  1. dimanual, you don't actually buy a card you go on the net to the website, buy the card with your credit card and they email you a pin number and the numbers to dial for access ( with a bit of security bullshit) , any deal that as 08.. number means you pay for the 08 segment of the call as well as the card rate as you do for the 0207 part of the call if you use that rate, if you use the 0800 number there is a surcharge of about 6p per minute.

At the end of the day using the 020 7... number is usually pretty cheap and if you have a free option you can end up paying 2p a minute to all Thailand, I have not seen a better deal mentioned.

  2. I have recently bought a PCMCIA card that gives me 2 USB2 inputs , how to use the installation disc is not very clear, but I have gathered in my attempts to install it that the firmware running the PCMCIA slot is 16bit and the card is 32 bit.

The machine is a quite old IBM 240 I have been to the IBM site from which I have gleaned nothing though I suspect the answer may lie here, I have been to microsoft and not found the answer. Utilising downloads from the IBM site seems difficult for me as it seems to alway talk of creating a diskette but as I don't have a floppy drive , and as IBM must know some of its computers do not have a floppy drive this seems difficult considering most downloads just arrive on hard disc and get clicked to open.

    Any ideas please?

  3. I too was lured to this site by the offer of free sms that has not materialised and has been explained elsewhere as not happenning because of the unreliable service provided, and they are trying to source elswhere, I have suggested that even paying a little like 5-10p would be a help

I have followed every suggestion of free sms to Thailand from Yahoo to a site called something like www.freesms.ac which turned out to be a complete con don't even visit if you come across it it is not free and to receive abland message from them costs 50p GBP .

I have searched with Google etc and have come to the conclusion there is no Free SMS to Thailand.

  4. Try www.uk66.com they list a lot of cards I use nomi call at only 2p a minute to thailand general, landline, some are 1.8p to bangkok, no problems good quality and always connects. There is a 5p a day service charge and you can connect using 020 7 number i.e. local call london or free if you have that kind of package, 0800 at a supplement and 0870 type number at a sepplement.

My telephone deal is free calls after 6 and weekends so I am calling Thailand for 2p a minute or 500 minutes for a £10 card. What a bargain!!! Though lady is a bit pissed at being called so late in the weeky

  5. Article in the financial times (UK) on the 26th October saying that the big move is for consumers to stop printing their own photographs because it is very expensive but take their photos to a say a Kodak shop to be printed, better photos and cost effective. When in Ko Samui I took my smart card out of the camera with selected photos I had put back on it from the computer and took it to the local digital photo shop ordinary 6 x 4 prints were just 10 baht each and were excellent. First time I did it. I would never print a photograph again on the basis of that experience.

  7. I have (bad) experience in applying for visa for girlfriend in Jamaica I doubt if the underlying attitude of consulates varies worldwide, it is only modified by the 'face' they put on their deliberations.

You may know there is no appeal from their decision and in my experience they interpret facts to suit the policy towarda the country in question, although there is a clause in the act that says the applicants welfare can be provided for by the sponsor, in fact they are far more interested in the applicant who has to prove to their satisfaction what she is saying is true, it is absolutely no good thinking I am big man with lots of money so application will be approved. e.g. I provided UK consulate in Jamaica with bank statement with US $100,000 on it and this immeadiately made me drug runner trying to recruit girlfriend, as I do not work. (Money inherited) no further enquiry and no reference to me.

In my second applicaction I provided evidence that I had bought a house close to my girlfriend , so I could look after her better and be closer to her, quite a big deal you would think , but no , the consulate told her that my relationship with her was not what she thought it was, my girlfriend spoke of being ' frightened' during the interview. It is obviously very easy for a sophisticated diplomat to make a maybe not so well educated lady with limited English look anyway he wants her to in the application.

I don't think the Consulate is looking to be accommadating in these matters they really want to say no.

I strongly advise going to visa application expert because it is true that saying one thing wrong will blight your application possibly irritrievably, in my case in Jamaica I said in the application that 'naturally my girlfriend has asked if I will take her to England' which you would think anybody would and this was a big issue that I am sure had big effect on application, and although it says on form refusal will not affect future applications I believe this to be utter bullshit. I do not believe anyone identified as 'ladybar' will get visa and would like to hear any good experiences in this regard.

  8. Just back from Samui, and I would say at 150bht a day its hard to turn down the honda option, I was there for 4 weeks and my lady who is very slight drove the bike all over the place didn't see any accidents or ever feel at risk despite the sometimes frenetic conditions.

I think the way thet people conduct themselves must contribute to the death toll i.e. drinking and NO CRASHHELMET if you are sensible your risk comes down a lot I would say, plus driving with the Thais and not against them.

  9. I would forget the coach, my lady says it is a 10hr journey! and no joke,

Currently Bangkok Air have internet promotion first and last flight to Samui from bkk at about 2200 baht plus 400 baht tax leaving Samui.

I have used this service 1 hour and your there/back , book online at I think www.bangkokair.com maybe www.bangkokairways.com.

Book one way in England and book return in internet shop in Samui when you know what you are doing.

You'll have to pay to get to the bus station from bkk though with my lady it was only 110baht in taxi no doubt different story for farang alone, went to departure level and got in cab as it dropped someone off, as recommended elsewhere works fine.

You can also fly to Pattaya once a day om Samui with Bangkok air.
