Frozen in time: British expats losing out on pensions in Thailand
theblether replied to webfact's topic in Thailand News
It's long been my opinion this is the preferable way of life for British pensioners. Summer in the UK, winter in Thailand. Maintain your pension rights, access the NHS, etc Get the best of all worlds. Why not? -
Frozen in time: British expats losing out on pensions in Thailand

You are living the future already. The rich will gather all resources unto themselves. To hell with the poor. And even then we'll expats on 80,000 baht a month income lining up for treatment at government hospitals - knocking poor Thais even further back. I think in that article a guy says " things are tight on 80,000 baht a month." Dear me - tell that to your average Thai. Terrible. -

Also, I'm not saying lengthy waits don't exist. The one thing that has already kicked in for the UK, and Thailand will be worse, is that there just aren't enough youngsters available. The birth rate has more than halved in Thailand. Crisis stages soon worldwide. -

My sister is a senior NHS HR manager. Here's the problem. Overseas private hospitals are offering funny money. I know a 35 yo cardiac surgeon who has taken a job at USD650,000 basic in California. One well known former member of this forum has just been hired to an overseas contract paying 450% more than the NHS rate - How do we stop these specialists from being headhunted? -

I've always thought the Australian rule that you need to live their for the final two years before pension age was brutal. But don't tell my Brit OAP's. They live feeling hard done by, don't burst their bubble. -

My dad is just out of hospital today. Picked up by ambulance within twenty minutes and a seven day stay. The NHS is not the basketcase people are making out. -

A firefighter retiring this year with 30 years service will have well in excess of 100,000 baht income combined. Their service pension is index linked. The article is a joke, trolling stupidity. -

Did you see the one where the 54 year old said they wanted to live in Thailand to be closer to their Australian family. By the time they found out there was a pension freeze it was "too late to change their plans." Aye, thirteen years before your pension kicks in isn't enough notice 5555 Utterly absurd- 576 replies

Better illegal immigrants that contribute than sour faced pensioners that want to live abroad and slate the UK every day. Plenty of them. Just come home.- 576 replies

Frozen in time: British expats losing out on pensions in Thailand

Give it a rest. This has been the rule since the majority of pensioners were born. There is zero chance the UK is going to update 490,000 pensions for people in this position. Especially after means testing winter allowances. Just give it a rest. ps - I note an article quoting people in their fifties moaning about the pensions freeze. They don't even qualify for the pension for over a decade and they have started greeting already. Dear me.- 576 replies

People forget to include intangible costings when living in Thailand. For example, Brits: For your average Brit access to the NHS is worth a minimum of 100,000 baht a year. Access to language comprehension - roughly the same. Access to a life governed by the rule of law, roughly the same. Access to a legal system that gives you true ownership rights - probably worth 2 million baht to most Brits ( lump sum ). There is no compelling reason why you need to lose every penny you transfer to Thailand. It's just the way the system is set against you. We can argue the nominal values but people who have experienced wild medical bills, consistent rip-offs and unfair legal targeting will be nodding in agreement. And, of course, the ongoing annual begathon to prove that you should be permitted to continue living with your Thai family - how much is your peace of mind worth? It's small-minded, low-IQ thinking to know the price of everything and the VALUE of nothing. And those of you heading for the airports due to regulations changing yet again will know exactly what I am talking about.

Harris holds 7-point lead over Trump in national survey
theblether replied to Inderpland's topic in Political Soapbox
That's not what I said. I clearly mentioned that the size of the sample is relevant. I then said the problem was concentrating on one demographic. I don't know what you are trying to achieve here. Maybe you are just lonely. Go adopt a street dog and get a life. -

It wasn't behind a paywall for me but hey, try google - there's plenty of free sources for the same story out there. You'll even read reports on <removed> websites. You'll know where to find them, eh? Carry on. -

DWP in the UK new powers from January 2025
theblether replied to nong38's topic in Home Country Forum
DWP is not starting with OAP, this article lists where they are expected to start - with universal credit being the main driver. Note the housing benefit mentioned. There was a famous case of a guy who sublet his council flat for TEN YEARS while living on Samui. Housing benefit paid his rent and he pocketed the rental income from a private renter. Surely none of you are doing that? https://uk.news.yahoo.com/dwp-set-check-bank-accounts-184020666.html -
Gordon Gecko famously said in the movie Wall Street "greed is good." Sometimes controlling your appetite for revenge is the better course. While he may lose the appeal against conviction, he'll almost certainly get the amount of the fine reduced. "A five-judge New York appellate panel questioned both the size and validity of a judgment of more than $450 million against Donald J. Trump at a hearing." https://www.nytimes.com/2024/09/26/nyregion/trump-civil-fraud-penalty-appeals-court.html

In my experience, just more traditional in outlook. Your average Eastern European woman looks at Western women with contempt and can't believe woke is a thing. I know many and I've heard them talking. But remember, they all either lived through the deprivations of communism or their parents did. They have a different world outlook for that reason. Even they might change within a generation or two.

Isolation and loneliness have always been bedfellows of aging. These days it's getting worse as so many people have chosen to be childless. The number of women over the age of thirty in the USA has crossed the 50% mark. This has never happened before in human history. I'll repeat that - This has never happened before in human history. Astounding. The effects of the Age of Isolation have already started. The second half of this century will be a catastrophe as literally you'll pick up the phone and no one will be there to help you. Four hour waits for ambulances are now the norm, two weeks to see a GP. The rich will be fine, they'll use their resources to capture the market. Your average Westerner won't be fine.

Harris holds 7-point lead over Trump in national survey
theblether replied to Inderpland's topic in Political Soapbox
I don't understand random sampling? Utter garbage. I pointed out this was not a random sample as it concentrated on one demographic, the polar opposite of random. -
Harris holds 7-point lead over Trump in national survey
theblether replied to Inderpland's topic in Political Soapbox
You'd need to be touched in the head to believe any poll, ESPECIALLY national polls, which are totally irrelevant. The only poll of ( some ) relevance was the Teamsters poll, that had Trump on 56%. The reason it had ( some ) relevance was that the sample size was gigantic, over 20,000 targeted respondents. At that point pollsters accept that the statistical variation vanishes. Only organisations such as the Teamsters could run a poll of that magnitude, regular pollsters can't afford the manpower required. Here's the downside - it samples only a certain category of American society. The Teamsters are working class dominated so that skews results.
