  1. Lack of intiative is certainly a big thing. I'll never for get the lack of intiative that one continually comes across in places like Tescos and Carrefour. Alot of mindless indviduals standing around, and rarely able or willing to help anyone.

    Unwilling to help?

That is one thing I have never found in Thailand.

  2. Anyway, he was very excited to take my photo and his idea back to boss, where I'm sure his boss now thinks that this guy really has acquired great analytical common sense...

I hope he has, too  :o

    Ajarn,

His Boss probably sacked him for failing to sell you that bigger pump! :D

  3. I use an ACER travelmate 230, had it for 15 months, no problems at all, very heavy use, only problem is 20GB hard drive is not enough.

I am working in Japan, have 100Mbps ADSL so I bought an iPod, 2500 songs downloaded from Kazaa and with other software i have run out of space on the disc.

It was 38000 baht, celeron 2.0GHz, 256 Ram. No video out though.

Would i get another ACER product ? Yes I think so.

  4. It is indeed very serious:

There are around 4000 recorded suicides per year in the UK, but it is estimated that it is under-reported by 30 to 50 per cent.

It is among the 10 commonest causes of death, and the fourth commonest for young adults.

Since the 1960s the rates have been increasing.

These figures are from a country with Social services and organisations that will listen and help. The Samaritans do a fantastic job, they will get over half a Million calls over the Christmas period.

Many of the farangs that suicide in Thailand maybe would not have done this in UK, but who knows?

So many do even with the support that is available in the UK.

It is no surprise that they do it here where there would be little support.

  5. Suicides in the UK and Ireland :

    Almost 6,700 committed suicide

There was one suicide every 79 minutes

77% of suicides are by males

868 suicides by young people - more than two per day.

    1998 figures, Samaritans

These are figures from the UK, where there are organisations like the Samaritans that actually talk hundreds of people out of Suicide per month.

In the UK there are all kind of support groups, and with Social Security you are not going to go hungry.

Many people come to Thailand and fall in love with the place, it is so different to what they are used to back home. It all seems so attractive, so tempting. So tempting in fact that many sell everything they have, leave wives and family, Jobs and careers to satisfy that temptation.

They arrive in Thailand to start their new life, maybe they have 2 - 3 Million Baht and they feel rich, they freely spend the money like they did when they was on holiday. Of course, they have to stay in an expensive apartment, after all, they are rich!

    Fast Forward 2 years ....

Money Gone, family disowned them, they are scared to go back home to face the Credit card debts and the Bank loans that they got before they left their home country, they feel cheated, they drink to drown their sorrow, they then hate Thailand, they blame Thailand for their downfall, they become very cynical, they slam Farangs that send money to Thai girls ( secretly wishing that someone would send them money ), they become solitary creatures with few if any friends, overstay then hits the passport, they have no money to get to a border...rent is due........Cannot borrow any more....other people avoid them.....Hate Thailand , Hate Thailand, Hate Thailand!!!

    The dream is over.

Another Suicide in Thailand is recorded.

And this high season, future statistics will be arriving in Bangkok daily.

Don't be so surprised at the Suicide rate amongst farang in Thailand, I for one am surprised it is not many times higher. :o

  6. How can I get out of teaching in Thailand into a real position which is going to offer me a career choice.

Im 25 with an Environmental Protection Degree, I have an EARA Environmental Auditors Certificate and have worked for P&G in their R&D section.

But I'm stuck teaching Science to kids that don't want to learn. I have a wife here and a life that I don't want to leave.

    Anybody have any ideas? :o

No im not a troll either.

Suck it up, go home with your wife while you are still young, take 1 or 2 holidays to LOS per year, work away at your chosen career path getting experience and valuable skills, acquire more money/assets, get your thai wife your home country citizenship/passport...THEN permanently come back to Thailand in your early thirtys ...loaded with more options for you and family.

    Good advice from Penelope,

You are smart enough to realise that teaching in Thailand will not offer you much in the way of security. If you where a Single guy wanting a few years working overseas it is different, but if you are married..........................

Go back home, get a job that pays a good salary.

    Penelope said it all .

You will regret staying here in a job with no prospects, and you will also struggle to live on the teachers salary.

Get out now, while you can, you are young and still employable in your own country.

Take a look around at some of the Teachers that have been in Bangkok for years.

Fancy ending up like them, struggling to make the rental payment on a one room apartment in a not very nice apartment block?

    Sounds harsh? Sometimes reality is.

  7. This will again affect tourism.

The FCO travel Advice to Thailand has been updated.

    http://www.fco.gov.uk/servlet/Front?pagena...d=1013618386505

Criminy.... after reading all the FCO warnings there, I can't imagine ANYONE wanting to come to tour Thailand.

    Have to agree with that.

I just read it myself, if I was just thinking about a holiday destination and I read that report, I would certainly stay away.

Will tourist numbers be down this High Season ?
