  1. TOT are supposed to be a bit old school and if you need anything done you have to back hand someone ( info from lady in internet cafe cannot speak English told my wife).

When my telephone line went all crackly after a thunderstorm it was never again able to do dial up internet, despite visiting the TOT offices on two occasions and phoning them half a dozen times, but with a lot of charming assurances it would be fixed.

When I wanted to go broadband they said it would take 30 days, luckily got TT&T line and they did it in 10 (although they said 7).

All this in Pattaya a metropolis.

  2. The problem with taking the 'V.I.P.bus with toilet on board' is that you do not actually have a choice, you either take the next bus which may or not be 'The Motorway' bus or you wait until the 'Motorway bus' runs which could be in two hours time. I think all the buses have a toilet on board, but I have never braved them!

  3. Phone Jen Brochner Nielson on 015550908, He is CEO of D2re, check his website on www.d2re.com.

The problem you have may be lack of experience in dealing with the Thai real estate infrastructure, might be worth paying a couple of % to get an experienced partner.

  4. It is true that dealing with the Embassy/Consulate (I refer to the UK version) is a complete waste of time. If they say no for a wholly illegal reason, as they surely do a lot of the time, you have no recourse for a tourist visa.

For this reason it is prudent to involve your M.P. in your application from the word go. This is the only way you can receive some external authoratative support, and avoid getting that stamp in the back of the applicants passport which is a killer for future applications, whatever they say to the contrary. (Because it indicates that the ECO believes the applicant lied in their original application, and even all the top boys on this forum say lying means a rejected application and lots of bad Karma for the future).

  5. I notice a hint of silence from the so called "Industry Professionals" that often use this forum ?..... :o

    Any comments ??

Sure...they could only agree with your summary of the situation which is spot on. Wait and see next year the prices will have gone up by another 5 percent and as well as the guaranteed returns you will also get free curtains and a washing machine :D

Perhaps in a year later you will also have the free services of a maid for the first year as well :D

And soon it will be a 30+30+30+30 year lease they recommend :D

  6. Unlike fares out of the UK (like everything in UK rip off!) fares bought here seem to have changeable return dates within a specified time period.

Recently I have seen Kuwait at about 20k bht + 'taxes' and Gulf Air who I used last time at around 25k bht + 'taxes' my gulf Air return flight could be changed to up to six months from departure date.

A direct flight with say Thai air will never be cheaper than a stopover in the Gulf and the price of the ticket seems to be determined by the length of the stopover.

My 'mate' Manager Nisan at Cambodia Inter, in Soi Buckeow Pattaya says 'Go and get the best price and I will discount it' His number is 010035095

  7. I have a MasterCard debit card from SCB freely issued, it also has 'for electronic use only' printed on it and it is good to purchase stuff in stores with except it is issued with a 20,000bht limit, that maybe could be changed.

I do not have a work permit.

  8. Erm dont know where you buy your gold.. Certainly not locally.

Euro price 12 month has been a 39.3% rise

Swiss franc 12 month 42.2% rise

    GBP 40% 12 months.

    http://www.kitco.com/gold_currency/charts.htm?USD

Me thinks you need to look at your facts..

I think Swiss Francs would not be a bad idea.

I know nothing much but I do know that now when dollar strengthens the swiss franc strengthens, when the dollar weakens the swiss franc weakens, just like clockwork, this would seem to contradict the above suggestion. :o

  9. For those who said get down to the hospital I would say avoid Bangkok Pattaya Hospital.

5 years ago I had 7 crowns in a clinic in Pattaya Klang, last year I went to Pattaya Bangkok to see about some veneers for my front teeth, the dentist examined me and said I needed all of my crowns replacing, no x-rays just a visual exam.

He then tried to pressure me into making an appointment and leaving a 30,000 baht deposit, the total cost was over 400K as quoted by him

Needless to say I declined and went to 3 other clinics and had x-rays all of whom said no replacements were necessary.

I asked all about veneers and one said I didn’t need them that she could give me some white fillings and a bleach, if I wasn’t happy she would not charge me and would then do the veneers, she was the first one who tried to stop me doing work which I found reassuring.

The clinic is on the left side of Pattaya Klang heading towards 3rd road from second road about 40 mtrs after you have passed Soi Bukow, it is called 92 dental clinic from what I remember and of all the people I have recommended no one has ever complained to me.

Two things although veneers look good the dentist has to damage sometimes healthy teeth (that don't look good) to put them on, I think by roughing up the enamel, this put me off after initial enquiries and in fact advice from the dentist. I also wonder what the long term maintenance might involve.

Number two, I have after reading all the boards just started with Dr Arie at Pattaya International Hospital on Soi 4 off second road, utterly charming totally professional and highly skilled, my lady says having had an extraction yesterday 'she gentle she no hurt me'.

I am in the process of having a root filling by her specialist and I have not felt a thing, the costs are root filling 3000bht per root, crown with highest grade gold base 13,000bht (lowest 9,000bht), extraction 800bht, filling 600-1700bht, x-ray 130bht.

These may not be the cheapest prices in Thailand but I believe I am getting a root filling and crown for the price of a crown in th U.S. /U.K. and treatment (and lack of pain) that at least equals the best I have had in the U.K. :o

  10. :D Excellent. Thank goodness there are enough people around like this to take action. :D

Au contraire, Khun Pinan's actions are totally misguided and ill-informed. Her argument that these are possibly recently captured wild elephants is preposterous. The plight of Thailand's unemployed domesticated elephant population is detestable. The idea that elephants in the wild are in better health than elephants in modern well-designed and well-maintained zoo sanctuaries is simply wrong. I suspect this woman has her heart in the correct place but is simply unwilling to see the truth of the situation.

Thailand has a surplus of domesticated elephants and currently it does not have any facility, not to mention the funds, to help this national symbol. As far as I am concerned, eight elephants off to Australia, a country that has in residence one of the world's leading zoo architects who has designed some really impressive elephant enclosures, is eight elephants not ending up in misery or upon a dinner plate up in China.

Sounds :o about right to me

  11. Doesn't matter how much it costs if it never arrives, I sent 2 x DVDs wrapped in a bit of bubble wrap and put in a biggish envelope posted airmail to England six weeks ago and it has not arrived yet and I doubt if, based on my previous inward experience it will. I suppose I could have sent it EMS for about 9600bht but then I could buy UPS for a little bit more................

  12. I am heading back to OZ in few weeks and have about 20kg extra baggage.

I was told 2nd hand that one should send on the same flight but as cargo rather than excess baggage - has anyone done this and what does it cost per Kg?

Here is what I used to know (few years old now)

excess baggage is 280 baht ($10 aud) per kilogram

Curent postage by air is 7400 baht, by sea - 1 month 3300, 2 months 1800 baht

    help appreciated

    Jack

If you join Gulf Air's frequent flyer club on the internet for free you get 10kg extra baggage free.

When I checked in at Londons Heathrow they made me take some luggage out of my suitcase and put it in my hand luggage that was already taking the p**s. They didn't even weigh the hand luggage

before or after. This was to get my suitcase under the baggage handling rules weight.

I would imagine Bangkok check would be slacker than Heathrow.

So I would pack a 30kgs suitcase, take 10kgs of hand luggage to check in and somehow have another 10kgs that I would pick up after check in and take on the plane, they do not screen carry on baggage til you get through passport control.

That is if your baggage is fairly compact as well as heavy and if Gulf Air go to where you are going. :o
