  1. Of course anyone can get reinfected, it is obvious and normal. If the virus or virons are in the air you breathe, you can get reinfected. The point is that it takes time for the antibodies to discover the invasion and track down the individual viruses. This is why when you get reinfected with the common cold it takes a few hours of feeling a cold is coming until the immune system's antigens from a previous infection kick in and start fighting the infection. Until there is herd immunity, people will be reinfected. Fortunately the W.H.O clarified their statement, the day after, saying that they meant that there is no evidence of immunity if you have antibodies, because that is always what they say prior to tests and research having confirmed that there is immunity. They do expect people with immunity to be immune for a time. The period of immunity can only be established with time.

  2. I also live in Prawet and the water tastes good. There was an occasion a few months ago that there was a sulphate taste, probably due to an accident at the treatment plant. Happens in the UK sometimes if the tanker driver with the Aluminium Suphate water conditioning chemical have a spill or the operator gets the dose wrong.

Is there one honest official in the whole kingdom? The government orders less than 10 cases before reopening and even the medical officers will lie for a few baht. Remember this next time you go and see a doctor! Money usurps health every time for the plebs

Don't you mean the rich? Pleb (Plebian): A commoner, a member of the lower social classes.

  4. Those magic wand UV lights take 20 to 30 minutes to destroy the Corona Virons not seconds as the makers seem to indicate. Higher temperature and the right humidity also breaks the Corona Virons apart. The outside humidity in Thailand is an average of 80% and temperature 35C during the day. However, the lower temperatures and controlled humidity inside shopping malls, hotels and large offices with centralised air conditioning systems, can lead to high rates of transmission. One major reasons that they have shut down the shopping malls.

  5. Yes the good ones work, the bad ones are only accurate to plus or minus 0.3C so those are no good. I check every time with my own thermometer. However, a high temperature is not 37.2C. The body temperature ranges between 36.5 to 37.5C with 37.8C being the alarm level because 38C indicates a fever. Most of the hand held infrared thermometers read perfectly it seems, even when coming out of the heat and sunshine.

Must it be hand drawn now? I always use a print out of my condo's website directions.

It depends on the Immigration officer. Sometimes they accept a google map or similar photocopy of a local map, sometimes they do not ask and sometimes they reject your excellent printed map and insist you scrawl it on a piece of paper.

  7. None of these masks can protect you from a Corona Virus which is only 0.12Micron wide. Medical, Surgical and N95 masks are intended for bacteria and particles of 0.3Micron and above. A cloth mask cannot even protect you much from PM2.5 air pollution. The water in droplets evaporates and particles such as viruses under 0.3micron can pass through. Tests show that a sneeze can propel particles with bacteria and virions up to 8.2Metres without a wind and more with a following wind. However, people feel more protected if everyone wears a mask at the moment. Out doors the weather is generally 30C and above with 80% humidity so that the virus will only survive a few hours outside of a host, quite different to Europe and North America where in New York the temperature is 10C to 19C. Under those conditions the virus can survive for up to 28 days The main problem here is in shopping malls, offices, boxing stadiums and large entertainment buildings, with centralised airconditioning systems that drop the temperature and circulate the air. Under those conditions it can survive outside a host for up to a week. It was the right decision to shut down the shopping malls therefore. If you want to make a mask that works for COVID-19, search for 0.1Micron precision textiles like we use in filtration systems.

It would be prudent to carry your passport at all times even if you have a Thai driving licence.

It is prudent never to carry your passport at all times, especially during the Songkran water festival, the high humidity, near pick pockets and you may drop it by mistake. I have been here since 1982, never had a problem. I just carry a photo copy and I have a Thai Drivers licence. The police never ask to see my passport, when I talk with them. I carry the passport when I fly domestically as it is now a requrement and also you are supposed to show your passport if you withdraw or change money at a bank or currency exchange. BTS and BEM require to see your driving licence or passport to top up travel cards. My bank accepts a photocopy because they have known me for 30 years at my branch. The authorities do not require you to carry your passport at all times, just I.D. although you can be required to bring your passport to a police station within a day or two, as per their request, if necessary. That is about except to say that so many people have complained on this forum about lost passports, passports washed in the washing machine by mistake (because they carry their passports with them most of the time and forget to remove them) and also about passports stolen by pickpockets.

Isn’t the problem though that Songkran is nearly here?! People will want to mass together and get close to each other and get drunk and drive their motorbikes and cars. This year not only lots of RTAs with deaths and injuries and visits to hospital, but all the congregating in large numbers will be an opportunity for the virus to spread itself around.

The question is if there is lockdown over Songkran, how quickly will it be lifted afterwards, bearing in mind the low infection rates and death numbers. 3 deaths from coronavirus, whereas the daily rate for deaths on the road is about 47, yet the government does little to force people to drive more carefully and responsibly.

Songkran was postponed indefinitely,  to stop the mass exodus over Songkran, so that will not happen.

  10. A friend went to the Main Immigration Office today at Chaeng Wattana to extend his Non-immigrant B Visa.

Now admittedly, he had help from my lawyer and her very efficient man on site.

Instructing me to be there by 07.00, I left home at 05.25, planning to take the BTS and a taxi from Mo Chit.

However, as soon as he left his condo on Sukhumvit Road, a taxi pulled up and was more than happy to go there and insisted we didn’t need to take the highway.

An extremely pleasant drive, by a great driver, through empty streets, I was at Immigration by 05.50.

The doors opened at 06.00 and he made his way in.

While the line was long, due mainly to social spacing, it moved quickly and at 06.15, following a quick temperature scan (result was shared with me) I was in with my number waiting for the line-up to start at 07.00.

Downstairs for a coffee and a bite to eat, I was back upstairs at 06.50 to meet my lawyer’s agent.

Meanwhile, the Thai Immigration staff were dealing quickly, efficiently and with great finesse and politeness in dealing with all of us.

Those who had to go to Muang Than Thani, Tourist Visa Extensions, were directed to the taxis and aided in giving instructions to the driver if needed.

The line-up started about 07.00 and was announced by a Thai Immigration Officer in almost perfect English, both politely and professionally.

Meanwhile, other Immigration Officials were wandering around ensuring everyone was ready, understood the system and had the correct forms ready.

At 07.30, they started to let us in and with number 163, he was in and sitting down waiting for his case number to be called by 07.40.

Everything for Social Spacing was clearly marked, e.g. lines showing the distance to stand behind each other in line, four out of five seats clearly marked with an ‘X’, and even when dealing with the Immigration Officers at their desks, distance was clearly marked.

My documentation having been checked the day before, the benefit of using a good lawyer, when I was called in at 8.10, everything went quickly and very professionally.

I was finished by 08.30, in a taxi at 08.40, on the BTS at 09.00 and home after a bit of shopping by 10.15.

It was perhaps the best experience I have ever had at Immigration in my 20 years here in Thailand.

The Immigration Office was ready for large numbers, from my point of view, did an amazing job of looking after all of us and were carrying out their duties with a remarkable level of professionalism.

He realizes his story might be unique, he was out there for a relatively easy Non-Immigrant B Extension, had all his documentation prior approved and had the support of a great on-site agent, but all I can say to all the Immigration Officers working out there under such demanding conditions, thank-you for making the entire experience so easy, even pleasant, and for dealing with all of us, from around the world, with so much dignity and respect.

  11. N95 0.3 Micron masks do not stop the corona virus which has a width of only 0.12 to 0.14 micron. In any case, an N95 mask stops 95% of particles above 0.3 Micron, but 5% of 0.3 micron particles, and a larger percentage of smaller particles, get through and obviously build up inside the mask. For these reasons the experts say do not wear masks unless you have a cough, cold and/or are sneezing. Sneezes travel at 180Km/hr or 3metres per second and with a following breeze or in malls and offices with ventllation systems can travel a lot further (up to 200 times in some experiments). This makes social distancing of only 2 metres quite suspect. I have taken to wearing a mask purely because the Government has requested it and because we still have a risk of high air pollution. Soe people say that the viruses are contained in larger droplets preventing them passing the mask. This is untrue since the water evaporates and the particles with in, including viruses can then pass through the pores of the mask.

That's if you can find one....9 out of 10 pharmacies have none in stock

There are plenty in Bangkok, more than before COV-19 from B10 upwards and some at B20 to B40. In Tesco Pharmacy in Seacon Square a reusable mask is B99 in a posh packet.
