Randy California, when he was with Spirit, recorded I Got A Line On You, found on their '68 The Family That Plays Together album. He was quite an accomplished guitarist and had Jimi Hendrix' respect. Unlike so many rock stars who died young due to drugs California drowned in the Pacific Ocean in '97 at the age of 45 while rescuing his 12-year-old son, Quinn, from a rip current near his mother's home at Molokai, Hawaii. He managed to push Quinn (who survived) toward the shore. Randy went straight to Heaven and was saluted as he walked through the Pearly Gates. -

Playing For Change puts out some awesome music. That must have taken a lot of work to arrange that song given all of the various artists. An crack up effort. Ben E. King among many others playing his '61 hit classic Stand By Me in Caritiba, Brazil in October 2014, shortly before Ben E. King's death on April 30, 2015. -

Texas Songster Mance Lipscomb (1895-1976) plays and sings his rendition of this blues standard, Black Water Blues, written and introduced by Bessie Smith in 1927 and subsequently performed by countless others. While some live recordings of Mance's take on it have surfaced online, this recording—which originated from Mance's first field recording sessions with Chris Strachwitz and Mack McCormick at his home in Navasota, Texas, on August 13, 1960—was published only on Arhoolie's 1961 anthology 'Blues 'n Trouble' (Arhoolie F1006) and appears to be one of Mance's few Arhoolie recordings never reissued in digital format. -

More great Americana music from Tipper's Wholesome Hour . . . The Carter Family performing Wildwood Flower at the Grand Ole Opry. My memories are more than a bit sparse during the late 50's. But one thing I do remember from back then is learning to whistle. -

Peter, Paul & Mary with 500 Miles off of their '62 self-tilted debut album. This was part of our repertoire in music class during my middle school years. Imagine that . . . music class for 12~14 year olds. Nowadays? Nah, I won't go there. -

Jesse Winchester with The Brand New Tennessee Waltz, co-written with Robbie Robertson. Also off of his '70 debut album. Tennessee is a beautiful state, especially during the autumn when it's stunningly vibrant with orange, red and yellow foliage everywhere you look. Birth home of President Andrew Jackson, who heroically killed America's second evil central bank. -
