY if they can take my place. It's the not asking that guarantees that they WILL miss their plane if they try that with me. (Big tough guy that I am).

  8. Hi,

At present I take Axotide 100 (Corticosteroid) regularly + Ventolin when things get bad. Do these names mean anything to fellow sufferers in Thailand? I ask because I don't fancy taking a year's supply with me, cost a fortune.

What do you guys take on a regular basis? I took a long time to find a medication that suited me and am reluctant to change but of course will do so if necessary.

As a secondary question, do you feel better in Thailand with your asthma? I have been visiting for years but always in the dry season, so am not too aware of how I will feel when it starts to rain.

    Thanks for any replies.

  9. You should try shopping in Hong Kong. OMG! One would think pushing to the front of a queue was an irrepressible cultural characteristic of the HK citizenry. As well as rushing to the front of the aircraft for deplaning even before seatbelt signs are released.

yeah I love it when everyone gets up when the plane lands and stays immobile for 10 minutes. We all get on the same bus anyway. We stay sat, get off the plane last, get on the bus last, meaning we get off the bus first. This aspect of human behaviour has been puzzling me since I started to 'think'.

  10. Happened to me at an airport two days ago and I said 'excuse me' in a very much not apologetic (ie loud) fashion and plonked my lovable body in front of the guys. I later regretted this as they turned out to be people that were about to miss their train (they did). One word from them would have given them priority.

They were a nice Australian couple, not Thais, happens everywhere.

  11. ...reading through this thread for the first time I get the impression that the question of land rights is maybe not quite as clear cut as the OP's wife makes out.

Secondly, maybe a declaration that you have to go home for family matters for two weeks, then quite simply not coming back and waiting to see what reaction you get is one possibility? That's what I feel I would do any way.

  12. If I had something to complain about concerning 'resident status' it would be about the fact that when newbies ask questions about Thailand, veteran TV members answer as if everyone lives in Bangkok or Pattaya. You may occasionally get a remark like 'it may be different upcountry'. Telling people that they will need $2000.- a month to live in Thailand (for instance) is just ridiculous, in Buriram I can only dream of having so much and I live very well. I think my profile shows 'in Switzerland as yet'. To tell the whole story would take a paragraph.

so if someone were to ask you the cost of living in switzerland, you would give them the costs of living in one of the major urban centres or choose a rural backwater?

Let's try and stay calm, shall we? The question is, how much does it cost to live in Thailand? Not, how much it is to live in Bangkok? Nobody answers this kind of question with 'well, here in Bangkok (probably the most expensive place to live in Thailand) it costs...

Same if you ask me about Switzerland, I think Geneva is one of the most expensive cities in the world, I wouldn't blithely quote costs for Geneva and not mention that you can live very well in the countryside (we don't have many rural backwaters here) for much less.

  14. I'm amazed that no one has suggested that the OP should get a liver panel done. If you cannot tolerate alcohol it's very likely you're liver is starting to show signs of alcohol abuse.

As Sheryl said, it's a poison that you're liver must breakdown and eliminate.

As a drinker you need to get GGT checked too, which is not usually included in the standard bundle of liver tests because it costs a bit more.

Check GGT, AST, ALT, bilirubin (total and direct), ALP, total protein, Albumin and Globulin.

I wouldn't hurt to get Kidney function tested while you're at it.

    Good luck.

In my post number 12 I suggested that loss of tolerance to alcohol is caused by your liver going to hell. Most of the comments have just been nervously joking avoidances of the truth: time to stop.

  15. Halcyon, that is a bout as good a post as I've ever seen on the subject. I my case, and I imagine that of many others, is that the roof space isn't readily accessible so I would hesitate to put a fan up there. I will probably going for 'whirlygigs' which apparently are quite efficient.

Thanks Cooked. I suppose by that you mean the roof over there are sloped without much roof space between ceiling and roof?

I have two 14" whirlygigs on pitched roof. It deals with convective heat ok. There's a breeze current coming into the room if the window is opened. However, it won't stop the heat baking down through the ceiling board above. When it rains with strong wind, the rain infiltrates the roofspace and onto the ceilling board which then rots. I have replaced a few of the rotted plywood ones with that made of gypsum.

Access to the roof space in my case is difficult from beneath because there is a layer of insulation above the ceiling. This method of access is also unpleasant because it is HOT up there.

I can 'easily' remove the roof, but in the case of a fan stopping working in the rainy season I don't think so...
