  1. Heading to Phantip, etc., again soon, and I'm wondering if I should replace an old 17" CRT with a digital monitor. I'm looking at 17 or better, though for an old Linux server, or a system next to my hi-fi system to handle music or movie serving to the TV and sound system I might look for a tiny LCD.

I'm also wondering about other cool buys that are worth checking out. Welcome all ideas.

Looking here at a price list from IT City in Tuk Com Pattaya with plenty of branches elsewhere, They have L.G., Acer , Benq and Samsung 17" under 7000bht and Acer 19" 8,000bht Samsung 19" 9,000bht. A few months ago a 17"would be at least 10k and a 19" 14k+.

I would say well cheap. :o

  2. When in samui it is possible to feel you are 'on holiday' in Pattaya you feel you are 'in a big city'.

I really don't think anyone would give Pattaya a second thought of it did not have the somewhat hedonistic, extreme, human industry to spark it up, and provide a unique atmosphere.

Samui is supposed to be more expensive, bottom line it may be, but not that a non tramp farang would notice.

Like they say above reasonably cheap to get a flight from Samui to U-Tapao airport more difficult to get to Pattaya from there, so a couple of weeks in Samui then to Pattaya and a bus ride to Bangkok for the plane home.

  3. Although I am not in BKK, I have never been taken to see any apartment by an agent that I have seen in their ads, they always turn up and try to take me to see something completely different.

So the original ads that actually look interesting are just to get you 'Down the Shop' and sell you something else.

  4. Arriving at Doan Muang, I have been approached immeadiately outside the terminal building by a Thai taxi man apparently brokering rides to Pattaya for a great rate, by returning taxi drivers.

He is a parked up in the short term car park and drives you to your taxi a couple of kilos away away.

I am sure that the taxi boys will use similar ingenuity to provide a better and cheaper service than that envisaged by the powers that be. :o

  5. I am interested in buying a new Suzuki Carribean (Swift) S.U.V., i know this vehicle costs about 400,000 baht brand new. Would a 10% cash down payment be enough to buy this vehicle?

Have any TV members purchased this particular vehicle? What was purchase experience like (customer service)? Were you able to purchase the vehicle in your name or did you have to put the vehicle in your wifes name? How much of a down payment did you have and how much are/were your monthly payments? Is there a specific dealer(s) that you recommend?

I live in Bangkok and would really like to have my own vehicle instead of having to ride a (unsafe)motorcycle everywhere.

    thanks

    feel free to PM me

A Suzuki Carribean is not or close to a swift , it is generally known in the world as a SJ413. i.e. 4 wheel drive 1.3 litre. Thats all I know. :o

  6. hi all

i am looking at buying a house in thailand.

are there any problems with getting your lawyer to sign the paperwork for you for the transfer by using power of attorney.

basically can he run off with the chanote

    cheers

I usually give power of attorney to my agent to save going down the land office no problem, however technically you should have the power of attorney examined by another attorney to ensure it only authorises him to transfer the property into your name and not any name. :o

  7. Just out of curiousity, do most pharmacies carry them here?

I found that a double-shot espresso hops me up for a round of golf and the score difference is significant but I hate coffee and red bull has a paltry 50mg in one bottle/can.

Sorry, but caffeine content is highly regulated in the Kingdom. :o

So what about all those little bottles of caffeine drink Thai people are continuosly slugging on.??

I doubt if they are very weak.

Cheap cheap and in every store. :D

  8. i going down to rayong to have a look around in october . wife (thai) doesn't want to stay pattaya. are there enough shops, big c etc , where' s the busy beaches , if any , would you live there

    thanks in advance

Rayong is pretty huge it has everything , Big C on the by pass, (Highway 36) Lotus in town , bit cheaper than Pattaya. All sorts of other shops, bus station to Bangkok.

Very busy and chaotic in Rayong not very busy on beaches outside I have been to.

But very short on English communication!

I have bought down there if you want info on properties P.M. me.

  9. Hi

    Regarding the Tor Tor 3

Do you need to have a property already agreed?

Before you send money to your Thai bank account.

I would rather send my money over next month then go look at some more condos.

But is it the Thai way to do it in reverse. Buy agree then go and get the money?

You can get a Tor Tor three now called something else up to 6 months after you have imported the money. :o

  10. I was trying to get a few bottles of supplements shipped from the states to me here in Thailand and the UPS people told my family that you can't send them because of Thai laws. Does anybody know about this?

Before you consider shipping anything via companies such as UPS you may or may not know that on arrival at Thai customs UPS will pay whatever duty is demanded of them and hand the bill straight to you, end of story, whether or not there is any legitimate reasoning behind the bill you will have no recourse to reason, just pay up. :o

  11. My Mum has been trying to find Tea Tree Oil in Bangkok. Tried Boots and Bodyshop but they only have watered down facial cleanse solutions etc.

Anyone seen pure Tea Tree Oil here the kind you can find in UK Health Shops and Aromatherapy places.

    Cheers.

Body Shop does sell a small tincture like bottle of Tea Tree oil, it is not 100% but this concentrated Tea tree oil is pretty potent, however this botttle I would say is about half way to what you are looking for.

Do not be tempted to order from say Australia on the internet as I did and never received the product due I would say to Thai Post Office shortcomings. :o

  12. I too find the that the fact Windows XP disc seems to become redundant after installing SP2 from another source extremely frustrating and typically "Windows".

I managed to get round this by doing a Google search on combining the two and it is pretty easy to find a site that will tell you how to make an "XP+SP2" CD. It must be easy 'cos I am not very computer literate.

When you have made this new disc you can the use it to reinstall and presumably repair no problem, as it will no longer be older than what is on your machine!

brings back the old XP disc from the dead :o

  13. To talk seriously about the British system of granting Visas is a joke in itself.

The Home office is in total disarray, the Home Secretary has described it's standards in the lowest possible terms (Quote:"Dysfunctional") for a government ministry.

This is all characterised by the fact that he is the third Home secretary in about a year the other two having resigned because of their corrupt tenures. One for fast tracking his maids visa!! and various shenanigans at Lunar house probably the premier Visa office in the Uk, where ECOs have been meeting applicants outside business hours (according to governmnet enquiry), I wonder what for?

I really don't know how GU22 and Scouser himself can completely ignore this tragic state of affairs at the ministry and this must give some clue to their true ability or will to provide truthful and valid real world assistance to the members of the board as a whole , (as opposed to the 'lottery' winners), which they no doubt own.

The only recourse for the UK taxpayer who is provided with such a well documented poor standard of service by the people whose wages he pays, is to involve his member of Parliament from day one for any serious visa application as he at least will be very aware of the poor quality of service and lack of sufficient direction in this Government Ministry.

  14. Whilst i don't agree with this hysteria over a few illegals , what i really object to is the public being asked to be unpaid police officers shopping illegals and their employers to the real police via crimestoppers. I'm a live and let live person and i have no intention of shopping people who are doing me no harm

Well in a different BBC news report it was stated that there were 30,000 to 50,000 illegal people in the UK on fraudulent 'education' visas issued by Home Office ECOs.

I don't suppose you consider this number 'a few' and it and the cumulative effect of all the other Home Office corruption reports ( and there are many) that lead to the impression of hysteria, and comments such as that below taken from a BBC news item:

Commenting on the latest allegations, UK Independence Party leader Roger Knapman said the Home Office had become "nothing more than a comedy routine".

"The whole of this wretched government department is rotten to the core," said Mr Knapman.

And he criticised the reforms announced this week by John Reid as "meaningless spin with no real substance".

    :o:D

  15. Yes evrey hard drive will need power either from it' s own power supply, or from a 'powered Usb hub' that is a hub that has its own mains power supply(if the 500mw they deliver per socket is enough).

Plus every USB device that is connected to the basically the same USB input degrades the performance of that input, so although you might plug in 250 drives they won't perform very well, to say the least, if they are being used at the same time.
