Actually all normal European chainsaw brands are available in Chinatown Bangkok.   I was quoted 8,000 baht for a Stihl with a 12 inch bar 2 weeks ago.   I was also led to understand that "larger bars and longer chains" are also for sale in "other" locations!

A 12in bar is perfect for trimming our fruit trees and no I do not want to become an illegal lumberjack.   I also do not want any of my staff to do any moonlighting and the saw will go back to Bangkok with me after the weekend.

What exact part of Chinatown sells them...  i want to buy a proper one, not Chinese rubbish...

It would depend on where you live in Thailand.

    From BKK to HCMC, Vietnam

7am Air Asia from DMK to HCMC. Take taxi to from the airport (use Vinasun or Mai Linh) to the consulate and put the application in.

Pick up passport next day in the afternoon from the consulate and fly back Air Asia to DMK around 9pm.

A hand written letter from wife requesting the visa is required otherwise it's the same as Savanakhet.

There are recent reports from thai visa members confirming the rules are unchanged there.

Correct... I got a Non O back in July in HCM with what you stated above...

I had a closer look today at Friendship and EVERY wine and they have a lot in there, either boxed or bottled, had blue tax stamps. Definitely also plenty of wines that have fruit wine marked on the box.

Orange and green tax stamps were on the bottles of spirit.\

So clearly the writer of the article Craig linked to is another armchair expert. There are a lot of them on the internet.

Well Leo.  The blue / orange tax sticker tax issue was published / discussed in the Big Chilli Magazine years ago...

The government is renowned for changing things at the drop of a hat.....

Grape juice is juice, not wine.

If they add grape juice to wine, the result is 100% made from grapes.... but it is not wine, it is fruit wine.

Personally I do not care, as long as the result tastes good enough, and is not too expensive.

Legally speaking it is however unacceptable to call it wine.

That's why it is labelled as Fruit Wine. Sometimes it's in large print and on others it's very small fonts.  Importers being sneaky.....

So fruit wine has a orange sticker and unaltered wine a blue sticker.

Sorry but you couldn't be more wrong.

The below product goes for 215 Bt/2.25 liter at frienship Pattaya and has clearly written on the box " based on wine". It's 10% alcohol and tastes fine.

    Notice the blue sticker?

No, Passport will be checked for sure.  Bus!!

Obviously you haven't lived or flown much in this country.

In the past 13 years I have only used my thai DL for check in without any problems,  same with hotels.

If you don't have a local DL, then of course you don't have any choice but to use your passport.

And airline staff are only looking at the ID page, they aren't immigration officers and couldn't give 2 hoots whether you are on overstay or not...

typically, and my friend went through this, the GF is being coached by friends, family etc.  I don't have a big problem with her looking out for herself or her family as is often very typical.  But to just go buy a house, of which you will have basically no legal rights to live in, or sell if you want?  One sided contracts rarely are good things.  There are so many bad scenarios where you get kicked out of the house, one allegation to the local authorities that you "beat or abused her" and at the very least you are out the property is an example.  The suggestion that you buy a condo or lease a condo sounds like a better idea to me.  Of course that can be a bit difficult if you are talking really rural country Issan.

The girl is from down south, not Issân.  Maybe not as shrewd..!!!

  8. Many Thai men blow their money on gambling ,booze and cheap hookers basically the same as lower working class people in the west.

Thai women spend it all on expensive skin creams, handbags and cell phones.

The army is clamping down on street loan sharks. Indians who have been here for years are threatened with deportation if they contunue with the 20% daily interest scam.

Indians? In my experience, it has all been Thais.

In Bangkok from Sukhumvit and Silom its controlled by Indian Thai's but the collectors are Indians.

Yep. There is even indians out the nakhon nayok road now collecting too. Never seen this before in 8 years

  9. If the money is all legal, you can simply go to your bank, fill one paper and that is it

Apparently not. Whenever I have sent funds abroad, I can only do so if I produce an invoice for the overseas company that has provided me with a product or service.

In this case, I want to send funds to an overseas bank account ==> no invoice ==> no can send, according to the Thai bank.

You can also send money as "family support" and you need nothing but the account number/name.... although when i have done it in the past they wanted to see a WP and the added advantage here is you can remit to your own account elsewhere as they would expect the family name to be the same wink.png

You can send up to US$25,000 to a family support a/c without providing any additional paperwork

  10. I have 2 friends that I met through work 24 years ago.

    They were both educated overseas.

We catch up from time to time.

They are financially better off than me, so money is not the issue.

We enjoy our friendship whether it's golfing or family get togethers.

Couldn't ask for 2 better friends. Then I have my western friends who I play sport with.

  11. Kilometer 116-117 is SOUTH of Laem Chabang. Hardly what I would call the Bangkok Chon Buri motorway. In fact, that is right at the old exit to Pattaya, before they finished the extention into Pattaya.

And yes, that area is in something of a hollow.

.....and what would you call it , since Bangkok-Chonburi motorway does not meet your fancy. Perhaps the WhizBang motorway would be better for you. I believe the nit has been picked !

    Chonburi - Pattaya bypass road..???

  12. is it also not possible with a non-Immigrant O or B visa to do the 90 -day border run ?

If you have a Non B, you only have to report every 90 days if you are still in the country. If you are out on business / leisure before 90 days occurs, you will never have to report at all.

Not sure on the O visa though.

No if your on an extension of stay you report every 90 days which is not a B visa someone with only a B visa will be required to visa run every 90 days

Wrong. If you have a Non B, you don't have to do visa runs.

The rules nowadays is you need to report every 90 days if staying in the country. Last century this rule didnt exist.

If going out of the country before the 90 days is no problem as long as you have a Re-Entry Permit when you come back in, so your visa isn't cancelled.

    No problems in 20+ years

  13. is it also not possible with a non-Immigrant O or B visa to do the 90 -day border run ?

If you have a Non B, you only have to report every 90 days if you are still in the country (U don't have to do border runs with a Non B).

If you are out on business / leisure before 90 days occurs, you will never have to report at all.

Not sure on the O visa though.

  14. Is it just me, or is this somewhat confusing?

The DNA on the hoe would most likely be the victims,no?

The article seems to insinuate there is unknown DNA on it,

yet it doesnt go as far as to say the DNA doesnt belong to the victims either.

It also doesnt state that the DNA was sourced from blood or otherwise

Logic would have it, if the DNA wasnt blood based, it could be DNA from the gardener or anyone that used the hoe for gardening or whatever innocent purpose.

But surely they would already have taken the DNA of the gardener to exclude from the evidence pool?

if you READ one report it said DNA of two males found on the hoe, neither of which were the defendants. One could be the gardener. I doubt anyone took his DNA.

I would suggest that if either of the defendants DNA had handled the murder weapon, their DNA could also have been on it.

Stephen the exertion needed to swing that how around would in my opinion mean the full profile was of the killer was transferred. The partial could well be from an individual not connected. But nobody can convince me you can haul that hoe around beating 2 people to death over a sustained amount of time and NOT transfer DNA to it. It beggars belief some people can even consider that a possibility.

    Unless they were wearing gloves..???

  15. Did you bother to learn any Thai during your two years there ? I moved to Hong Kong out of Uni. I took Chinese in College. Also went the IT / industrial automation route. Thailand is a mess and is pretty much the place where ambition goes to die. Most people in the region work in more dynamic places and use Thailand as a second home or did.

You really need to find a life's calling. Then you need to obtain skills that allow you to do what you want to do. The easiest language to learn is probably Malay which is also spoken in Indonesia. Indonesia will be the second largest economy in Asia.

There is a world food shortage, so if you have an interest in agriculture, that may be something to look into. There is a bit o tech in farming these days as well.

If you apply yourself, look further afield than Thailand toward its neighbors, you will fair better.

Yes I did learn Thai for 2 years so can speak it to an intermediate level I would say. I am continuing to study it now in the UK but just on my own and with my girlfriend. I am also learning how to read and wright it better.

Thanks for the advice and I will look onto other countries in the area.

I think you should brush up on your grammar and spelling first before you apply for any jobs...

  16. If you didn't read the link that craigt3365 attached

Fruit wine has an orange tax sticker on it. And it does say in very small writing on the back label, Fruit Wine

Unaltered wine has a blue sticker over the cap

I've tried the Mar Sol wines, not bad either

    Each to there own

  17. Villa Market. THB 899. So 5 litres means 180 baht a litre.

Its pretty vile but so is all wines imported with fruit juice added to avoid tax.For diabetics its full of sugar.

By the way its a "cask" not a "box" invented in Australia for selling cheap wine but now accepted by wine snobs and you can get some really good wines in a cask but not in Thailand.Decent wine in a bottle is 100% taxed.

Thailand could have a great wine industry, they need OS experts to come in and show them how to make it but "loss of face " seems to be a problem.

One producer of fruit wine in the north said to me "we know what we are doing " Sorry you don't

They do have some winemakers here from overseas or who have studied overseas

Thailands climate is a bit hot for making great wines
