  1. After living in Thailand for more than 5 years, it is now time for me to go back home and rebuilding my life.

If anyone have a dream about moving to Thailand at a young age, i will now share my experiences, hoping that others can avoid doing my mistakes.

I came to Thailand, haven't even passed 25 years of age, following a dream of a better life. After i had lost more or less all my family back home i went to see the only family i had left, my father who had been living in Thailand for several years at the time.

Stupid as i was, i started up a bar, hoping it would provide some income for me to stay here.

Had countless fo people told me this was a stupid thing, and that i wouldn't even last 6 months here in Thailand. Stubborn as i always had been, i though i had to make my own experience about this. True as said, the bar didn't last a full year, and i had to find some other way of income, and at that time i did manage to do so.

Never been very demanding about having a rich life, and i'm happy living a simple life "as the locals"

Allthough i have made it for 5 years here now, with various internet-jobs, i now have to give up and pack my bag. It have had it's ups and downs, but i do have to say, in the end, i do not regret coming here. I have learned a lot about a beautiful country with a lot of amazing people, but most importantly i have learned a lot about myself.

Always tried to take care of myself, but i always hoped to have some failsafe-security about my father living here. But as he had a tough time with the bottle, he ran off to Cambodia a year ago, and now im left alone here. My job is more or less stranded now in the summer-holidays, but i scraped up enough for a ticket back home, departure in a few months time. The best i could do.

So for anyone want to seek out the good life in Thailand without any pension or anything, i would say go for it, but DO have a backup-plan, lot of (can never be enough) backup money and not just hope for the best as i did.

My dream is of course be to come back one day, but better prepared, and this time i would know what i'm getting in to. I will not come back until all this is taken care of, so it might be a long time... But my dream will keep me going... and the hope that i can take care of my son that i had here in Thailand. As of now, i can not, and that is probably my biggest regret.

So all in all, Thailand is a amazing place to stay, but watch your step. There are all kinds of trouple waiting out there, which could be more costly than you would like. Take advice from more experienced people, but don't listen to everything, as there are many "experts" who think they know more than they actually do.

If all you have to say is "i told you so", or "my own fault" or stuff like that, i already know, so please keep it for your self. I know i took a big and stupid risk,

it made me happy for a long time, but the adventure is now ending. If i had a chance to go back and choose again, i would make more or less the same choice.

    I'll be back!

Well I admire your honesty ..... Good luck to you and if you come back please post ....

  2. I'll try to be very specific to avoid a repeat of the endless discussion in other threads.

I agree that 200K+ a month is a minimum if you are an international executive living and working in Bangkok. And if you have kids negotiate that their education is taken care of by your company. But here we are talking about retirement in Isan.

Our houses, both in Isan and Bangkok are fully paid. We plan to live in Isan but expect to spend every other week end in Bangkok for a bit of shopping and a good meal. And make an oversea trip at least one or two time a year. Based on that, we estimate that 60K per month is reasonable for a couple.

We will have no pension, just a lump sum to retire. We expect to live 40 years after retirement but plan for 10 extra years. Based on our estimation we should retire with around 50M Bahts (excluding the houses). What do you guys think ? Is it too little or too much ? And how to invest this sum to maximize the return with very little tolerance for risk ?

Additional question : what kind of insurance you will recommend ?

    Happy days ,,,,,enjoy ,,,,,,

  4. I have a big headache that my maid has been with us for 6 months, she said to me yesterday that she had something urgent to deal with in her own country, need to go back for 2 months and she will come back to work with me again. I asked why it takes so long, she said she wanna spend sometime with her relatives as well coz she hasn't seen them for long. But the point is why 2 months? Why it takes that long for spending time with her friends and relatives? Does she want to quit?

I talked to her last night, I allowed her for holiday and dealing her "urgent" stuff for 1 month only, we will allow her to have her second holiday for another month when we go back to our country for Xmas later this year, and we told her we could pay her transportation fee for that. She hasn't answer me yet. I give her time to consider.( I have a baby of 8 months, my daughter like her very much), but I really don't like the attitude of saying" I wanna to have 2 months holiday", I couldn't even said to my boss I wanna holiday for that long suddenly. What is her problem? We treat very very good.

Can anyone tell me hong long your maid works a day? Live in or live out? How much you are paying? English speaking?

She's leaving mate just givin enough space/time just in case it goes tits up ....IMHO.....

  5. I have done but tend to rent from the place I am staying where I figure they have a bunch of my money from the place so perhaps won't pull a 'oh look at this scratch' scam on me. I have to say I have never, ever had an issue with that kind of thing renting a bike in Thailand but a lot of people are adament about leaving the passport.

In my experience if you don't then they are more than happy for you to walk away and not rent the bike so what can you do?

Never ever give your passport to these maggots

  6. Easy solution is cheap mass transit the Tuk Tuks will disappear and people can hop on and off buses /light trains so to eradicate the opportunist watching and waiting for people having to walk due to the over priced short rides of the present day available transport ,as for the police well kick the lot out start again...

  7. I would be inclined to agree with u on that point but this isn't the thread topic we are talking about and they are in the service industry so like it or lump it and they should deliver the expected service IMO...

But "expected" is the key word, you have to pay a premium if you want staff that have been well-trained by management that have in turn been well-trained. So if you're at the Oriental sure, and you're likely to get it.

But from an ordinary place with ordinary management, here in Thailand you shouldn't expect a lot.

Then when you do get good service, simply because that particular member of staff is in a good mood or a particularly energetic and cheerful person, you can be pleasantly surprised.

Just make sure to patronize and reward it where you see it and you're doing your part to help that paradigm evolve here.

B&Ming when you don't get it is certainly not going to have the same result.

    Have to agree u ....
