  1. When I was last in Thailand I got hit on by Western men and Thai men. I have to say it was all very flattering. I have found Thai men to be much more reserved and shy but there are some who are used to lots of farang women now so they appear to have more confidence.

I think it is a flying generalisation to say that all Farang men in Thailand are only after the Thai ladies, even though it is very common.

Who knows, I might find the man of my dreams in Thailand whether he be Farang or Thai! rolleyes.gif

  2. I'm going to be moving to Bangkok in November and I have been asked if I would like to live with a friend in Ban Yai which is situated in the suburbs of Bangkok. Only problem is, I only ever went there in the past via a taxi which cost about 450THB

Does anyone know if there are any transport links to Bang Yai which would bring me back into the centre of Bangkok as that's where I'll be working. If not, I may have to consider getting my own apartment closer to the work place.

Does anyone on this forum live in Bang Yai? :)

  3. I think that most female solo artist would strive to have that public shock effect that Madonna had in her younger days so there is a possibility that Lady Gaga is trying to be a modern version of this kind of role model. Why on earth would they not want that much publicity. Madonna is very a famous female solo artist and will be known for years after her death. I'm sure many female solo artists of today want that too?

You have to also remember that all artists of today are influenced one way or another by artists in the past and Madonna could very well have been a big influence on Lady Gaga.

I don't think that Lady Gaga is trying to hard really however she is definitely striving for the public shock factor and wants to be well known with a lot of publicity. I don't think she is copying Madonna per se... It's harder to shock society these days so you always have to go that extra mile which is what I think Lady Gaga is doing.

Either way, I think both Madonna and Lady Gaga are awesome for different reasons. :)

    Very very good post.

    Thank you. :)

Is it just me or did none of that rich-text editor work? :(

  7. Oh dear...

I think 21 is too young to be getting married for any western individual no matter where they are in the world!

As for the lady in question's background... Well I think enough people have given their 2 cents to suggest what usually happens in this kind of situation, however this lady could be different. I'm not going to be the one to judge...But yes, just be careful and make sure it's definitely something you want to do. 300,000THB sounds like an awful lot of money. :ermm:

  8. You have not indicated where you will stay during this time but it would be a good idea to make contact with a specialist physician as soon as possible after arriving; you may need to see a few or at least visit hospital facilities to find a setup that you feel comfortable with. Obviously you would be confined to the major private facilities for this problem. You don't need to register as you would in the UK but, once you have settled at your residence here in Thailand, do a bit of research and check out the hopital's websites or perhaps revive this thread at that time for some real-time advice. You will be able to select an appropriate physician off a hospital's website and make an appointment direct. As a new patient, you will be required to register as a patient. Have copies of all your medical records with you for that appointment.

Thanks for the advice. I will be living in Bangkok so I know there are plenty of decent hospitals around there that I can choose from. I will revive this thread once I get there in November. :)

  9. I say that if you go to Thailand you'll probably have the time of your life. Just be aware and use your common sense like most other people are advising.

I have never heard of anyone getting drugged whilst in Thailand however there is a possibility of it happening anywhere in the world.

I would say, don't get so blindingly drunk that you wake up the next morning with no memory of the night before, no wallet and less dignity. It does unfortunately happen and criminals will take advantage of this. However if you're wise and keep your head on your shoulders you'll be fine. :)

  10. I would suggest that you reconsider coming for an extended period. With your problem you are likely to need very expensive treatment and have risks of infections. Hard to say what is outrageously expensive but you may take UK private prices and discount them about 25% at a private hospital....drugs are not subsidised either. If you are here fopr more than a few months you may also lose access to the NHS when you return for a period.

If you are only coming for a holiday get your doctor to provide you with a few months of drugs to bring with you and you should be allright. Living here is a diferent story.

THe tests are relatively cheap here but I strongly advise you check out the NHS problem.

I've already checked it out and I will be fine for a year. I am planning on living in Thailand for a year and then I will be visiting the UK to see family during that time. During my UK visits I will be arranging to also see my Kidney Specialist. So I should be fine according to my kidney specialist.

Considering I've had this illness all my life I'm pretty good at controlling it. I very rarely these days get hospitalized. I take antibiotics daily and then when I do get5 an infection, I'm good at treating it myself with my own stand by medication.

My doctor is giving me 6 months supply of medication whilst I'm out there and I know where I can buy medication if needed be.

Thanks for the concern and advice though!

Check with the NHS too...they are the ones who have the say.

I have double checked with the NHS and everything should be fine as long as I attend an appointment within a year. :)

  12. I'm trying to work out the best way to ask for advice on this, however the only way which seems logical is to start from the beginning. So please bear with me.

I am moving to Bangkok in November and I have Stage 4 Chronic Kidney Disease and Kidney Reflux. I have had my right kidney removed and have left one remaining which functions at 21% only. I am pre-dialysis which means I am not on dialysis yet, however if my kidney functions continues to deteriorate then I will be. I am prone to getting urinary tract infections and kidney infections and I take antibiotics every day to steer infections away. Due to my kidney dysfunction I am chronically anaemic therefore I have regular iron infusions and I also take Ferrous Sulphate daily.

In the UK, I get my kidneys checked regularly with a blood test to check on the function and certain levels in my blood... Right now my kidneys are quite stable and I have been given the all clear to go to Thailand by my Renal Specialist under certain conditions.

I have to get a blood test checking my kidney function, iron and haemoglobin levels every 3 months and then fax/email the results over to my Renal Specialist. What is the best way for me to go about this? Do I just walk into a clinic and explain my situation? Or should I register myself with some kind of Renal Specialist or Urologist in Bangkok? If I have to register myself, how do I go about registering?

If the results of my blood tests show I am dangerously low in Iron then I may need an Iron Infusion, so how would I go about getting one of those also?

As for the medication I take every day, I know I can purchase it from most pharmacies and I shouldn't have a problem with that.

I know I will have to pay for each test and infusion and medication etc. However, what prices are we looking at? Will it be ridiculously expensive?

Any help or advice would be greatly appreciated. :)

  13. Unlikely to get insurance of any kind here....they will tend to consider anything is related to your condition. You may have more luck in England as you may get covered with exclusions.

Remember also that if you are out of the UK for a year you may lose your entitlement to Medical services in the UK.

You lose your entitlement to medical services in the UK?! Even if I'm a British Citizen with a British passport? That's ridiculous.

  14. One day you will come across some locals who don't appreciate being shouted at and the outcome could be pretty nasty.

I think you can come across some locals in any country who don't appreciate being shouted at and the outcome could be nasty.

You're going to get tossers in every country and its up to you how you respond to this. I think it's a case of being a judge of character and weighing up the situation you're in. I wouldn't lose my temper with someone who I thought was a threat and where by I thought things could get nasty. That just wouldn't be common sense. However if I feel the need to stand my ground and stand up for myself rather than take it just because I'm a foreigner given that I've judge the person's character and I don't think they're going to turn nasty then yes... I would stand my ground.

Same goes in any country, not just Thailand.

  15. I am moving to Thailand in November and I need to have health insurance.

I have Stage 4 renal failure and chronic kidney disease. This means I am not on dialysis yet, my one remaining kidney functions at 22% currently and I won't need dialysis until I get to 10% or lower. I am prone to getting kidney infections which sometimes require intravenous antibiotics and hospital treatment. However the frequency of these infections can fluctuate. (I'm currently doing well and haven't had one in months! Yay!)

Getting a years cover of insurance from the UK for Thailand will cost me about £3,000 (147,000 THB approx.) which is pretty steep if you ask me. I could purchase it and not get ill at all! Also, I can treat most kidney infections myself as I'm used to it and I know which antibiotics my body is most likely to respond to and you can purchase these for very cheap in Pharmacies.

I have also considered just getting standard insurance and not mentioning my pre-existing condition which would be about £140 (7,000 THB approx.) and then having some back up funds in case I get ill and enough money for a flight back to the UK if really needs be.

Are there any insurance companies in Thailand which will cover my pre-existing condition and suitable for foreigners living in Thailand? What are your experiences and recommendations? What would you do in my situation?

  16. I had an identical looking thing on my arm when I was last in Thailand, the locals told me it was a millipede trail as they have poisonous legs. I just used some aloe vera extract on the trail and it cleared up after a while. :)

  17. I think I have only ever lost my temper with a local once.

I was just leaving some Thai friends in Bangkok and jumping in a taxi and my Thai friend told the driver to put the taxi meter on. I also informed him to do this. However he sped off and didn't put the taxi meter on. I didn't notice for about 5 minutes, but when I did I sternly said "I said put the taxi meter on!" He just laughed at me and muttered something in Thai under his breath and then started speeding up down the road. As soon as this started happening I felt really uneasy and quite frightened so I raised my voice at him. More than anything I raised my voice out of fear rather than anger and he just laughed at me and then when I finally got to my destination, the driver was demanding I pay him double than what I normally pay. I refused and got angry with him. In turn, he got very irate and grabbed me by the neck. I know there is a theory that Thais don't like losing face and I was aware that I potentially putting myself in more danger. However the destination I was at was a Thai friend's house and he came out and had a go at the taxi driver in Thai. The whole thing left me really shaken up and I hated being left in the house alone, I had this fear that the taxi driver would come back as he knew my address. I thought he would come back and 'get me back' kind of thing.

  18. Hi people!

I'm Cassie from the UK and I will be moving to Bangkok, Thailand in November. I've already bought my one way ticket there and I'm definitely looking forward to it. Was advised to join this forum in case I needed any help and advice with the big move. Also I figured that once I've done the move myself I can offer help and information to those who are thinking of doing the same.

    Lovely to meet you all!
