  1. When should people start think about consequences here. Overloading the truck gives much higher maintenance costs on the equipment. The overloaded trucks destroys the roads, for the public's annoyance, and giving the government unexpected maintenance costs on the roads. Its a win-win for all parts in the long run to start to follow the rules. Increased safety as well, as an overloaded truck will have much longer braking distance..

It's not just overloaded trucks the destroy the roads. Up here in the boonies we have a lovely new recently widened road. It's been finished just over one year. It's literally falling apart as the new sections have no hardcore or base aggregate. Simply tarmac on soil. Imagine how long that lasts in rainy season. It's a very dangerous road now with the outside lanes are unusable. I bet the contractor on that job got a nice new pickup and a few rai of land somewhere.

  2. Excellent post

Just confirms my long standing opinion that in order to survive human societies must exercise much more stringent control on procreation. We as a society have deemed the rights to drive, buy firearms, or sell alcohol as consequential enough activities to place them under state licensing schemes. But none of these come even close to the seriousness and impact of creating another member of the society. This applies all over the world, not just Thailand. Any moron can can make a baby and the rest of us have no say in it even though we end up paying the price.

Unfortunately this stance has so much historical bad baggage that no politician will touch it with a 20 foot pole at our collective peril. In the historical world of the perceived unlimited resources and high mortality the need to replenish the numbers was enshrined into traditions and religion. That is why we all have been indoctrinated that making more babies and saving lives at all costs is a virtue. That world does not exist any more. I half jokengly refer to the agent Smith's monologue from the first Matrix movie. (paraphrasing) "... humans are really not mammals because all mammalian species arrive at the balance between their numbers and the environment, but not humans. Humans enter an ecosystem and begin to multiply until all of natural resources are consumed. There's only one other species that behaves that way, it's a virus."

I'm sure its over-dramatized and arguable, but the gist is valid.

Using our big brains and resulting technology we managed to subvert the mechanism of natural selection without replacing it with anything. The fact that medically assisted suicide is still illegal in most of the world is the testament to how shortsighted we are. The resources are dwindling while the populations are exploding. This is not sustainable. The only logical solution is to control the populations. Unfortunately this and all of the other environmental concerns will go unaddressed in the blind pursuit of the GNP growth and "saving lives". The change would require a fundamental rethink of our values, which is not possible until the reality hits us in the face. But by then it's too late. The planet will go on, and in time will recover but it will be without us on it.

  3. As the immensely proud father of a beautiful 11 month old daughter, reading this article has brought me close to tears. To think this child, on the cusp of life, was cruelty murdered for entirely selfish short-term gain by of all people, her mother. The one person above all other who should have protected her from harm. The mother is clearly not very bright. Had she she thought the situation through during the 7 or 8 months she'd have known about the pregnancy, she could have put the baby up for adoption. She' have probably been paid for the baby. Money is clearly more important to her then the life of her child. Just as an example I know many Farhang/Thai couples who would love a child but very often the man has been vasectomised. This child could have had a wonderful life with loving parents and the vile mother would probably been paid a substantial sum of money for her unwanted child.

I a non-believer but if there is an after life, I hope she burns in the fires of eternal damnation.

    Make the bitch suffer!

    RIP little darling

  4. I used the rail link shortly after it fist opened. After 13 hours of flying cattle class and a 4 hour stop over in the Gulf I was looking forward to a nice train ride and avoiding the perils of a Bangkok taxi. But what a disappointment when I got to Makkasan Station, virtually no sinage, miles to walk, tumble weed rolling around the place. Then no taxi to take me the couple of km or so to my hotel on Sukhumwit Road. But look on the bright side; this was still pure luxury compared to dragging luggage around the London Underground! :D

  5. Just an observation from someone who, as yet, hasn’t even been to Phuket; and to be honest I don’t much fancy the place having been to Koh Samui and Pattaya. Far too many Farhangs in these places for my liking.

Thai’s are not renowned for ability to look ahead. This is apparent even with their driving. If they did look ahead they’d see what is happening with their neighbour on that side of Thailand: Myanmar. At some point in the foreseeable future the military Junta in Myanmar is going to collapse. Or more likely bugger off with the money from all the state owned assets they’re busily selling off. Once this happens the country will open up to the world for business, much like land-locked Laos (try saying that after a few beers!) did just over a decade ago. However, unlike Laos, Myanmar has close on 2000 kilometres of beautiful and so-far unspoilt coast line along the Andaman Sea and the Bay of Bengal. When this happens Phuket and Thailand in general may find it has to compete a little harder to get tourist money to flow into the country with all the negative publicity the world sees. As tourism is such an important source of income to Thailand maybe time for someone higher up the food chain to make the changes now before the reputation of this beautiful country I call home is tarnished beyond repair.

  6. So "Around 12 Thai men" turns into 2 farang.

    Smells fishy to me.....

I'm surprised that soo many of you have jumped onto the bandwagon of instantly condemning them, even though the details are soo inconsistent with yesterdays article.

Take into account how quickly the police found and tracked them down, in comparison to similar cases, and I'm thinking there's definitely something fishy going on

Yeah, my thoughts exactly. In just 24 hours 12 Thai men (as seen by several witnesses) become 2 Farrhangs. And those 2 Farrhangs are so dumb they leave a perfect trail of clues and perfetly preserved evidence to lead the BiB straight to they're door! Every coppers dream case!
