  1. Hi,

I'm heading to Samui at the end of April for two weeks. I am on my own so I'd like to stay close to the lively Chaweng strip to avoid taxi rides back and forth to the hotel (I don't drive mopeds).

I'm looking for some accomodation with double bed, AC and bathroom. Nothing fancy but clean and quiet. Of course in a guest friendly establisment. Price range 600-700 Bahts/night.

Can you please give me any suggestions? Any tips on anything are welcome. Also on where to go for breakfast/lunch/dinner.

(I can also consider renting a car, if worth it)

I would book a couple of nights at Chaweng Gardens Beach Hotel, slap in the middle of town, on the beach, and fan rooms from 400bht should just about sqeeze your aircon requirement in for 700 bht but lots of choice for type of accommodation, probably do better to pay 800 baht for something just a little bit better.

email I believe is : [email protected]

From there you can scout out the other places along the beach I just stayed at Chawneg Gardens.

No problems with ladies , sometimes retain id card , quite normal.

Eating, cheapest and best if you like that kind of thing is thai food in the small cafes in Green Mangoe Complex opposite, 30 bht a shot or there is a european style breakfast at the entrance to Green Mango 99bht. Plenty of choice at reasonable prices.

    You want more PM me.

  2. My better half has an ear cleaning problem, she says they are always itchy (I am talking inside the canal) so she cleans with cotton tips up to 5 times each day, on many occassions she has woken up in the morning to an ear full of fluids due to I believe her exessive irritations with the cotton tip.

Other than the obvious slip and perforated ear drum, can this habit of hers be a serious problem? if so what could happen to her?

I have tried many many times to get her to go to the doctor but she says it is ok.

I am worried that she will end up with either so much scar tissue in there she will lose some hearing or an infection that will cause more serious problems.

any thoughts from the medically minded?

My lady too is constantly raking around in her ears , before my time with a sharp metal object that looked like a miniature elongated corn on the cob holder.

Apart from any itching I am certain this is also part of the thai lady obsession with cleanliness which I suspect might precede the itching, it then becomes an obsessive habit, and I am sure will end up with serious damage.

It should be heartily discouraged and introducing a doctor may bring some necessary authority to the subject.

  3. Hallo

We are going end of may begin june for about 7 days to Samui and we have a few questions and wishes  .

We are both 47 , so we do not need a disco anymore , we like to have a chat with other people by a beer and still understand what the other is saying , unless we are to drunk of course  .

    1) We like a quit part but still on walking distance to some small restaurants and a shop just to buy some water or a bottle of wine.

    2) Is there during the above period places to avoid , to much wind or no good sea ?

    3) We are thinking to spend around a 1000 BTH for a bungalow .

    4) So if you have any recommendation about a bungalow or a beach please let us now .

    Thanks

    Adrienne and Harry

Well I don't know how quiet you want it but Lamai Inn 99 ( search google under that) is in Lamai right on the beach and with its own restaurant available that is said to be good , but a bit pricier than the Restaurants on the main drag which is about 250 metres away ( easy to find, behind Macdonalds, long way!) a good selection of accommodation , bungalows or en bloc , I stayed en bloc for 900 bht for a very nice Air con, with good cable TV and fridge with good bathroom and nice patio. Its jusy a little bit away from the action but an easy walk to shops and plenty of restaurants bars ,thai food etc. Bit of a building site next door in October I would check on that.

  4. Just about to move into an apartment with a TOT line. The landlord tells me the cost of the phone is 5 Baht per minute.

    Question:

When you buy a dialup package does this dial a free number so the package is all you pay for?

No , you buy the package then you pay one local call which I believed was 3bht everytime you connect, whether for 5 mins or 5 hours. I have a TOT line.

Is it a direct line or is your landlord cutting himself into the action?

  5. thats seems to be a good deal, JOKA, I am going to give it a try.....thanks for advice....

I use Sharkbyte (JI-net) 179 baht for 15 days, right now some 5 day bonus packs about.

I have had no problems with 1222 (except I must admit this Saturday I had to try 4 times to get on out of three months not bad next Saturday I will dial in at 730am) , I too remain connected all day lost it only a couple of times.

All in all I have had no problems but I am in Pattaya.

A great benefit is you can change your log in name and password after initial sign on and retain it with each new card.

  6. Some mates are coming to Thailand and want to have a good time.

As they have never been here before they asked me for some recommendations.

I recommended Bangkok (Sukhumvit) and Pattaya.

Where else would you recommend that I send them as they have just under 4 weeks.

    Thanks

    K

Ko Samui is without doubt the pick of the bunch, it has everything, plenty of ladies, plenty of clubs , great beaches , and it feels like you are on holiday, I would not say that was true of Pattaya or Bangkok, as my tgf (met in Samui) says 'too much cars'.

PM if you have any questions.

  7. All the local Mom and Pop stores still happy to sell a case of beer or two at any hour.

Latest up-date on the situation. I have just returned from a meeting with the Deputy Mayor,Deputy Governor and Police chief of Surin, and of course I brought up this subject. I was told that in Surin NO alcahol could be sold or even given away during the hours of 14.00-17.00 and midnight-11am

AS one would expect the whole thing is a MESS. In Sukothai you can buy booze 24/24 as far as I can tell. Went to Uttaradit. 16.30 in MK at Tesco. No booze. Guys at next table deeply into bottle of 100 Pipers. Oh, OK if you bring your own. Wife: 'By the time you bring the bill it will be gone 17.00'. MK: 'Oh OK but we will have to bring the beer in a glass not in a bottle'. Wise wife: 'Same Price?' Was. Looked around a fairly deserted MK..bottles lurking under quite a few tables...MK produce large mugs of Heinecken...Don't forget though Feb 6 you really probably cannot buy booze

Reminds me of drinking lager out of a tea cup, poured from a teapot, at 330am, in the cafe next door to Thursdays Discoteque in Kensington, London, England, after closing time , so not so unusual!!!!

  8. It is amazing how people purporting to be experienced in the ways of Thailand and its people constantly seem to apply the criteria they have learnt in their completely different society to how Thai ladies and no doubt men, evaluate, rationalize, justify, interpret ,excuse etc their behaviour , when in fact these criteria are completely irrelevant.

For example Lady makes a misjudgement for which she should probably be a little penitent/apologetic for , but no because she has lost face she goes into one, not talking to anyone and generally giving the farang the impression that he has done something wrong, for hours if not days, leaving farang completely puzzled.

Thai people live a kind of double life if involved with farang, the farang bit and the Thai bit, it would br impossible for her to live her farang bit within Thai society as she would be rejected, as in: Thai lady marry farang, she now farang.

For my money these double standards easily encompass the possibilty of some extra relationship nooky, excused in some perfectly valid (in Thai terms) way to herself and therefore the concept of checking out something that you are really have no idea about, overcomes the principle of western style 'trust'.

I am sure there are 10% of members sitting at home with their faithful Thai wifes who are rightly secure in the realtionships as I am also sure Thai ladies are capable of being very faithful, but the there is the other 90% many of whom are not even in Thailand, who in their terms might have something to worry about.

Remember Rule No:1 : TiT farang never knows what is going on. Don't kid yourself.

Firefox has all that out of the box, even without add-ons.  Tip: Add 'Adblock', with that you can selectively remove pictures from websites, including ads.  Like on this site, I have black on white text and only see the buttons as graphical images. Everything else I have turned off.

    Cheers,

    Chanchao

Yeah 'adblock' is a blast just put it on, thanks for the tip, plus it leads you to all the other 'extensions ' available with firefox I was previously unaware of.

I have found using Opera very problematic in the past, even though I wanted to use it , I had to revert to IE , (possibly because of hitches put in its way by Microsoft?) now I use Firefox no problems. This may however be because of my (low) level of computer proficiency.

  10. Hello,

I need to send sms on regular bases to someone in sweden who has a no. like this one +46709991234 There was an advertisment here that it was possible, but I don't find it.

Or is there another site where I can send free sms with the internet?...............  :o

    ***double post deleted by mod***

SMS SMS SMS SMS SMS.........Well it can't be that easy to send free SMS or else there would not be the constant airing of the subject on Thai Visa. I have been researching this along with everyone else for months, I have managed to send only 3 messages via the U.S. Yahoo site , then after the three messages it states that the recipient needs to send a message back to send any more messages. This may be simple but I have not managed to get this to happen as yet (I am in Thailand). But this has been the only success I have had so it might be worth pursuing. Go to Yahoo U.S. sign up , then sign up for their messenger service then the key word is 'texts',follow those links.

My policy on international SMS messages has become to uitilise the services of www.ipipi.com and pay a bit of money , very reasonable and the system works, see other threads.

I would avoid even visiting the sms.ac site although Anna on this forum seems to think it works , beware you may get free SMS but you will be knocked up for text messages they send you. In my personal experience it will cost you a couple of pounds just to experiment. Be warned.

Remember 'You get what you pay for' , 'pay peanuts you get monkeys', nothing is for free' etc,etc.,etc.

    Look at www.ipipi.com

  11. my sms.ac works pretty well. No charge for 5 msgs per day.

    Dear anna,

The point is not whether you are being charged for SMS messages but whether you are receiving Text messages from sms.ac and if you are , check your mobile account and see if you are being charged for THEM.

  12. icq can send unlimited SMS to vodafone mobiles in AUS... i'm sure icq can send to some companies in the UK.

When I checked ICQ it did not list any service with any Thai provider or for that matter UK provider it seemed very limited , in fact surprisingly limited please advise if anyone knows otherwise.

    Thanks

  13. Try www.ipipi.com haven't them tried myself yet but read good reports and under half the price of my mobile provider to Thailand . Let us know how you get on!l

I did manage to send three texts via U.S. Yahoo the other day but then it said the receiver had to text me back to continue, haven't quite got over that one yet!

In general in my opinion free, catch free, texts don't exist , and watch out for sms.ac it says its free but they send you useless text messages and charge 50p each for them!!!

  14. Hi all. anyone recommend the chepest place to buy a plasma tv in pattaya, tesco, big c or somewhere better? are there any electrical retailers with websites or online  purchasing?

    Cheers

I would steerclear of Plasma TVs as they are known to leak gas and have a limited life, hence manufacturers could be offering what seems like mega deals on Plasma TVs,

Wait for availability/ sensible pricing on LCD flat TVs.

  15. All of your quotes seem to be about the punctuality of Phuket air and I have read elsewhere and on this forum that if something goes wrong to delay a flight they do not have the resources to slot in a spare plane or anything else to help the situation, and you can be in in for a long wait, I have read somewhere 38hours on one occasion..

Having said that I flew out with them November 2004 no problems, on time, Ok flight for the money.

So really the big consideration is tied to their actual record of delays which at the moment seem to be pointing in the direction of paying a bit more for a more guaranteed departure.

I will certainly be factoring this into my equation next time I fly, for me Phuket would have to be a good GBP 50 cheaper than the quality opposition to be in the game and I'm a pauper.

  16. When I opened a savings account with Bangkok bank with 500bht, and a passport with a 30 day tourist visa in it, they asked me if i wanted a credit card. I declined so it went no further but given the above it doesn't seem to me as if getting a credit card is all that much of an issue.

  17. dear anna,

I hope sms.ac are not sending you various text messages and charging you 50p a time for the priviledge, check it out.

They dont charge me. They charged you? I know this free 5 msg per day is only for the first three months.

I never managed to send an SMS I was in England at the time and couldn't change the 44 prefix on the dialer on the screen to call Thailand. But they sent me a few text messages , as they said they would and charged me about 50p for each one from my pay as you go SIM, when I eventually sussed it out and turned off the 'channels' that were sending me the messages it said i had to turn them back on or I couldn't send any more SMS messages.

So have they sent you any text messages? If so check whether they have charged you for each one either on your pay as you go SIM or credit account.

Let is know how you get on.

  18. Now we are using www.sms.ac to send msgs abroad ( I only tried England). 5 msgs free for each day. Of course you have to pay the premium msgs. Anyway, much cheaper for me.

Hope it also works for you guys.

    dear anna,

I hope sms.ac are not sending you various text messages and charging you 50p a time for the priviledge, check it out.

  19. That makes GB2P514 with Emirates from Manchester a good price considering Phuket Air flies from Gatwick, and are definitely not in the same class as Emirates.
    2

The fact my mate lives in London & its a "direct flight" cheaper by 64 pounds. I do'nt think he's worried to much about not being in the same class. :o

I flew out with Phuket no problem, but your mate might get a bit worried about 'the class' if he experiences a big delay of 38 hours with Phuket as reported on this forum, amongst others, this is where 'class counts'.

My response was directed at someone from the north of England.

  20. Dr John,

Where is the exploitation? I just can't see it.

There are 'workers' all over the world, even in Charlton.

Generally speaking here in Thailand the girls (and boys) make a decision to better their lives and that of their family by plying  their trade, no one forces them to do it or forces them to stay.  I just don't see a problem.

    Please explain your disgust.

This type of comment is typical of the self-justification-no-one forces them to do it- sex tourists often advance. They are usually so brutish and half educated-and largely ignorant of Thai culture- that the moral squalor of their position eludes them.Actually the huge scale of the sex industry in Thailand -and Thai males are far worse offenders than the pitiful Western sex tourists-has caused dreadful misery and suffering over the years.

Of course the "scene" is attractive to newcomers (I remember it well!) but knowledge of Thailand, its culture and language provides the antidote. The Neanderthal element will hurl abuse at any comment like this but those who are fond of Thailand and the Thais will acknowledge the truth of what I say.I don't think the sex industry can be eliminated nor should it be.But it would be good for Thailand if it could be scaled down so that sex tourists no longer came in such large numbers.Indeed many of them appear to be semi-permanent residents. The most unpleasant of these are the tubby middle aged men aptly descibed as FWPs (Fat white plonkers).I think for young men in their 20's much is forgivable if they are courteous and kind.

It is part of Thai culture for poor Thai families in the country to indenture their young girls for financial reward to the sex industry, on a massive scale, therefore whether they understand it or not the 'brutish and half educated' sex tourists are actually merely partaking of a product that has been made available to them by Thai culture, to go to a country and get criticised for partaking of its culture be it religious, social or sexual, is a bit rich, I doubt if many of the 'normal' tourists actually understand much about budhism as they walk round the temples, putting money in the box, but do not get criticised for this?

It seems to me to be highly patronising and as already stated hypocritical, for all these farangs to come to Thailand and start pontificating about the structure of Thai society , implying that it is heavily influenced by a group of people (small) they apparently abhor , when it is in fact hardly influenced by this group at all, even though they may appear quite visible.

This is the way the Thais want it, it is their country, if you don't like it ship out, and start writing to the United Nations , so they can start interfering in the internal affairs of Thailand and lets see how far they get.

Considering this thread started talking about ' sexually exploiting poor people', Boris' comment that such exploitation is forgiveable for 'young men in their 20s' and not FWPs seems to entirely miss the point! Big time!

  21. i have ddr266 memory on board now, and i think the motherboard manual suggested using this type.  now the shops in zeer hardly carry this, most have ddr333. can i use the two together, or can i even use this type (ddr333) at all?

    thanks

Check out www.crucial.com this memory manufacturer has a lot of info on upgrading memory and if you can identify your computer/board it will go in and then tell you what you can use to upgrade.
