  1. Qubes OS 3.1 is a large system (according to distrowatch.com, the .iso file is 4.754Gb! - Win10 is <4Gb). Installation might be tricky (I haven't tried it).

Why not look at distrowatch.com, see what types of linux are popular - these usually have the larger online forums to assist you with installation.

If your concern is about private browsing, Tails OS is tailored for that purpose (I don't use it)

Otherwise, the more popular distros usually have extensive repositiories from where you can download extra media players etc. AA

  2. It appears that you can enjoy all the benefits of supplementary B12 by ingesting small amounts of cobalt, such as (in the form of) cobalt nitrate.

Australian racehorse trainers have recently been prosecuted for this practice (not on animal welfare grounds).

Pernicious anaemia is... pernicious. As a former vet/doctor-dog, I heartily endorse investigating your B12 level and supplementing if appropriate. AA

  3. This has potential serious implications for human health, as bats are the natural hosts of a number of rabies-like diseases. When the bats are environmentally-stressed, they can poop out vast numbers of viral particles, which have caused human fatalities in Malaysia (among pigs and pig-farm staff) and Australia (two distinct diseases, also fatal for horses) in the past 20 years.

I hope the people cleaning up the carcasses were provided with some sort of protective apparel, and the appropriate veterinary authorities were conacted... AA

  4. I took over the lease of a guest house last year. Fairly straight-forward, just meet the owner, decide how many years you want to lease for, try to only pay a month in advance (no deposit) in case things go pear-shape. Can leave monthly wifi/elec/water bills in owner's name, just pay them yourself.

In my case, lease was for two years, owner wanted one month bond (forget getting that returned - standard practice here is you get a 'free' month at the end of contract). The GF and my own name were on the contract. The contract was the standard rental contract (costs 5 baht in a newsagent, maybe some TVer can post a link to download the .pdf [which is A4])

We did a few improvements without consulting the owner - painting, repairing electrics, rerouting plumbing, fixing doors etc - that is at your own expense. I would have requested owner's permission to undertake major structural changes eg. knocking out a wall.

'In case it goes pear-shape'? My GF shot through soon after I gave her 43kB to buy a new motorbike for the business, with the week's takings... what a silly old fawker I am. AA

  5. Lice/mites that drop off birds, dogs or cats that sometimes frequent the places you visit, including public transport.

You have a low-grade allergic reaction, exacerbated by hot climate,

applying some cream with cortisone (eg. Myda-B, 40-60 baht for 15g tube available at pharmacy)

and/or aloe vera (gel from the cut leaf, look for it in pot plants on the street) will help.

If these measure don't help at all after two weeks (they will not be 100% effective), consult a medico. AA

  6. IMHO, computers bought with windoze pre-installed are a disaster, with clutter such as 30-day anti-vrius trial systems

    and the latest/grooviest power-hogging manufacturer's tweak tool,

'Coz your friend bought from the afore-mentioned multinational, usually IT stuff can be returned within a week for full refund.

I your friend really needs windozer and doesn't want to pay 500B,

tell us TVers where your friend is at,

and one of us kind folk in the vicinity can possibly install a clean copy of the dozer,

in return for sufficient bottles of brain nourishment to last the session. AA

  7. I just dealt with this issue for a fellow australyian. Required a call to the embassy 02-3446300, then follow press-buttons to get a real person.

The embassy is no longer (as of last year) issuing the letter to which UJoe refers to in the above post.

The embassy informed Thai Immigration of this, but that message did not trickle-down to DanSingKon Immigration.

The embassy official to whom I spoke said to call the embassy, if you have a prob. doing the transfer,

while you are in the Immi office - the official can explain (in Thai) the revised procedure.

    Hope this helps, cheers AA
