I'm in a similar situation, but I wasn't aware of those extension options. I'm not married to my girlfriend, but we have a son together and my name is on his birth certificate. I'm currently on a 30 day exemption stamp - could anyone tell me what my options are?

Unfortunately, your name alone on your son's birth certificate will not lead the Thai authorities to recognize you as the legal father per se - there are however a number of steps you can take to become so, but you will need a lawyer, plus a couple of court appearances along with the full support of your child's Thai mother.

However despite this limitation, some Thai Consular Facilities in the region will grant you a single entry 90 day non immigrant 'O' visa on your producing said birth certificate with out the court papers and a registered legalisation.

You should also be able to apply for the 'one off' 60 day 'Visiting Thai Family' Extension at your local Thai immigration Dept.

In the longer term if you either legalise your Thai Parenthood, or formally marry your the Thai Mother of your child, then a larger range of options would be available for both One Year Multiple Entry Visas and/or One Year 'in country' Extensions of Permission to Stay.

As for the lawyer don't worry too much. The court will appoint you one for just 2500 Baht. Sessions are very easy and straight forward. can all be done in just 3-4 months. Don't forget that since you are not married you are not the legal father. Should anything happen to the mom while you are in Thailand the kid won't go to you but to the relatives at first. Than you will still have to court afterwards. So best to do it all now and get it over with.

  2. The three solutions I can think of are:

    1) have more input - spend weekends with your son, do activities, write daily schedules, get involved.

    2) ask the mother to take the son to childcare centers for structure - Bambi is very popular in Bangkok, they organize songs, games, play sessions, all very structured and controlled, just google them.

    3) International schools cater for kids as young as 2 - send your son there for the activities and structure you think he's missing. He'll have set meal times, nap times, play times etc which you think he needs.

    Thanks for this.

Options 2 and or 3 are EXACTLY what I am thinking. He just turned 2 yesterday and whilst i think this is too young I do feel it is far better than what is happening at home and what he needs is structure and routines in his day. He loves other kids and playing and so I am thinking this is the perfect solution.

Mother is not so keen on doing it so young (I see her point) but I will definietly put my foot down and insist. It seems the best solution when all things are considered.

    Thanks again for the suggestion.

Yeah, was in a simular situation. At 2 she went off to day care and all changed. Mom went back to work, kid in day care and all gucci.

  3. I once had my car parked in front of the house in a housing estate one evening. I heard a loud bang and noticed that my car was moved due to the crash as another car had driven in to it.

The person that hit it did a runner. I per sued him on my motorbike as I could not get my car to start. Caught up with him 2km down the road and made him come back which he did. Was steaming drunk! Took his ID card of him and dropped him of at his families house.

Went to the police station the next day with my car being towed and made a police report.

Despite the crash happening on a private housing estate the police and insurance were very friendly and helpful. Insurance paid for repairs to my car and collected money from the guy that caused it with no problems.

I don't see why you should have problems with that lady not coughing up the money for repairs as you have all proof and details.

  4. Cooling off period by law on signed contracts is 7 days. You are entitled to get your money back if there was a contract signed.

However if she did not sign any contract and purchased "good" as such for the amount of 20K but has not used all you should be entitled to your money minus what is used.

The sales are trained to say that you can NOT cancel. But by Thai law you have 7 days to cancel your contract.

Try and talk to them to cancel the agreement. If they don't listen just go and visit the consumer protection buro. Most likely there will be more complaints against that company so that will speed up the process.

You won't get your money back in full as they did provide some kind of service however you should get back at least 80%

Now if you don't want to go through all of the above thats fine too as all your GF wanted was being more beautiful for you.

  5. Office of the Consumer Protection Board

They deal with many cases involving new cars due to the amount of money involved.

There are law firms specialising in consumer protection law that can help you too.

Thanks! Will give them a call - seems they have a hotline.

No need to get a law firm... By law you can return anything for full refund within 7 days. But they kept you from that period and decided at day 9 to inform you about your gearbox. NOt sure of you bought the car from a legit dealer or from a grey import dealer though.

Just go to the consumer protection yourself. Leave the car at BMW, refuse to take it with you and explain the situation to the BMW management. Also write to BMW in Germany and explain the situation. Tell them that you will go to the consumer protection as you had problems from day 1 with it and the car is not even 1 month old.

  6. The school aged kids get it ... sure.

Cutting the hair shorter reduces the risk because they transmit from from one head to another ... and a common way is when kids hair come into contact with another.

In the Thai Family I live with ... I've never seen the adults pick lice from their heads, nor any ?Adult with lice.

What I do see is them plucking the grey hairs out ...

Yeah, that was what I was told. They picking each others grey hairs out. Not lice.

  7. Sell tiger balm at cost price for a year or even longer. Get great ratings and move to bigger and better things. Once you have a database and repeated sales you can start moving up. Its a painful long process as others mentioned.

I mentioned tiger balm as this is a wanted product all over the world. There are plenty of other people selling it but that does not matter as you are selling at cost price.

  8. Thanks for this. Been reading through it all. One thing is not 100% clear to me.

Situation: Got a 3 year old daughter. Certificate only and she carries my last name on her Thai passport. Never married. We split up and agreed to shared custody.

All was fine and well till a few weeks ago. She would not let me fly back home with my daughter for a emergency case (my mom dying, wish to see my daughter final time) This resulted in an argument and she has now taken away my daughter from me and I have been threatened with the police is I attempt to even come to the school to see her. She ended the argument with saying I should go to court!! So I assume she won't be against this procedure :-)

Already found a Thai lawyer who will help me in court to establish that I am the legal father. However I was told that even when I become the "legal" father I will still have no visiting rights to see my daughter. What would be the next step after becoming the legal father in obtaining visiting rights? I know I can ask the Thai lawyer but while I am reading this I thought I pop the question.

    Many thanks in advance!
