  1. What a sad shell of a man. He makes a statement, and the first reaction by everyone (himself included?) is a mix of:

    "it's not true"

"maybe it's true, but we'll have to wait until tomorrow to see whether he switches positions."

"It's true for now, but it's a ruse to try and get more votes. If he reaches office he will vacillate again."

Who remembers the 8-ball game? It was popular when Pat Boone was copying Little Richard songs. It had a little window. You shake the black plastic ball, and then look at the window. Little messages would appear at random. It might show; "yes" "no" "maybe" "probable" "doubtful" "try again" ....and so on. Trump has an 8-ball way of making decisions. Not the type of person you want with a finger on the triggers of 77 nukes.

This is just the land based Minuteman missiles.. does not count Cruise and Trident based nuclear based missiles.

Five hundred Minuteman III missiles are deployed at four bases in the north- central United States: Minot AFB and Grand Forks AFB, North Dakota, Malmstrom AFB, Montana, and F. E. Warren AFB, Wyoming. Operational since 1968, the model "G" differs from the "F" in the third stage and reentry system. The third stage is larger and provides more thrust for a heavier payload. The payload, the Mark 12 reentry system, consists of a payload mounting platform, penetration aids, three reentry vehicles (RVs) and an aerodynamic shroud. The shroud protects the RVs during the early phases of flight. The mounting platform is also a "payload bus" and contains a restartable hypergolic rocket engine powered by hydrazine and nitrogen tetroxide. With this configuration, the RVs can be independently aimed at different targets within the missile's overall target area or "footprint". This concept is known as Multiple Independently Targeted Reentry Vehicles (MIRV).

  2. Anyone out at 5am falling from there motocy probably deserves all that comes to them. Not all, but most.

Most (but not all) people out at 5am in Hua Hin deserve all that comes to them? How do you differentiate between those that deserve it and those that do not?

I am up and out of the house at around 5 am everyday. Not sure if I deserve "it" or not. 5 am is not a witching hour, some of us get up at that hour!

  3. In 1973 I was out with my future wife at Paradise Pool in Udorn. I had been drinking and decided I wanted some fried rice from a restaurant near by, My future wife told me to take off my baht chain before I went to the restaurant as it was dangerous to wear a gold chain. Oh course I was young and did not listen. On the way back, someone tried to take my chain from behind, I was able to turn around and had him on the ground and was hitting him. Then another Thai came out of he alley and hit my head with a pipe as my friend just stood there. I did get 5 stitches... Lessons learned no gold and new friends when I go out... My home was robbed in 73 as well, but had nothing of value taken as any valuables were on base... No one was home... I did go to the police (things have not changed) about the assault and robbery of the chain, He wanted me to pay him to look into to it... I just walked away!!!

  4. 150.000 is not excessive.

A Thai friend recently organised a funeral for her sister.

    Costs were almost 400.000.

Our cost -donations for sister in law over $5,000.00 US... She lived with us and had been a second mother figure to my wife...

  5. This does not work out well the overwhelming majority of the time.

Thais do not have the same sense of privacy that Westerners do....both in terms of walking into the house whenever they please, helping themselves to anything of yours etc but also in terms of prying/interfering in personal matters.

And they will put considerable pressure on your wife to do things "their" way; this may also include pressure to give them financial assistance.

Should you have children, this will be a particular problem and you may find yourself voiceless in how they are raised.

Both you and your wife will be happier if you build further away, and relations with the inlaws will likely be much more harmonious that way.

Same experience (no privacy) when I visited her family over the years (43). So when we build our home my wife wanted her sister and niece to come live with us. I did not have any objections. Both were (sister in law passed) very caring people, but I explained how I enjoy my privacy. So we built a two bedroom house on our land for them and then our retirement home over ten years ago. They were not a burden and my wife was happy to take care of family members. In this case her sister who had raised her after her mother died and they were living in abject poverty. So my sister-in-law thought the world of me and on her death bed I was the last person she talked about... I guess my point is it depends on how you get along with the in-laws! Her family two brother, ex-husband, grand kids and great grand kids all live with in 20 KM.. Has not been an issue for us.

  6. if he complains give him 500 baht or a bottle of booze.

Why on earth should I? I simply want to know the legal situation here and what my rights are.

I have the same situation, we did approach our neighbor first we got permission to cut anything on our side of the wall. Since the tree was so tall I could not reach the higher limbs of the tree from my side, So we went back to him. He has cut the tree back but we still have some limbs over our property line dropping leaves in our yard... My wife says we have the right to cut anything on our side of the wall, Next we plan to complete the cutting back, what he did not do... The plan is for me to do it this time. So I guess it is legal for you to cut anything on your side of the wall, but best to seek out the neighbor.

  7. I would hope that a third party is never allowed to access my account unless I've authorised a power of attorney.

I have it all. The manager of the bank was there when all the paperwork was signed. I had no trouble withdrawing the money, it was just the transfer that was the problem.

You HAVE the money and can not figure out how to send it to them?

    Can you say "Cognitive dissonance?"

Happens everyday its called an ACH or bill paying... I can set up an ACH to anyone in the world from my Chase account

  8. It's a known fact that Thai nationals with dual citizenship / passports should always enter Thailand and depart Thailand on a Thai passport to avoid the hassle you have stated above.

It takes about 3 to 5 days to obtain a Thai passport in Thailand so I fail to see why he doesn't currently have one.

What advice are you actually seeking ?

As he is my step-son and his parents who are still both required to appear before the Thai passport issuing authorities but not live close to each other it is not as easy as you would like to believe.

Really my girlfriend obtained a passport for her son my step son only last year, his father was no where to be seen so I fail to see how that's the case.

My ex-step daughter could not get a Thai passport with out the fathers approval. This the form I obtained from the Thai Consulate in the US. I have attached the form required by Udorn passport office.

I just did this for my step son and his ex-wife, he is in the US and she is here... I am sure they would have a form that can handle this with out both parents being there. I also wrote a letter for him to sign saying she could take the children to Sweden to visit with their new step-dad. The Swedish Embassy required it for the grand-kids to get a visa.

  10. Let's hope they at least get the 1000 baht fine for ignoring the boats capacity. The Marine Park chief of the district is doing a great job instilling safety first under his watch! Just check the news headlines for boat accidents, drownings, maimings etc.

Where did you read the boat's capacity was ignored? Unless you mean it was not fully loaded to capacity?

In the second article"The 50-passenger boat, owned by the Rak Talay tour company, was carrying 63 tourists at the time of the incident, said Phang Nga Marine Police Chief Jakkree Mekumphonsuit."

  11. dental records maybe , unless a new DNA record has been started in Spain, or was a swab given,

Chief investigator Pol Gen Panya Mamen, special advisor to the Royal Thai Police Commissioner, said the police are in possession of Mr David’s fingerprints and DNA records which came about after his relatives gave them to forensic examiners in order to match them with the recovered body parts.

  12. I never bring cash at all. When I need Thai baht, I do a cash advance at Bangkok Bank using a no-foreign-transaction-fee credit card. I always get the top exchange rate and no charges whatsoever. I recently got 36 baht per dollar at two separate cash advances.

I never use my credit card at some stores though because they knock more than a baht per dollar off of the exchange rate. You have to be careful and check the effective exchange rate before you pay by credit card. Central gives you the regular Visa Card exchange rate so it's OK to use your card there.

Are you sure you aren't paying any additional fees for doing a cash advance on your credit card?

I also have a a no-foreign-transaction-fee credit card (from BofA), but this just means that the usual additional percentage fee levied for a foreign transaction is waived. I've never heard of a credit card that allows you to take a cash advance without some sort of transaction and/or interest charges, regardless of where the transaction occurs.

Keep in mind that a cash advance from a credit card is basically a loan you're taking out from the credit card company, as opposed to a withdrawal from a debit card, which is just withdrawing your own existing funds. Credit card companies aren't in the business of giving loans for free.

Regardless of whether you have foreign transaction fees, cash advances nearly always attract two fees: (1) a flat transaction fee, and (2) interest charges that accrue from the day of the transaction (that is, no grace period). In addition, the interest rate for a cash advance is typically higher than that for purchases. You will typically have one or both of these charges appearing on your monthly statement, regardless of where the transaction occurs (your home country, or elsewhere).

So, while you may not see any charges of fees when initiating a cash advance at the bank, I think you'll see a transaction fee and/or accrued interest (but no foreign transaction fee) on the statement you receive later.

Well written, I just have my wife take the money out using our ATM card, just insure there are no conversion fees, most credit unions qualify. Some can be as high as 3% from the US banks. As for purchases my wife uses the CC at Big C etc., again the CC has no foreign transaction fee...

  13. Good so far. They are impounding a tiny percentage of the vehicles. Why some and not others? I wonder what the total penalties are.

In the US, getting a DUI will cost you less than $20. That'll buy a 12 pack of beer, LOL. tongue.png

Must be a different U.S. than I grew up in. Getting a DUI incurs a serious fine, possibly suspension of license, higher insurance costs, etc.

    I my home state of NJ is as follows;

Alcohol or drug related DUI with BAC of 0.10% or greater
    License loss
    Fines, fees & surcharges
    Prison term
    Community service, IDRC & Interlock
    7 months–

    1 year

    $300–$500 fine

    $230 IDRC* fee

    $100 to drunk driving fund

    $100 to AERF*

    $1,000/year (for 3 years) surcharge

    $75 to Neighborhood Services Fund

    Up to 30 days
    12–48 hours IDRC*

BAC 0.15% or greater: ignition interlock device during license suspension and 6 months - 1 year following restoration

As you can see just the fine is $300-$500, so a DUI cost is in the thousands not $20

  14. I would have to say that I don't think it is a good idea to list a persons financial status (income and job) on an ID card, as for one thing that can change rapidly and could even change a number of times during a year - also as it would give the financial info to anyone who saw the card, it is likely to increase the criminal targeting of individuals based on their income.

Not good at all - the ID card is often photocopied and used in all kinds of applications or registrations by private organisations - and there is no guarantee of the security of the storage or dissemination of that essentially private information.

I would guess they would encrypt the data and it would be on a smart chip, just like the US military ID card and your bank card. You would need the ID software and a reader to view the data. It would not be printed on the card. Using the chip allows for updates of job/salary info as required as apposed to printing something with data that has a limited life.

  15. You can add the wife as a POA, power of attorney to any of your accounts or open a new one with her as POA. You and your wife need to fill out many additional forms. She can withdraw money if you become ill (and I am guessing until you are declared dead and a death certificate is issued). The account shows in your name only and a bank letter to immigration would indicate this. However, the bank has records in their file for the account providing them with the information needed to let your wife withdraw from the account in your name.

Unless it is different in Thailand your POA expires when you expire. I have a Thai will an I was told it had to be set up as follows; 50% to surviving spouse and 50% evenly distributed to the children.

  16. I think that the only thing that I would do differently would be not to get involved with buying property here.

I would have done the exact opposite.. I have been coming to Thailand since 1973, I did buy several properties/built our home when the exchange rate was in the 40s (USD). I wish I had tracked the baht and taken advantage when it was in the 50s. If I had known I would still be married to the same women for 42 years. I would have purchased lots of land. It was almost nothing 40 years ago....
