Anything stamped in your passport?
-
I transferred 40k 4 years ago, the Bank here held onto the cash for a few days until the rate fell before putting into my account. It was actually exchanged when sent so they re exchanged it costing me 800 quid, they are a law unto themselves. Complaints fall on deaf ears.

Does the School begin with an S? I paid a private School in advance once and was told had 2 years to take lessons in. Started with a few then went again on next holiday a year later for more only to be told the time had run out- lost almost 6k. Once they have your money they don't care if you learn anything or not.

A case of I'm-a-big-man lone officer standing their ground? Can you not go through the agent method in Phuket, such as the likes of Assist in Chiang Mai where you pay for them to take care of the extension and all reports?
It seems they want people to use agents where a commission can be part of the deal..
However, for a simple report, it is ludicrous to pay thousands for someone to carry a form into an office.
I just paid 400 baht to an agent in Pattaya for 90 day report and only passport needed. No extra forms. Money well spent.
Agent must be laughing all the way to the bank, a days wages for handing over a form!

legally you have to apply for extensions yearly in person, having said that I know a Chinese national who gets a yearly visa from the Thai passport office, not joking.

Senseless, I have had to give 4 pp copies now for quite a time, last time it went to 5. I asked them if they did postal and they said 'not really' Online does not work for me but at least I can get the bus. Must be distressing if wheelchair bound. So how did you do it in the end? It might have been the information form that made a personal appearance needed?

Why would you wai someone when it's alien to your culture?
Because it's an essential part of the culture in which you're living? Try holding down a job here, putting kids through local schools, etc. without wai-ing. You'll do about as well as say, a Chinese guy in the UK who refuses to shake an outstretched hand because it's 'alien to his culture'. If you're just a tourist (even a multi-year one), not really participating in local life, then of course, ignore the whole custom if you like. I mean, why even try to adapt to your surroundings?
To the OP: your 'thank-you' wai was polite but optional, as was a wai in response. If you watch Thais at restaurants, for example, they usually return the 'greeting" wai when they enter, but often don't return the 'thank-you' one given when they walk out. So do it if you feel like it, or not. The only common situation I can think of in which initiating a wai isn't optional is when you enter someone's house. Thais cut farang a lot of slack on wai-ing, but most would find that a little weird and impolite.
You could say the same for wearing amulets, believing in ghosts, driving while drunk and cheating on the mrs, all part of the culture. Thing is not all aspects of a culture deserve respect and grovelling, which i consider wai ing to be neither deserves to be respected or followed. Not the same as shaking hands at all, wai ing denotes superiority and inferiority, and that is bad.

Wai ing is just supporting the hierarchical and outdated social structure, OK if Thais want to do it but i'd rather not be part of it myself. These days I hold a hand up in recognition but do not wai and never a public servant. All this feudal kow towing should not be encouraged and I try to stop Thai kids doing it to me at least. I like people to be treated as equals and not upper and lower class just cos they are older, richer or have some 'respectable' job.

when people say 24 they are referring to the dollar, not the pound

Why the constant fascination with "how long have you lived here", it is not a contest!
Of course it is, always is. Here is this weeks winner, does he get 2 nights in Pattaya?

I first came here (by train from Singapore) in 1957.
I came back to live here in 1991.... and reach the 25 year mark next month.

200 baht for postage a normal letter cost 3 baht last time I sent one
They send it by EMS (about 40 baht) as was mentioned in the OP. I guess you could insist on them sending it by normal post if you wanted to.
So they overcharge by 160 baht. They can actually do it while you wait as they did for me, no money in that though

Told by one officer they did not do extension and go to Suan Phlu Bkk when I did not live in Bkk, and they did do extensions, no problem
Asked for 4 then 5 copies of pp for 90 day extensions, no problem
Told need every page of PP copied even blank one for extension one year, then not the next, no problem
One officer told my mrs she did not know how she could live with a foreigner, no problem
Given forms all in Thai to sign when going for extension, no problem
Fill in info about foreigner form last time, no problem
Often asked, 'why you stay Thailand' by officials, no problem
-I know my place

postage tamadar is 3 baht, did you get a receipt ? it would not be anything like 200 by EMS. I got one of these certs at samut prakan while doing an extension, no wait and no charge, however I was told they are only valid for 6 months. Looks like you were involved in corruption.

Move to a moo baan in Thailand. It's quiet here.
Apart from barking dogs day and night, people playing music from speakers outside their houses, angle grinders seemingly never ending, bikes left with motors on for 15 minutes before people actually ride off, dozens of vendors with annoying recorded messages over speakers up and down. Then there are the TV's for some reason stuck on full volume all the time so you can hear them in the street, and of course the residents committee making announcements over speakers, when they are not dipping into the community funds of course.

The most essential thing to have in an uncivilized dump like Thailand is good ear plugs.
